Nicole Richie isn’t trying to “prove” anything with her fashion lines.
The former socialite – who runs House of Harlow 1960 and Winter Kate – admits her ranges will not “please everyone” but she knows how hard she works to get clothing out in the world she knows she loves.
She told website Fashionetc.com: “It’s not about proving myself to anyone. At the end of the day, you can’t please everyone. You have to do things for yourself. I have had many moments in life where I haven’t gotten credit for the work I’ve done. And that’s OK with me.
“My process is still the same. I work very hard, and am serious about my work. That stays true whether anyone sees it or not.”
Style-conscious Nicole now believes choker necklaces are due a “comeback” and expects people to be wearing them regularly soon.
She said: “I went through a serious choker phase. I used to make them for my friends at school. I have a feeling they are going to be making a comeback very soon. Mark my words!”
However, she also thinks there are “no rules” when it comes to accessories and people should be allowed to wear whatever they choose.
She said: “Accessories speak volumes when it comes to a person’s wardrobe, especially when one is dressed down in jeans and t-shirt. So have fun with it-there are no rules.”
Nicole Richie owes her sense of style to her father.
The designer’s singer dad Lionel used to have copies of his outrageous stage outfits made for her when she was a child, making her aware of fashion from an early age.
She told FabSugar.com: “When I was a little girl, my dad would have his costume designer that would make his tour outfits make me matching outfits out of the excess fabric.
“For whatever crazy rhinestone bell bottom outfit hat my dad was wearing with his big Afro, she would make me a dress out of it.”
Nicole is preparing for the holiday season with her new collection for her own range, House of Harlow 1960, with her new set of accessories on sale in a holiday pop-up shop at Los Angeles store Fred Segal.
She added: “The holidays are about being festive and celebrating life, and that’s really what we want to do with this collection.”
While she is selling through the pop up shop, Nicole has no plans to expand her label yet, as she is still making sure she gets the balance right.
She added: “It’s important for me to give each business its own identity, so I’ve really been taking my time and focusing on making each one the best version of itself.
“I’ll probably wait a few seasons before expanding anymore.”

Nicole Richie is designing a fashion line for QVC.
The 30-year-old designer will further expand her work with a “cute” range of clothing for the home shopping network, which will launch in February.
A source told Usmagazine.com: “The line is cute – it can be worn by teeny-tiny girls but also goes up to size XXXL. Nicole has a great fashion sense, and she’s very hands-on.”
The launch of the line will tie in with the premiere of reality TV show ‘Fashion Star’, on which Nicole – who has a line of womenswear called Winter Kate, an accessories line called House of Harlow 1960 and Nicole, her maternity collection – acts as a mentor for aspiring designers.
The reality TV star – who was recently named Influencer of the Year at Accessories Council Excellence (ACE) Awards for House of Harlow 1960 – recently said she designs for women who are not “afraid to take risks” and enjoy having “fun” with their wardrobes.
Describing her typical customer, she said: “[She is] a multitasker, a woman who wears many hats, someone who isn’t afraid to take risks and have fun with fashion.”
The long black dress was at the centre of the fashion world yesterday as celebrities opted for this look at a range of events.
Channelling the look over in the US was Nicole Richie who went for a simple plunge neck version for the 15th Annual Accessories Council Excellence (ACE) Awards.
She was joined at the event by Agyness Deyn who opted for the long black frock in a see through lace version. Over at the MLS Western Conference Championship Victoria Beckham went for a black frock, while baby Harper Seven dressed in grey for the event.
And it was the same fashion story in London with Amber and Yasmin Le Bon both opting for black dresses at the Harpers Bazaar Women of the Year Awards. Amber channelled the lace look while her mother stuck to a classic asymmetric strapless look.
They were joined by Natalia Vordinova who spiced up the back dress with a velvet bustier look. However some celebrities stood out from the black dress crowd. Jessie J went for an 80s look of a blue jumpsuit at gauche gold jacket, while Coco Rocha also went for blue in a strapless dress at the Harpers Bazaar Women of the Year Awards.

Nicole Richie will create her own perfume.
The fashion designer has signed a worldwide fragrance deal with TPR Holdings LLC to launch her own scent which promises to be “cool, classy and edgy”.
Brian Robinson, president of TPR said: “She has a wide breadth of creative talents being an author, a jewellery designer, a fashion designer and an aspirational figure.
“People look favourably on her. She’s done a great job with her image.”
The company are hoping the scent will reflect the 30-year-old style icon’s “very distinct image” and have already begun collaborating with Nicole on fragrance ideas.
Brian added to WWD: “We have put together mood boards to get a feeling of where she sees herself positioned in the fragrance world.”
While working on her fragrance, Nicole will also juggle her role as a judge on ‘Fashion Star’ – which sees aspiring designers compete for a contract to have their products sold in retailers in the US – with designing her clothing and accessories brands Winter Kate and House of Harlow.
Nicole recently revealed she only ever created clothes she would want to wear herself.
She said: “My main goal for this particular collection – and for all the footwear that I design – is I want the shoes to look great but be comfortable at the same time.
“I’m a girl and I love shoes. Who doesn’t want to make exactly what you want?”
The celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe has admitted that she’s “terrified” about the debut of her new fashion line, which will be shown in the upcoming New York Fashion Week. Yay, super-stylists get nervous too!
Rachel, who’s famous in the past for weaving fashion magic over Hollywood’s elite, told the fashion site FabSugar: “Nervous, excited, petrified, anxious, terrified . Did I mention terrified? I’m terrified.” Well, if her taste in clothes is anything to go by then the designs will be good – then again, you never can tell til you see it on the runway..
Despite her trepidation, Rachel Zoe is also excited about her new project, having recently compared finishing a collection to “giving birth”. “Being a designer was the thing that I always said, ‘I’m never going to do this, because I’m too scared to do this’. All of sudden during my presentation this season, I was like ‘Oh my god, why am I doing this, I’m too scared to do this. Then it was like, it was almost like giving birth. When it was over, I was like, ‘This is the most exciting, most challenging adventure. This is new, and this is fun.’ ” We can’t wait to see what she comes up with.
Nicole Richie plans to expand her handbag line every season.
The socialite’s House of Harlow 1960 line have unveiled a 14-piece handbag collection – ranging from a $150 red hard-cased crocodile print clutch to $625 taupe and ivory burn-out pony hair hobo – that will debut next month and Nicole has promised to expand the range further over time.
She said: “Handbags have always been a part of the equation since we first launched the House of Harlow 1960 brand.
“We just needed to make sure all of the components were aligned before setting foot into that category. The collection is quite small in terms of the styles we are launching with. I wanted to make sure that each piece is special and then be able to grow it slowly and organically season after season.”
The seventies-inspired collection incorporates materials such as vintage leather, calf hair and velvet, along with fringe detailing, along with toggles, studs and jaguar head hardware, and Nicole says she always tries to listen to what her customers wants when creating each piece.
She told WWD: “When I design, I always try to design pieces that are universal, meaning anyone can wear and carry it. At this stage of my design process, I really try to gather direct feedback from my customers, whether through in-store personal appearances, my web site, twitter or Facebook.
It really helps me when they provide me with their desires, feedback and comments on what they are looking for, so I can try my best to cater to their needs, yet stay true to the brand’s identity.”
The House of Harlow 1960 handbag collection will be available at Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom and Shopbop.com.

Nicole Richie only creates fashion ranges she would wear herself.
The 29-year-old beauty – who has fashion ranges House of Harlow 1960 and Winter Kate – is launching a new range of shoes, and she thinks it is important for them to comfortable as well as stylish.
She said: “My main goal for this particular collection – and for all the footwear that I design – is I want the shoes to look great but be comfortable at the same time.
“I’m a girl and I love shoes. Who doesn’t want to make exactly what you want?”
The former reality star – who creates jewellery, clothes and shoes through her brands – plans to create a handbag range soon, and hopes they all have an individual feel.
She added to people.com: “It’s important for me to give each one its own identity and really focus on what I want the specific collection to mean.”
Nicole recently confesses she has a closet full of Chanel handbags.
Asked how many of the French designer’s bags she had, she responded: “That’s not a fair question! OK, 30, but I stole a lot of them from my mom!”
This year there’s one trend that’s really stood out on the Cannes Film Festival red carpet, and that’s the white dress. Whether long or short, these lovelies have been spotted on the likes of Cheryl Cole, Alexa Chung, Rachel McAdams and Uma Thurman at the event.
However, they were also a celebrity must-have long before these ladies channelled them at Cannes.
Earlier on in the month Florence Welch was spotted in a sleeved number at the Met Ball, while Jennifer Lopez showed off a short version of this trend on American idol. Penelope Cruz also opted for this hue at the UK premier of Pirates of the Caribbean, while Nicole Richie and Kim Kardashian wore this colour in style at other high profile events.
Nicole Richie owns over 200 pairs of sunglasses.
The reality TV star-turned-designer – whose House of Harlow accessories line carries the eyewear – is often voted one of the world’s most stylish women and admits she has a huge number of shades to help accessorise her fashionable outfits.
She told Teen Vogue magazine: “I view them as fun masks to accessorise your face. In my defence, I make sunglasses, so I have to research-shop, and I own every pair I’ve ever designed.”
Nicole is well known for her signature bohemian look and says she relies on extras to transform her wardrobe staples of jeans and a T-shirt into something special.
She explained: “You change the look with accessories. And by accessories, I mean sunglasses, head scarves, shoes, bed jackets.
“I’m always missing that in-between layer. On the West Coast, you don’t need a full jacket, but you want something more than just a tank.”
The designer also creates footwear but says because she is only 5ft 2in she is more interested in comfort than style.
She said: “Comfort takes precedence for me. These are super-high, but because they have a built-in platform, they don’t feel like it.
“I am not that girl who can do super-arched heels. All the shoes I design have a cushion and a platform.”
