Sales start earlier with deeper discounts

Retailers are attempting to make the best of a disastrous fall season by starting holiday sales earlier, and offering discounts that are more post-holiday than pre.
Retailers are already asking the vendors from which they purchase their merchandise for at least 20 to 25 percent more in markdown money this season. This is nearly three months earlier than these requests typically start – post-Christmas.
Many stores are even canceling some of their fourth-quarter orders, which may lead to even more sales down the line.
