From our British bloggers at Catwalk Queen

From London we head to Italy, where Roberto Cavalli opened Milan Fashion Week with his Just Cavalli spring/summer 2009 collection. Against a seascape backdrop, it was another unusual mix of leopard print, lace, leather and chiffon for the designer, but haven’t we seen this all before?

Milan Fashion Week: Calvin Klein Collection, Dolce & Gabbana, and Fendi

By Andrea Thatcher on February 22nd, 2008

In one writer’s humble opinion, Milan Fashion Week started off strong and then kind of petered out. While I love all three of these designers, who showed Thursday and Friday this week closing out the Milan shows, none of these collections really struck me as much as say, D&G or the controversial Prada show.

Milan Fashion Week: More color mixes with neutrals at Marni

By Andrea Thatcher on February 21st, 2008

Marni%20collage.jpg

While the colors and architectural interpretation of shape we’ve seen at New York and London were evident at Marni’s Milan runway show yesterday, the designer definitely broke free of the pack. The shapes fell somewhere in between the relaxed and the volumunious structures presented on catwalks across the continents, and the shapes too seemed somehow subdued even in their brightest incarnations. While not as harsh or futuristic as the phrase usually implies, the collection was one of the more avant garde that we’ve seen.

For a rundown on Gucci, Roberto Cavalli, and Emilio Pucci, head over to Catwalk Queen.

Milan Fashion Week: D&G pipes up for plaid

By Andrea Thatcher on February 19th, 2008

If you haven’t picked up on it yet, plaid is going to be big for fall. Preppy plaid, plaid tartan, 90′s grunge plaid, it has all had its place on the runway. And it all had its place on one single runway in the D&G show yesterday, with about 90% of the pieces shown featuring some sort of loud plaid print.

Dolce & Gabanna took a very English countryside aesthetic and made it a bit more flowy and feminine and, well, Italian. This would be a great collection to choose a few pieces from to update your fall wardrobe with the checked trend, even if we wouldn’t suggest the head-to-toe looks on the catwalk.

Milan Fashion Week: The Italian shows kicked off over the weekend

By Andrea Thatcher on February 18th, 2008

Milan designers showed diverse looks from casual to formal over the weekend as Milan Fashion Week kicked off, as you can see above. Roberto Cavalli stuck with what worked for his Cavalli collection for his younger Just Cavalli line as well – his classic 70′s vibe. It’s always interesting to see European designers borrowing heavily from American themes, such as this hippie-chic look and Chanel’s stars and stripes, since so often European design is considered somehow artistically more sophisticated than what comes out of the states.

‘No Anorexia’ ad campaign puts the spotlight on eating disorders

By Andrea Thatcher on October 8th, 2007

art.anorexic.ap.jpg
With Fashion Week seasons coming to a close in Europe, one Italian fashion label is stirring up controversy over a billboard that features an anorexic model in order to ‘raise awareness.’ The ad seen here launched late September to coincide with Fashion Week in Milan, and provides a glimpse of extreme thinness in this competitive industry. While some feel that the ad itself could be a ‘trigger’ for the anorexic community, others feel it carries a worthy message for those who continue to support skinny models on the runway.

Milan Fashion Week: Prada fairytales

By Andrea Thatcher on September 26th, 2007

Prada_Milan%20Fashion%20Week.JPG

Prada went for a ‘dark fairytale’ spring theme in Milan Fashion Week, today. Her collection began with a navy blue long cardigan, skirt and knee high socks, then quickly morphed into fairyland. Complete with flowing chiffon dresses and pants sets with black contrast piping and what looked like Japanese anime fairy print, the collection was reminiscent of the late ’60s and early ’70s Art Nouveau style. The fairy designs were paired with contrasting colorful plaid stockings and dark black eye makeup. Check out more pictures from the show after the jump.
