Mary Portas asked by the government to breathe life into high street stores

By Andrea Petrou on May 17th, 2011

Highstreet fix it queen Mary Portas has been summoned by the Government.
Prime Minister David Cameron and his deputy Nick Clegg want her to lead an independent review into the future of the High Street looking at how they can promote the development of local shopping areas and get retailers into those closed down buildings.

Nick Clegg said: “Empty High Streets are a blight on the local economy. Vacant shops are also a wasted opportunity with far reaching consequences. When goods and services start to disappear our sense of community can be weakened and undermined. It is vital therefore that we examine what steps can be taken to revitalise and reinvigorate high street shopping centres across the country.”

Local high streets have suffered over the years, with big brands shunning these small spaces for out of town shopping centres, which attract more people because of free parking offerings.
The internet has also played a big part in the decline of the high street with many of us flocking online to order that dress or pair of jeans without having to move. That said, if you’re like me, you’ll know that nothing beats trying those togs on.

Have you shunned the high street in favour of bigger shopping centres or do you prefer the internet? Leave your comments below or vote to let us know.

Why do you shun the highstreet?
Better and free parking in out of town shopping centres
Better choice in out of town shopping centres
I like the ease of the internet

It’s been a good while since we’ve had a scout about on crafts site Etsy for cool stuff – we’re a big fan of supporting lesser known talent here at Shiny Style and Etsy has tons of it. From vintage-style dresses to home made jewellery, it’s a great place to find pieces that no one else has to keep your look a bit original. Which is why we were so happy to find Rosie Music, a seller that specialises in pieces branded with their own kitsch, cute artwork.

If you admire kooky dressers such as Eliza Doolittle, then it might be worth your while to check Rosie Music out. They sell a range of unisex t-shirts and sweatshirts all showing off their sweet, silly paintings of animals – we adore their designs, which include a painting of a wolf in glasses and an aloof-looking cat in full military regalia.

Their tops and designs would look absolutely perfect dressed down with skinny jeans or leggings for a cool, youthful look. You can check out our favourite Rosie Music sweatshirts in the gallery above.

By Andrea Petrou on September 29th, 2009

louiseredknapp-gal-capital.jpgWhile we’re on the topic of bargain clothing we thought it would only be fair to share the launch of new online fashion site Fashion Union.

Launched this week, the fashion label is said to offer designer inspired fashions for bargain bucks. If you don’t want to take our word for it then maybe you’ll believe one of the site’s fans and all round lovely celebrity Lousie Redknapp who has described the collection as “one of fashions best kept secrets.”

We love the range of jumpers, dresses and of course jeans, which have all been styled on this year’s trends including 80s, punk and sparkle. Get shopping now.

Zara announces online shopping site

By Andrea Petrou on September 25th, 2009

zara.jpgIf you’re a regular reader of ShinyStyle then you’ll know how much I love online shopping. It’s quick and easy and you can do it any time of the day.

I’ve been known to spend a fortune in the wee hours of the morning when insomnia has taken its toll (well beats watching re-runs of Jeremy Kyle).

However one shop I haven’t been able to attack is Zara. I’m not sure why but these Spanish brands don’t like to put their items online (Mango has only just recently made its fashions available to UK users through Asos).

But there’s good news (not for my credit card) as Zara has announced that it plans to launch a transactional website, so we can buy the Zara range online for the first time across Europe and the UK.

The estimated launch date for the retailer’s website is the middle of next year meaning we fashionistas will be able to buy the autumn/winter 2010 collection from the comfort of our beds.

Boutikee brings ethnic and European twist to online fashion

By Andrea Petrou on August 17th, 2009

Vintasian Collection.JPGIt’s been said before but I feel as though I should reinforce it and show how grateful I am to the internet for changing the way we all shop.

We can shop in our pyjamas without being arrested and sent to a loony bin, and save on piling on the makeup just because we have to go outside.

Yes there are many sites dedicated to helping us spend our money and helping us get through the insomniac ridden nights with wide eyed dreams of what will match the dress we just purchased at 3am. Now it seems there’s another one that’s joined the online gang.

Boutikee, launched today, combines ethnic style and vintage clothing giving us style that’s more East Asia and Europe than Eastenders.

We love the Grecian style Asymmetric dress in the Vintasian summer collection, which priced at £79 is a bargain. Polka dot fans will also go dotty over the retro-chic black and white polka dot crop top (£29) and skirt (£39).

However, if you’re a try before you buy girl then you can also visit the stall at Portobello Market, west London every Saturday this summer 2009. Just don’t forget not to change out of your PJs.
