Michelle Obama believes her fashion choices are “very practical”

Michelle Obama believes her fashion choices are “very practical”.

The US first lady – who posed for the cover of US Vogue when her husband Barack became President – admits she always has to “love” what she wears, but must consider the physical implications of whatever outfit she is wearing.

She said: “I have to wear what I love. I have to feel good in it. My day-to-day wardrobe choices are very practical. I’m like, ‘What’s the temperature? Am I going to be sitting in the grass? Will I be playing with kids? Can I sit on the floor?’ ”

The 47-year-old philanthropist also reveals she likes to think little about her clothes once she has them on.

She said: “If I’m comfortable in what I have on, that’s second nature, and then all my attention can go on the people in the room that I’m with at the time, and I don’t have to worry whether something is riding up or whether my feet hurt. I don’t want to waste anxiety on something as limited as clothes.”

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen sell $39,000 alligator backpack from their collection and claim they want to dress Michelle Obama

By Andrea Petrou on October 4th, 2011

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s $39,000 alligator backpack was the first item to sell from their new handbag range.

The fashion design duo – who celebrated the luxury collection, which launched under their fashion label The Row, with a cocktail party at Paris store Montaigne Market – were thrilled with the sale of the controversial bag, with Ashley noting that luxury items perform well during uncertain economic times.

She told WWD: “It was the first thing that sold off the shelf. During our last economic crisis in the U.S., the only thing that went up was Hermes.”

Shoe designer Christian Louboutin spoke of his admiration for Mary-Kate and Ashley’s collection and revealed he feels protective of the twins.

He said: “I feel very much like a godfather to them. I adore them both. They are very cute and very clever.”

Averyl Oates, buying director for Harvey Nichols, who stock The Row, recently claimed the success of the label is due to its “timeless generational appeal”.

She explained: “The label carries timeless generational appeal while still remaining directional.

“Mary-Kate and Ashley recently achieved their ambition of dressing Michelle Obama. Lauren Hutton has also worked with the brand and I think the ageless appeal lies with the fact that the collection has a crystal-clear DNA.”

New York Fashion Week: Oscar de la Renta S/S 2012

Oscar de la Renta may be an extremely talented designer and one of Hollywood’s most sought-after names when it comes to red carpet gowns, but I actually have a bit of a bone to pick with his new collection. I’ll get on to that in a minute..

It was an absolutely giant body of work with over 60 pieces making up the collection, spanning over a whole rainbow palette of colours that I have to admit do make me very happy. We all know that Oscar de la Renta’s speciality is lavish, gorgeous gowns, and he definitely didn’t skimp on those with giant couture-style puffball skirts playing against delicate lace sleeves and huge origami-structured dresses with florals and interesting folds.

He also did a fine line in his other trademark: the day dresses that are so favoured by the ladies who lunch, such as Michelle Obama, and they were very cute and girlish as normal with romantic 1950s-style skirts and nipped-in waists for a dreamy, summertime feel.

So, this is the bone I have to pick with his collection – there was just too much of it. For me, with so large a collection was just too sprawling and included too many different elements into the collection, which spanned from 60s coat dresses to folk dresses to mad, puffy medieval gowns and beyond – the whole thing just didn’t mesh. Each piece is beautifully designed and created, but has nothing to do with either piece beside it.

So, Oscar, that’s my nitpicking over. Check out the gallery to see some of the highlights from the designer’s giant Spring/Summer 2012 collection.

Patricia Field wants to style Michelle Obama

By emilyborrett on August 18th, 2011

Patricia wants to get her fashion claws into Michelle Obama (left)

Patricia Field, one of the most famous stylists in the world thanks to the magic she weaved over Carrie’s wardrobe in Sex and the City, has admitted that she’s dying to style Michelle Obama.

We think Michelle is the most stylish First Lady since Jackie O, and it seems that Patricia feels the same way. The iconic stylist said: “”Probably at this point I would like to dress Michelle Obama. I think because she’s tall, she’s a classy woman, and I think she dresses fine. But I would still love to get my hands on her. I love the way she presents herself and part of the way she presents herself that I really like a lot is that it’s natural and easy and she’s not trying. I think when she gets dressed up – she could get a little adjustment there. Because she’s so elegant in a way she could be a little more directed in her formal wear – but everyday stuff she’s got it down.”

Watch out Obama, if your wife goes off for a styling session with Patricia Field she might come back covered in animal prints and giant corsages. We’ll love it if that happens, but I’m not so sure if you will. Just be warned..

Michelle Obama wears Asos Africa during her South Africa tour

By Andrea Petrou on June 23rd, 2011

If you’ve got a fashion crush on Michelle Obama but think you’ll never be able to afford her style, then we’ve got some great news for you.

As we reported yesterday the First Lady visited South Africa for a meeting with Nelson Mandela bringing with her an impressive wardrobe consisting of her staple long coat and waisted belts.

However, she also had a little high street lovely snuggled in her closet and that came in the shape of this printed sleeveless oversized shirt from the Asos Africa collection, which she wore to play with South Africa’s children.
And the best news is that it’s only £35 meaning you don’t need a Presidential salary to afford it. We advise you get it now before the buying frenzy begins.

Michelle Obama stole the fashion show yesterday when she stepped out to meet Nelson Mandela in South Africa.

The First Lady went firstly for a taffeta peach frock and matching cropped jacket for meeting Mr Madela’s wife, before changing in casual attire of jeans and a waistcoat accessorised with a scarf to play with local children.
Over in the US  Liv Tyler stepped out in a slinky blue frock for the Ledge Premier. She was joined by Olivia Palermo who looked stunning in what looks to be a yellow Victoria Beckham designed frock.

Kristen Stewart however decided to play it casual in cropped jeans and a black tee at the premier of A Better Life.

By Andrea Petrou on May 25th, 2011

Kate Middleton has shown once again she’s a girl after our own hearts choosing a fitted taupe dress from Reiss to meet Michelle and Barack Obama.

The Duchess of Cambridge, who is a fan of the upper end highstreet brand, met America’s First Couple, who visited Buckingham Palace yesterday and also met with the Queen, Prince Philip, Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall.

The day marked the first official engagement for the pair as a married couple, and also the first time they’ve been spotted since returning from their Seychelles honeymoon.

Peter Sornen always makes sure the dresses he designs for Michelle Obama can be “altered”.

By Andrea Petrou on April 14th, 2011

Peter Sornen always makes sure the dresses he designs for Michelle Obama can be “altered”.

The designer – who has created outfits for the fashionable First Lady on six separate occasions – is often given simple direction when he is asked to work on pieces for her, and always likes to have the option to change it at any moment.

He said: “I get an idea of colour, I get an idea of a size, and I make sure that it can be altered

“I have a more secure feeling knowing that it can be either let out or taken in. I have to have an idea of what she’s feeling on wearing – if it’s going to be an easy skirt, and not a fitted skirt.

“I’ll send a swatch sometimes. Other times I was just given a direction, like, ‘I want a true red,’ or, ‘It’s got to be the most beautiful blue.’ But they trusted me in a lot of things, which was great.”

However, Peter always keeps quiet about his collaborations with the White House, not even telling his sales manager Ellen Carey.

He told New York Magazine: “I don’t even tell Ellen until like, the day of, and I work with Ellen very closely. I’m very tight-lipped about it. I don’t tell anyone.”
