The Olsen twins are becoming creative directors at Superga

By emilyborrett on September 13th, 2011

Is there anything that these twins can’t do? They’ve already got three huge fashion brands (The Row, Elizabeth & James and Olsenboye) and now they’re turning their dainty manicured hands to footwear design as they’re set to take over the creative directorship at Italian show brand Superga.

Steve Madden, who holds the North American license for the brand, said on this new merging of minds: “We do a lot of business with Mary-Kate and Ashley. They’ve become friends.”

Surprisingly, the plucky enterprising twins actually approached Superga about the project, instead of the other way round. Ashley spoke out about their new footwear plans: “We were at a meeting with Steve, and we were wearing Supergas – two years later, it kind of fell into our lap. I really don’t think there’s anything like this brand. It’s a tennis-shoe brand with 100 years under its belt. Superga is really a luxurious brand. We are really hoping to bring it back to its roots.”

We absolutely can’t wait to see what Mary-Kate and Ashley come up with for their S/S designs..

Elizabeth Olsen’s style icons are Diane Keaton and Katharine Hepburn

By emilyborrett on September 12th, 2011

Elizabeth Olsen has revealed that her two biggest style inspirations are the actresses Diane Keaton and Katharine Hepburn.

Elizabeth, who is the younger sister of the famous Olsen twins, has recently been popping up on our style radar in a mixture of vintage-style maxis and European fashion. But it’s not her older sisters that she looks to for inspiration – it’s the icons of the silver screen.

She said: “I always love Diane Keaton and Katherine Hepburn. [Mary-Kate and Ashley always tell me] to always feel comfortable. Their advice is just like, kind of focus on your work and not let anything else come between you and what you want to do and who you are. We don’t actually talk about work much, but they’re just great people and supportive and inspiring and creative.”

For those who don’t know, Katharine Hepburn commandeered masculine dressing in her era and was one of the first women to publicly wear trousers as a fashion statement, while Diane Keaton is famous for her bohemian role as Woody Allen’s love in Annie Hall. Elizabeth has good taste.

Designer spotlight: The Row

Autumn/Winter 2011

Reading the gossip today that the Olsen girls didn’t want to front their own fashion line, The Row, surprised us so much because unlike many other celebrities who tack their name onto a tasteless brand of horrible clothes for a bit of extra cash (AHEM, Katie Price), the Olsens have a genuine talent that they should be proud of. Looking back at the work that the two tiny beauties have produced since The Row’s debut, it’s clear to me that Ashley and Mary-Kate were actually meant to be fashion designers all along.

The girls have really hit their stride with their Autumn/Winter 2011 collection, which took inspiration from children’s tales such as The Fantastic Mr Fox and mixed it up with a good deal of Bianca Jagger 70s glamour for a decadent, playful feel. Extravagant shapes in rich furs combined with very sharp, clean lines and crisp autumnal colours actually made it one of the more interesting takes on 70s style for this season.

Like Victoria Beckham before them, the Olsens will have a little further to go before they are considered to be “proper” fashion designers and not just famous, rich girls that are trying their hand at something new. But like Victoria, the Olsen twins have a genuine love for clothes that flatter the feminine form – it must have been all that Chanel that they got to wear when they wear eleven – and know how to make a good idea great.

Check out the gallery above for our favourite The Row pieces so far. We know that there’ll be plenty more to come.

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen didn’t want to publicly front their fashion line The Row

By emilyborrett on August 23rd, 2011

The Olsen girls have revealed that they didn’t initially want anyone to know that they were the creative force behind their most famous fashion line, “The Row”.

Apparently, Ashley and Mary-Kate were reluctant to let anyone know that they were the designers behind The Row when the project was just starting out and were almost tempted to hire someone to front the brand for them – they were having “far more fun” knowing that potential clients didn’t know who they were.

Ashley said: “We didn’t want people to know that we were behind it. We’d learnt so much about building brands and talking to a specific customer. We did it with our faces at the beginning, and we knew we didn’t want to do that any more. It’s far more fun this way.”

But we think the Olsen girls are far from just pretty, famous faces to sell a product. For starters they’re actually good designers with impeccable taste, and their various sartorial ventures such as Elizabeth & James and The Row have won them a whole ton of respect from the industry. Forget about being  a famous face, girls – just be proud of what you’ve done!

Hot accessory alert: Turbans

Nicole sporting a classic Diane Von Fustenberg turban in March for a UK telly appearance

Vintage glamour has been on our mind ever since ex-Pussycat Doll and femme fatale Nicole Sherzinger was spotted in March wearing a pale mustard-coloured turban (pictured above) for an appearance on Loose Women. It was a brave fashion choice for the singer, who normally sticks with her fail-safe ultra-sexy Herve Leger dresses and heels, but we think it paid off. With a face as smoking hot and sultry and Nicole’s, she looked more glamorous than ever.

Other stars have showed their love for the turban-wrap accessory as well recently; the Olsen twins have been spotted teaming silk black ones with tough leather, flowing black chiffon and lace for a dramatic evening look that has ensured their positions at the top of the fashion-pack further. And well, if the Olsen babes are doing it then we want to as well. Lover of all things vintage Paloma Faith also has a fondness for her silk head-wraps, going all-out with scarlet ones to set off her stage ensembles of leopard-printed wiggle dresses and flame-coloured lipsticks.

If you want to get in on this sumptuous 1930s-inspired fashion action, we’ve got a gallery above for you with our favourite ones available online (including an actual Diane Von Fustenberg turban which will only set you back forty pounds and is an absolute classic – that lady is so good to us!). Check it out above.

The excitement surrounding their first collection ‘The Row’ has barely even settled and yet the hardest working twins in Tinsel town, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, are busy unveiling their latest fashion line ‘Elizabeth and James’ .

The tiny siblings officially unveiled their newest range in L.A. before heading to Neiman Marcus in New York this week. “It was amazing, because it’s something we worked so hard on, and for the first time, we actually got to see a response,” Ashley told USA Today.

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen Introduce their New High-end Line the Row

By Andrea Thatcher on August 29th, 2007

olsen_design_edited.jpg

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are fixtures on both worst dressed lists and in the front row of fashion shows from Marc Jacobs to Balenciaga. We watched them grow up from matching cutesy flowery outfits, selling their monikers to Wal-Mart collections for tweens, to towering platform heels, layered on black sweaters and scarves, and floor-length gowns, becoming muses to avante-garde designers. Now the teeny tiny twins are foraying into high-end clothing with the launch of the Row. Minimalist separates like blazers (see the plaid one worn by Ashley, above) and mini skirts, knit t-shirts starting at $150, and oversize fur coats (breaking the bank at over $3,000) make up the line, to be sold at Barneys. Ashley Olsen spoke to New York Magazine, “Wal-Mart was about the customer. It taught us how to be commercial. This is about me and my sister, and what we like to wear.” The twins are involved in every part of the manufacturing process, working closely with a designer, and Ashley has been caught by paparazzi exiting the factory where the clothes are being made.
