Oscar de la Renta may be an extremely talented designer and one of Hollywood’s most sought-after names when it comes to red carpet gowns, but I actually have a bit of a bone to pick with his new collection. I’ll get on to that in a minute..

It was an absolutely giant body of work with over 60 pieces making up the collection, spanning over a whole rainbow palette of colours that I have to admit do make me very happy. We all know that Oscar de la Renta’s speciality is lavish, gorgeous gowns, and he definitely didn’t skimp on those with giant couture-style puffball skirts playing against delicate lace sleeves and huge origami-structured dresses with florals and interesting folds.

He also did a fine line in his other trademark: the day dresses that are so favoured by the ladies who lunch, such as Michelle Obama, and they were very cute and girlish as normal with romantic 1950s-style skirts and nipped-in waists for a dreamy, summertime feel.

So, this is the bone I have to pick with his collection – there was just too much of it. For me, with so large a collection was just too sprawling and included too many different elements into the collection, which spanned from 60s coat dresses to folk dresses to mad, puffy medieval gowns and beyond – the whole thing just didn’t mesh. Each piece is beautifully designed and created, but has nothing to do with either piece beside it.

So, Oscar, that’s my nitpicking over. Check out the gallery to see some of the highlights from the designer’s giant Spring/Summer 2012 collection.

Oscar de la Renta loves how Sarah Jessica Parker wears his clothes

By emilyborrett on September 13th, 2011

Oscar de la Renta has revealed that he’s a huge fan of SATC star Sarah Jessica Parker and loves that she likes to wear his designs.

SJP is pretty much everyone’s style icon since playing the iconic Carrie Bradshaw for so many years, so we can imagine it’s a pretty great feeling to see her wearing your designs – and she loves Oscar de la Renta.

It’s not only SJP who’s bewitched by Oscar’s feminine, glamorous designs, as other celebrities such as Gisele Bundchen, Jessica Biel and Anne Hathaway all love the brand. But Sarah Jessica seems to have a special place in the designer’s heart.

The designer gushed to E! News: “Well, I love Sarah Jessica [Parker], because she is a friend for a long time. Sarah Jessica is like Diane [Von Furstenberg]; she is very much the spirit of New York, she is the New York girl. I love her.”

Oscar is also a big fan of fellow designer Diane Von Furstenberg, whose show he attended at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week this week.

He said: “I love Diane. We have been friends forever. I have a tremendous admiration for Diane. I came for her because she is the spirit of the 21st Century. Diane is all about beauty, all about creativity, femininity and the aura of femininity.”

What a nice man. Oscar de la Renta seems to like absolutely everyone.

ShinyStyle Golden Globes Gallery: Pretty in pastels

By Kimberley Foster on January 12th, 2009

Dark hues may have been the choice for many starlets, but the Golden Globes were also awash with pastels too. Anyone might have thought it was spring by the way some celebs wore their pretty pale colours. Nudes, soft pinks, pale yellows and blues dominated as the likes of Angelina Jolie, Drew Barrymore and Salma Hayek took their turns in front of the cameras. [Photos: Jim Smeal/BEI/Rex Features]

Oscar de la Renta asks ‘what recession?’

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on January 6th, 2009

Oscar de la Renta.jpg

While many designers are scaling back their fashion week presentations, Oscar de la Renta will be showing twice this season.

“[2008] has a been good year for me,” the designer told The Daily last month. “While some businesses faced tough times, I actually added 15 employees to my company. Sales-wise, the last three months have been solid for us.”

Like Calvin Klein, de la Renta will put on one fashion show for the press, the other for retailers. The shows are slated for 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. on Wednesday February 18.

Glamour 2008 Woman of the Year Awards

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on November 11th, 2008

Glamour is a very black and white thing… or at least it is to the ladies who showed up at Glamour magazine’s 2008 Women of the Year Awards in New York last night. Most seemed to favour the timeless chic of monochrome and really let the fabrics, cut and intricate detailing do all the talking (check out Natalie Portman‘s frock to see exactly what I’m talking about.)

However, not everyone was in black or white mood – America Ferrera, for one, managed to step away from the black and into a bright Oscar de la Renta watercolour fantasy decorated with black paillettes. My personal favourite though would have to be Kate Bosworth, who always adheres to the mantra “less is more” and always comes away better off for it!

Cindy McCain and Laura Bush choose de la Renta for convention

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on September 3rd, 2008

After Michelle Obama caused chatter with her Maria Pinto dress at the Democratic National Convention, we were waiting to see what the Republicans pulled out.

It looks like Cindy McCain’s expedition to the Oscar de la Renta showroom earlier in the summer paid off. John McCain’s wife wore a gold shirtdress by the designer for her plea at the Republican National Convention about hurricane Gustav relief.

By nature of being the least practical of all the runway collections, and perhaps by extension the most frivolous, we always expect big glamour from resort. And Oscar de la Renta’s always delivers.

There’s lots of black and white, tropical colors, and classic silhouettes. Feast your eyes on plenty of pretty confections after the jump – including one of Andre Leon Talley and Anna Wintour.

Gwyneth Paltrow is Vogue’s May 08 cover girl – What do you think?

By Kimberley Foster on April 15th, 2008

vogueusgwynethpaltrowmay08.jpg

After all the controversy surrounding April’s Vogue cover, starring LeBron James and Gisele Bundchen, I am sure Anna Wintour is looking forward to a more peaceful reaction to her choice for the May issue. This month it’s a serene-looking Gwyneth Paltrow who has scored the job, wearing a gold lame ruffled gown from Oscar de la Renta’s pre-fall ’08 collection. But it is what she is photographed with, an Iron Man helmet from her latest flick, that’s got me interested…

Oscar de la Renta to design bags for his O Oscar line

By Andrea Thatcher on February 25th, 2008

Oscar%20de%20la%20Renta.jpg

Oscar de la Renta has announced that he’ll be adding handbags to his lower priced O Oscar line available at department stores like Macys.

This comes after a few evening shoes were added to the collection this year, so it makes sense that the line would explore a full line of accessories like this.

“Handbags are an important accessory for the modern woman who is constantly on the go, adding both style and function to her look,” de la Renta told WWD.

We’ve been rather underwhelmed by the O Oscar clothing line, so lets hope the bags resemble those on the Oscar de la Renta fall runway, at left. Judging by the wholesale prices, the bags will probably retail from around $150 up.

If you’re interested in Oscar de la Renta’s main line, check out Coutorture’s exclusive look at some pieces from his fall 2008 collection.

Jennifer Garner gets it right at the Oscars

By Andrea Thatcher on February 24th, 2008

Jennifer%20Garner.jpg

I love the black Oscar de la Renta dress that Jennifer Garner wore tonight. E! fashion commentator and all around fabulista Kimora Lee thought it was a bit plain, but I loved all the ruffle details at the bottom and her diamonds set it of to perfection. Garner’s latest, “Juno“, is nominated for best picture.

What should Jenna Bush wear down the aisle? Designers weigh in

By Andrea Thatcher on January 30th, 2008

Jenna%20Bush.jpg

While twin sister Barbara is considered the more fashionable Presidential daughter, all eyes will be on Jenna Bush when she weds Henry Hager this spring. We’re still hoping for a white house wedding, but since that seems unlikely we’ll settle for a chic designer gown.

Barbara has connections to Proenza Schouler and Lela Rose, while First Lady Laura Bush can call in heavy hitters like Oscar de la Renta and Carolina Herrera.

What do the experts suggest for Jenna? “I would want Jenna to make the statement, and not just be about the gown itself,” Lela Rose told WWD. Rose suggested strapless sheath with a little volume on the bottom.

Arnold Scaasi thought what would best complement Jenna would be a simple and classic silk satin organza dress. If she plans to wear a train, he told WWD it should be a detachable one that “could be taken off after the ceremony and she could dance the night away. They’re young and peppy. Why shouldn’t they be able to dance around?”

Oscar de la Renta presents pre-fall 2008

By Andrea Thatcher on December 4th, 2007

Oscar%20de%20la%20Renta%20pre-fall%20collage%201.jpg

Oscar de la Renta just may be our dream designer. That designer whose store we would go to if we had a Pretty Woman moment. And his pre-fall 2008 collection presented Monday night in a Park Avenue church really illustrates why. The shapes and looks are simultaniously aspirational, wearable, and artistically pleasing. While there were a few misses – awkwardly shaped wool knit yetti skirts with large leaf patterns – it is amazing how within a 63 look collection de la Renta manages to really work several different themes to winning success in each. The florals, the tweeds, the circle skirts and the slimmer silhouettes – they’re all beautiful. What do we take away from this for fall?

More pictures after the jump.
