After a very mild start to the autumn here in England, the chill has just set in and we expect it to keep this way well into the New Year. Light cardigans and t-shirts are once more being replaced by thick, warming winter warmers as people prepare for Arctic winds (and we hope) snow.
While that black coat that you’ve recycled for years is probably still very wearable, if you are looking to upgrade your winter wardrobe with some new outerwear this season here are five coats that caught our eye.

Blackheart Epic Coloured Faux Fur Coat
Fashion-lovers, there’s an incredibly soft and snuggly winter ahead of us as this season it’s going to be all about making like a wild beast and swathing yourself in layers of the softest, shaggiest fur you can find.
Plenty of designers took inspiration from animals this season, from confusing yet pretty fur strips among round iridescent sequins at Prada, while the Olsen girls used The Fantastic Mr Fox as a source of inspiration for their wild-looking draped furs which were teamed with crisp autumnal colours and stark make-up. Fur (faux, of course) always has and always will be an impossibly glamorous way to keep warm during the winter, but this season fur has a darker, moodier edge – think of coats that look like musky old animal skins and mythical creatures for this season.
Long distressed fur is one of our absolute favourite textures for this season, so if you find the perfect shaggy coat or bag, don’t walk past it. These heavy, animalistic textures are all about making a big statement, so just one piece will give your stark winter wardrobe an automatic update. We’re a huge fan of Blackheart’s coats, which you can find at Asos and in the gallery above – especially their deep plum-coloured fur coat that would look amazing with a simple black dress and dark makeup for a dramatic winter look.
If you’re keen on making a bold statement you should consider spurning realistic faux furs for something a little brighter for a dramatic, unusual look – we are absolutely in love with Ana Konda’s designs for Asos, which include some amazing bright scarlet furs. Check them out – they’d look incredible with bright lipstick.
If you’re hesitant to go all-out and deck yourself out like a wild animal, however, you can still channel the trend with a furry accessory or a piece with a simple fur trim without needing to go the whole hog. River Island is brilliant for fur collars, bags and shoes – we seriously recommend that you stop by their site to see what they’ve got.
To see our favourite fur pieces on the high street, check out the gallery above.

White Print Fur Coat
Thanks to this season's love for a mixture of tactile fabrics, fur is still on the hot list. This white animal print fur coat is from River Island.
There’s nothing that gets me in the mood for Autumn’s arrival than a brand spanking new snuggly, warm coat – luckily the coat is a key piece this season for channelling the Autumn/Winter trends.
On the Burberry Prorsum catwalk it was all about cute duffel coats in cheerfully bright shades of orange, blue, red and yellow, with leather detailing – luckily Topshop has already released a postbox-red coat that’s really similar to the ones seen at Burberry. Just team with a sixties miniskirt and a Breton top and you’ve got a classic look that’s good to go. Another colourful favourite was Asos’ bright and shiny blue rainmac, which is both chic and practical – it’ll look adorable with tights, a tea dress and some retro ankle boots.
Other designers went for a more mad, all-over-the-place approach to mixing textiles and print this season – if you want to get in on this season’s incredibly chic “mad bag lady” look (one I’ve been rocking for years now, I might add) then a tactile or patterned coat is a good place to start. At River Island we loved their white animal-printed fur coat, which could look cool clashing with floral or other animal prints, while at Asos it was all about their thrift-style Aztec printed coat.
If it’s the slick and sensual dominatrix look that you’re after, however, as seen at Louis Vuitton, then try out Topshop for their amazing belted mac. Clever Toppers have updated a classic by adding a leather collar and sleeves for a fetish feel. Wear with a simple black dress and patent heels for a look that’s good to go.
Check out our top 5 Autumn/Winter coats in the gallery above.

I Love 2 Love is an up-and-coming boutique leather company that boasts a fashion-forward capsule of leather jackets that promise to stand the test of time. With generous reductions happening on the site at the moment, now is the time to check them out.
A favourite of mine out of the capsule is IL2L’s asymmetric leather biker jacket – an updated spin on a timeless style made iconic by heart-throbs such as James Dean and Marlon Brando, IL2L has stripped the biker jacket down to its’ bare bones and added in asymmetric angular detail to create a cleaner, more modern look. It’s a bargain for real leather and is an easy way to toughen up a girlie outfit in seconds. Another piece that caught my eye is their pleather hooded bomber jacket, which will be going on my wishlist come pay-day. It’s definitely a cool way to keep your hair dry when it’s raining (or disguise yourself from people you know when you’re doing the Walk of Shame in the morning).
IL2L not only sells their own designs, but also sells hand-picked products from other well-known and well-loved leather brands such as Bench, Fossil, Hooch, Kipling and Lee Cooper.
If you’re looking for a leather jacket at the moment, definitely take a minute to check out their site or check the gallery below for a few of my favourites.

It may not be Cannes, but celebrities have come out to play at the Sundance Film Festival whether they have movies to promote or not. Sarah Jessica Parker, in town for the premiere of her film Smart People, keeps her urban cool even in Park City, Utah proving that you can take the girl out of the city, but … you know. She works black pants tucked into very basic black boots – similar to Bijou Phillips look, far right. SJP breaks up all the black with a gray top and long necklaces. Bijou on the other hand went with a much darker gray top and an awesome short jacket. In the middle, Jessica Alba is thinking big: big hair and big jacket anyway. Guess she wants to keep her baby bump warm and out of sight.

Emily Blunt has been keeping it casual at the Sundance Film Festival where her film The Great Buck Howard is showing. On the left, Emily stays monotone at the premiere of her film with a brown tweedy coat with an oversize collar, and camel-colored boots. It’s a great example of how to stay warm while looking chic. She takes it down a notch in the outfit on the right while hanging out around Park City. Again monochromatic in black, except for more brown boots (we like this pair even better) and a puffer jacket with a fur-lined hood.

It certainly seems like the laid-back attitude and midwestern location of the Sundance Film Festival has stars letting their style guard down. Trying to stay warm may be another part of it, as seen by the variety of outerwear above. Scarves and hats are always big cold-weather style staples, as seen alone or in combination on all the girls above. For who’s wearing what where, keep reading.

If the word cashmere is mentioned, our ears perk up. When our ears hear YumYum, we tend to think of cupcakes. But the cashmere YumYum from TDM Design isn’t for eating, it’s for keeping cozy.
The soft, colorful neck warmers can supposedly be worn as an accessory as seen above, but we don’t see ourselves wearing them indoors anytime soon. We much prefer them layered with another scarf or on their own as outerwear. They’re great for reducing bulk if you don’t want a chunky knit monstrosity wrapped around your neck.
Handmade in Nepal by women working together in cottage industries, the YumYums come in a wide variety of vibrant colors and cost $45.

If you just can’t fathom the idea of sporting a pair of UGGs with your latest outfit, you may want to reconsider your abstinence from this Australian brand that many fashionistas have deemed simply ugg-ly. UGGs boots are putting a fashionable step froward this winter with unique collage styles in suede, leather, and somewhat attractive styles.
Take the UGG Australia Sandra Wedge Boot, $325, for instance. This one features antiqued dark chocolate suede and leather, trimmed with genuine sheepskin cuffs and plenty of lining. A 3″ wedge heel ensures you’ll enjoy height benefits while trekking over snowbanks, and UGGs even encourages you wear it barefoot to make the most of the moisture-wicking micro pile lining. This one easily pairs up with the season’s leggings and skinny pants, without compromising on style.

While procrastinating at work, I came across this Check Wrap Coat by Burberry for $1,395 and realized I’d seen something just like it while shopping at Urban Outfitters the other day. At Urban the Lux Little Edie Cape is only $78. If you belted it, it would look so cute and really similar to the Burberry item. These plaid numbers are perfect for keeping you toasty and comfortable when the weather turns cold, while still looking very city chic.
