Trend Alert: Top 5 little white dresses for the party season

By Andrea Petrou on November 19th, 2010

By Emily Borrett.

We’ve been hearing little whispers here and there as the party season approaches about a new, fresh alternative to the trusty LBD (little black dress) that we all rifle out as the party invitations and events begin to mount up – the little white dress. With images of footballers wives and Essex nights out in our minds, we were unconvinced until today, when we saw the pictures of Natalie Portman in New York wearing a white mini-dress from Christian Dior, and frankly looking better than we ever have in our LBDs. So we’ve had to reconsider.

And it’s not just Miss Portman that has traded black for white – the colour was all the rage at the various fashion weeks that have just been and gone, sported by the likes of Diane Kruger and Leigh Lezark. It’s favoured too by modern icon Alexa Chung, who recently wore a very ruffled and feminine LWD (little white dress) out to the GQ Men of the Year awards. If Miss Chung is wearing it, then you know you’re probably on to a good thing.

Check out the gallery above for our top 5 favourite little white dresses in the high street.

Spotted at FINCA’s 25th anniversary event in NYC: Florence Welch, Natalie Portman, Jake Gyllenhaal and Jason Wu

By Andrea Petrou on November 19th, 2010

By Emily Borrett.

The stars were all out for a good cause last night in the Big Apple to celebrate the 25th anniversary of FINCA, an organisation that strives to create work opportunities and improve the standards of living for some of the world’s poorest.

The UK’s own Florence Welch was there looking like a sexy Victorian governess in a dramatic sweep of black draped velvet against snow-white skin and auburn hair – an alternative fashion beauty all the way. Viva Florence! It was only a matter of time before NYC decided to recognise the girl. Also there was cutting edge stylist Kate Young in an adorably oversized cream pussy-bow, teamed with a slouchy blazer and stonking heels, looking like a little kitten we want to take home and spoil. She was definitely giving her companion Jason Wu a run for his money (though you looked lovely in your suit as well, Jase, don’t worry.)

Representing those of the silver screen were Jake Gyllenhaal looking like Mr. Tom Ford in a classic black and white suit, and Adventureland star Margarita Levieva, who showed off her enviable curves in a demure navy tea dress that was neatly nipped in at the waist with a patent skinny belt. With a career that’s really only just beginning to take off, we’ve seen little of this actress, but her style tells us that we want to see more. Watch this fashion space.

However, the true star of the night was FINCA ambassador and actress Natalie Portman, who was looking breathtaking in a classic white minidress from Christian Dior. We’ve all been told by magazines and designers that the LWD (little white dress) is set to become the new classic LBD and, personally, I’ve been a little sceptical – but looking at how Natalie’s rocked the dress, maybe we should reconsider.

Check the gallery above to see who attended the gala.

Venice Film Festival: Natalie Portman, Jessica Alba, Naomi Campbell

By Andrea Petrou on September 2nd, 2010

The Venice Film Festival has kicked off for another year, and Hollywood’s A-listers are already strutting their glam stuff on and off the red carpet.

Jessica Alba was one of the first celebrities to be spotted at the 67th event turning up to her hotel in a cute white ruffled skirt. She later changed into a stunning strapless mini dress complete with a long train, which she teamed up with cage heels for the Machete premier.

Natalie Portman also wowed when she turned up in a plain, yet glam strapless blue frock for the photocall of Black Swan before taking her look one step further in a gorgeous red dress for the premier, while Isabella Ragonese opted for a long ballgown monochrome strapless frock for the event.

And Naomi Campbell also made an appearance turning up in a black puff style black mini-frock and cage heels for a dinner held by Quentin Tarrantino.

Gallery: Angelina Jolie, Anna Paquin and Natalie Portman at the Comic-Con conference

By Shiny writer on July 26th, 2010

The Comic Con conference is reaching it’s forth day and it’s been four glorious days of celeb interviews, parties and press conferences.

Angelina Jolie kicked off day one of the conference, where she turned up in a sexy black leather number to promote her new film Salt. Black was also the colour of choice for Vanessa Hudgens who opted for a strapless frock for the Sucker Punch photocall, while Scarlett Johansson opted for the shade at the Avengers press day.

Others such as Liv Tyler and Natalie Portman went for brighter colours. Natalie opted for in pastels with shorts and a tee, while Liv went for a short bright coloured frock for her the Super photocall. Kelly Brook and Eva Mendes also donned pastel taffeta frocks for the Other Guys Maxim party.

However, not everyone felt the need to dress up. Fashion icon and actress Helen Mirren shunned her normal impeccable frocks for jeans and a tee for the first day of the event.

Celebrity favourite Beyond skin launches new range of ethical shoes

By Andrea Petrou on January 15th, 2010

Beyond skin.jpgDo you want celebrity shoes at an ethical price? If the answers yes then you’ll love this new range by Beyond Skin.

The brand, which has been favoured by celebs such as Cheryl Cole and Natalie Portman, has just launched a new collection, which will be sold at the newly opened Anthropologie store in London’s Regent Street.

The new collection of ballet pumps are made from vintage fabric, sourced from the charity Traid Remade, they may be tad expensive at £68 a pair but with only around 10 versions of each design made, we think it’s definitely worth it.

And ladies who like their shoes with a bit of height are also in luck. The company will be launching a range of evening styles and a range made from recycled bottle tops in March.

We’ll see you at the tills.

Natalie Portman poses in fun and risque outfits for a spread in V Magazine

By Andrea Petrou on November 5th, 2009

I’ve loved Natalie Portman ever since she first caught my eye in Leon when I was 11 (yes I had very liberal parents.)

She’s blossomed ever since into a fully fledged actress, bagging lead roles in Starwars and starring alongside Clive Owen and Jude Law (how lucky is this girl?) in Closer.

So I didn’t expect anything less from her when she took part in this photoshoot for this issue of V-Magazine, which is out today.

Shot by famous photographer Mario Testino the actress poses in a range of fun and risque outfits including swimsuits, Swarvoski crystals, studs and Calvin Klein denim.

Oscar Fashion 2009: Natalie Portman in pink Rodarte

By Andrea Thatcher on February 22nd, 2009

Natalie Portman Oscars.jpg

I really, really hope this is the beginning of seeing more Rodarte on the red carpet. And an auspicious start it was. Natalie Portman was perfectly appropriate for a presenter’s role – fashionable without being overdone. Ever the vegan, she also wore Stella McCartney shoes (always animal friendly), a vintage Rialto clutch and Kwiat jewelry. She stood out in what I think was the only pink dress on the carpet, but kept things simple and classic. And of course was hilarious with Ben Stiller on stage.

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on May 28th, 2008

Cannes last post.jpgClick image to enlarge.

We must say goodbye to the Cannes Film Festival and all the subsequent red carpets for another year. But first one final roundup.

Milla Jovovich is seen here at the premiere of “What Just Happened?”. The bright color of her gown is certainly on trend, but might be a bit too much combined with all the details on the dress.

Michelle Williams talks to Elle in the weeks before Heath Ledger’s death

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on March 6th, 2008

Michelle Williams.jpg

While Elle magazine made a last minute switch and put Natalie Portman on their cover instead of the grieving Michelle Williams, the Williams feature and photo spread still appear in the April issue.

“They were so sweet together,” Ang Lee, who directed Williams and the late Heath Ledger in Brokeback Mountain, told the magazine. “I ran into Heath at the Venice Film Festival, and he told me about the split. I just felt so sad. I didn’t know what to say to him. They made a great effort.”

March issues of Vogue and W with Scarlette Johanssen, Natalie Portman

What’s there really to do on President’s Day but read magazines? A few of our favorite ladies graced the covers of the top glossies. Currently doing the publicity rounds for their new film The Other Boleyn Girl, Scarlett Johansson and Natalie Portman hit the cover for March’s issue of W. Shot by Steven Klein, both ladies are wearing Miu Miu. They both look okay, but honestly we prefer Miu Miu’s ads with Kirsten Dunst.

Scarlett Johansson and Natalie Portman don day dresses at the Berlin Film Festival

By Andrea Thatcher on February 15th, 2008

Boleyn.jpg

The stars of The Other Boleyn Girl looked cute and professional at the Berlin Film Festival today.

Scarlett Johansson and Natalie Portman play sisters and rivals for the affection of King Henry VIII in the much anticipated historical drama. But there’s no need for a style rivalry on this red carpet, both girls wear covered-up frocks that aren’t too dressy for day, but are still sexy and attractive.

They make great fashion role models for women in their twenties. We’ll also admit a certain satisfaction that stars like Johansson also experience ponytail hair.

Everyone’s a shoe designer; update on Diane von Furstenberg and Natalie Portman

By Andrea Thatcher on January 14th, 2008

new%20shoes.jpg

One is famous for designing clothes, one is famous for the chic, ethical choices she makes in clothes (oh yeah, and being an A-list actress); but both Diane von Furstenberg and Natalie Portman are trying their hands for the first time at creating full lines of shoes for spring. New pictures of both lines have recently been popping up online.

First up, on the left, is Diane von Furstenberg’s gold Provence heel. The wide, ribbon-like straps are one of my favorite things on evening shoes right now. They seem to take strappy heels to a more modern place.

It seems the designer and president of the Council of Fashion Designers of America is extending the comfortable, sexy aesthetic she’s famous for in her clothing line to the footwear project as well.

“I wanted to create power shoes for the woman on-the-go and on her feet,” von Furstenberg told Fashion Week Daily. “My shoes are not just pretty accessories; they are functional and serve a purpose. Women on-the-go need power, comfort, and fashion.”

More photos of DVF’s line, and Natalie Portman info and images after the jump.

Celebrity Designer Alert: Natalie Portman to create vegan footwear

By Andrea Thatcher on January 2nd, 2008

Natalie%20Portman%20footwear.jpg

It’s no secret we love Te Cesan, and now we have a reason to love it even more. Natalie Portman has agreed to design a range of vegan-friendly shoes for the New York boutique.

Long known for only wearing shoes from Target and Stella McCartney due to their animal friendly properties, the actress will unveil her collection next month. You can pre-order via the website from the 15th January with prices around the $200 mark – significanly less than most high-fashion vegan shoes out there. You know, all two lines.

A hint of what’s in store reveals a pair of patent red Mary-Janes with 5% of the profits going to charity.

Natalie Portman wears hot pink minidress from Mary Kate & Ashley Olsen’s new line

By Andrea Thatcher on November 14th, 2007

nataliportman_olsens%20dress.jpgAt the premiere of her latest film Mr. Margorium’s Wonder Emporium in Manhattan on Sunday, Natalie Portman walked the red carpet in this hot pink minidress by Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen. I’m not quite sure how I feel about the dress, though. It’s very cute (and super short), but I’m not sure if I’d wear it to a red carpet premiere. But then, maybe the babydoll-esque vibe is just the right look for the premiere of a kid’s movie. I also really like her metallic embroidered clutch and gold metallic shoes, but I’m just not sure they all go together. I think the shoes are right, but I would’ve recommended that Natalie wear a winter white oversized patent leather clutch or bronze or copper metallic clutch, not pewter, pink and silver. What do you think?
