Whether you watched the VMAs on Saturday night or not, it’s always fun to have a peep at what the stars wore to one of the USA’s biggest A-list events.
Katy Perry, who came away smiling like the cat got the cream with three awards, went through more than one outfit change but our absolute favourite quirky Katy look for the night has to be the girlish Eastern-style powder blue chinoise dress, which looked cute and cartoonish with her pink hair and a matching pastel-coloured parasol.
As we all now know, Beyonce glowed with new-baby happiness all the way down the red carpet in a sizzling one-shouldered, draped orange maxi with her hair swept to one side, vintage-style. We loved her chandelier earrings too – pure 70s Halston glamour. Meanwhile, our favourite home-grown talent Adele also rocked a look from a different decade as she went for a clinging black midi-dress with huge 60s hair and makeup. Perfect.
Katie Holmes sassed it out on the red carpet with expertly teased waves and a black lace skater dress and tan suede wedge boots, while poor old Jessie J still looked sexy and upbeat despite her crutches in a jewelled black corset-body and a pair of white jewelled Bebaroque tights.

Lady Gaga is known for her love for eccentric outfits and theatrical performances – who else has showed up at an awards ceremony dressed in meat and arrived to the Grammy awards in an ‘egg’?
Despite her more unusual sartorial choices, Gaga doesn’t think of herself as crazy and when it comes to family, she believes herself to be very normal.
The ‘Judas’ hitmaker said on MTV show ‘Lady Gaga: Inside the Outside’: “I’m really quite traditional, actually, contrary to what some people might think about me. I’m quite traditional in the family sense.”
Gaga says she was inspired to become a singer by her parents Joseph and Cynthia Germanotta, who encouraged her to pursue her interest in music by buying her records from artists like The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin.
Could Lady Gaga be entering into the world of movies? If rumours are to be believed then the answer is yes.
According to reports in the News of the World the starlet, who broke records with a huge 13 MTV Video Music Award nominations, has set her sights on a Gaga-centric feature film.
A source told the newspaper that the Lady was planning an epic similar to Michael Jackson’s 1988 long-form music movie Moonwalker and the 2006 film adaptation of Dreamgirls, which starred Lady Gaga’s Telephone partner Beyonce. It also seems this video was her inspiration with a source telling the News of The World that she decided on this while on the set of her epic nine-minute video.
And Miss G doesn’t just want any old director. She’s apparently in talks with X-Men and The Usual Suspects director Bryan Singer to ensure the film goes as well as possible.
“GaGa is a real creative genius and is thinking about new possibilities all the time.
“She wants to work with the best people in the business,” a source told the News of the World.
It’s Friday! And not only does that mean the weekend, but also time for our Friday Fashion Fracas. We got a great response from last week’s Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Aniston face off, with the majority of you voting for Jen’s style over Ange’s. But who will win this weeks Lady Gaga vs Madonna funky fashion fracas?
Yes, we know it may seem like an odd choice given Madge’s more sophisticated style nowadays. However she was a style icon in the 80s, and dare we say it, possibly the pioneer of raunch, leotards and leather.
So to get the fight going we’ll start with the 80s pop queen.
As we’ve already said, Madonna’s style now, does nothing to reflect her 80s outfits. Today she’ll be seen out in suits, leather jackets and jeans, which although are all lovely, aren’t very, well, exciting. However rewind 30 years and you’d hardly recognise the leather clad, skimpily dressed pop star.
Madge was one of the first to be risque with her stage and everyday outfits, and was rarely seen with more than a few clothes on. She introduced the Gaultier “conical cone” bra, which has slowly made its way back into our fashion radars as the underwear as outwear trend continues to go strong.
And although leotards are now more associated with Lady Gaga, Madge was wearing these, before the Queen of Quirkiness was even born, teaming them up with fishnets, studs and of course PVC. There have also been times in the past few years where Madge’s daring ulterior ego has come through. She wore a bright green headpiece with batwing skirt for an event in 2007, and her stage outfits are all still about bodysuits and stockings.
Worst outfit.
After a quiet couple of years, a newly-gothic Madonna decided to shock fans and the fashion police when she stepped out in a hideous yellow long satin frock in 1999 to help commemorate MTV‘s Top 100 Music videos.
What other’s say
“Club kid, raunchy sex flirt, geisha, school ma’am – what style hasn’t Madonna done? Always stylish, never boring, and above all, a true fashion feminist: Madonna, we salute you.” Handbag.com
Lady Gaga.
If we’re honest, we’re not actually sure where to begin here. Lady G is the epitome of 2000 outrageous fashion incorporating everything from PVC, leather studs and bralets into her “everyday style.” And she has a huge designer following with everyone from Armani, Viktor & Rolf and of course the late Alexander McQueen, queueing up to dress.
We’ve seen things we could never have even imagined from this singer, including coke cans in her hair for the Telephone video, a telephone on her head for her appearance on Friday Night with Jonathan Ross and lobsters, for, well, just a night out. We could go on all day listing these.
Miss G is also no stranger to leotards, bearing her body on and off stage very successfully. But are her outfits an “updated” wackier version of Madge’s style or is she unique in what she wears?
Worst outfit.
We’re a little bit torn between the white 3 tiered Armani Prive cape the star wore to the Grammies and the hideous gothic PVC frock she donned to perform at the 2009 Royal Variety show and to meet the Queen.
What others say
“We’re ignored this lady for as long as possible, not because she didn’t interest us or anything, but because we weren’t sure what to make of her individual style.
She’s quirky to say the least, after appearing in rubber outfits and origami style dresses quite recently and she also seems to have a fetish for wearing some outrageous false eyelashes too.” Female First.
Our verdict.
Both singers have revolutionised style to a great extent, but we think this Friday’s winner has got to be Madonna. The original style icon paved the way for unique and outrageous outfits venturing into territory others had only dreamed about.

Alexa Chung’s year didn’t end on too much of a high after news that her MTV show had been axed, but it seems the fashionista is bouncing back into the new year.
The starlet has been signed up by denim brand Pepe Jeans to front its 2010 campaign.
Alexa, more known for her quirky sense of style and for opting for dresses instead of trousers, stars alongside Tom Guinness and Boyd Holbrook, where she sports a range of denim and plaid.
However, she still gets her pins out, and reminds us why she’s been so successful with her modelling career, with these little denim cut-offs.
We have a lot of respect for Alexa Chung here at ShinyStyle, so we’re a little bit upset that the kooky fashion starlet has now officially confirmed that her On with Alexa, MTV show is over.
Alexa posted the news via Twitter yesterday, saying: “Today was our last ever show. Thanks so much to everyone who watched, for those of you who didn’t – you missed out. Xx”
There has been quite a bit of speculation as to the circumstances of the cancellation after just two seasons, one was that she had got too skinny during the filming (this was later rubbished by her management company).
However, with her contract with MTV continuing until next year and the channel claiming future plans are being left open, we’re sure we’ll still be seeing a lot more of the presenter in the months to come.
Fans of The City may be surprised to learn that one of the show’s cast is already pulling out. Erin Lucas has confirmed that she will not be returning for the second season.
“I decided to do something different,” she told NY Mag. “I have a project in the mix, but I want to get into more hosting. That’s really what I love. It was just hard. It was a chapter in my life and it was nothing but positive. I’m glad I did it, but on to the next thing”.
She also admitted that she hadn’t spoken to Whitney Port for months.
“We were [close], but things change,” she said. “There was a falling out”.
Oh dear! Erin also said that there were no hard feelings, and if she ever saw Whitney again she would give her a big hug.
At the end of last season, The City also lost Jay after Whitney decided to break up with him to focus on her career and being a single gal about town. At this rate, there won’t be anyone left.
As I mentioned yesterday, rat-face Spencer Pratt has admitted to lying to Lauren Conrad in order to get her to come to his wedding to Heidi Montag. Nevertheless, as we all know L.C. did attend the wedding, filmed (and likely paid for) by MTV for Sunday’s episode of The Hills. Here is a sneak peek of what went on inside the church for the couple’s big day. My favourite part has to be the appalled look on L.C.’s face when her old rival and new replacementKirsten Cavallari unexpectedly shows up. I honestly couldn’t have scripted it better myself. Elle magazine has picked itself up and dusted itself off after Stylista was cancelled on the CW network. Instead, it will feature in MTV’s The City, after the show’s resident ice queen, Olivia Palermo, scored a job in the publicity department of the magazine. Sources say that shooting of season two is already under way, with cameras entering the Elle offices this week. I wonder, will this television venture will be more successful?
The weekend brought with it the return of MTV’s newly-revived House of Style. The TV show, which had many of us glued to our screens in the late ’80s/early ’90s, has now partnered with Teen Vogue to bring us all latest from the world of fashion.
Starring Bar Rafaeli and Chanel Iman as co-hosts, the show’s weekend debut prompted mixed reactions from viewers, who felt it was too scripted and perhaps a little too geared towards the teen-set (erm… friendship bracelets, really?!). Here is a snippet from episode one, featuring Rafaeli interviewing Justin Timberlake on the eve of his New York Fashion Week show for William Rast. Click play on video above to watch.
I’ll admit, the most I remember of House of Style is the parody clip in Reality Bites. It’s a little before my fashion time.
But that’s doesn’t mean I’m not psyched for MTV to bring back this fashion news program. And who do they hope to launch to household status like they did with Cindy Crawford? Well, Chanel Iman is in the mix, as is Leonardo DiCaprio’s girlfriend Bar Refaeli.
Wouldn’t fashion week be a fab time to premiere the show? But knowing MTV they need at least 6 months to air teaser commercials so we’ll probably have to pin our hopes on spring ’10.
Boy oh boy, this was just too good to pass up. So, it looks like the Queen of Slop (Britney) borrowed some inspiration from the Queen of Pop (Madonna) for her performance at the Bambi Awards in Germany. I’m all about Brit making a comeback, don’t get me wrong, but this is a bit silly. The transparent shirt, hot pants, fishnets, hat, boots—it’s fashion robbery!
Heidi Montag popped in to MTV’s TRL today, surely promoting her upcoming fashion line Heidiwood, her current range for Anchor Blue, or most likely both.
And we’ll bet those are one of the pairs of Christian Louboutins she was seen buying with is-he-or-isn’t-he fiance Spencer Pratt in New York this weekend.
If you’ve followed our fashion week coverage, you know we love punk label New York Couture and designer Cassie K. Turns out MTV loves her too, they chose her to be featured on “True Life: I’m Going To Fashion Week”. Keep reading for more info and pics of Cassie’s designs.
Love it or hate it, there’s no denying that MTV’s The Hills influences the fashion of teenage girls across the country. Yes, this is a little bit scary, but so be it. On the red carpet of their show’s live finale last night Lauren Conrad, Whitney Port and Audrina Patridge were actually fairly good fashion role models. Looking like the cute, barely-20-something’s they are, they all chose short, somewhat bare frocks with Whitney probably looking the most fashion-forward in her tights and ankle boots. Maybe it’s just that she’s more New York style while the other girls stick to their Hollywood, left-coast roots. In another nod to NY, It looks like Lauren and Whitney both have a little Tinsley Mortimer hair going on, too. Continue reading for pictures of that OTHER Hills girl, Heidi Montag.
