Penelope Cruz wants to “slap” women who worry about getting old

By Andrea Petrou on May 19th, 2011

Penelope Cruz wants to “slap” women who worry about getting old.

The 37-year-old actress – who gave birth to her first child Leo with her husband Javier Bardem in January – can’t wait to have wrinkles because she believes they tell a person’s life story.

She said: “When I hear a woman who is in her early 30s is worrying about growing old, I just want to slap her.

“When I’m 80, I want to look in the mirror and see an 80-year-old woman. My grandmother had so many wrinkles and every wrinkle told a story. I want to experience every year of my life for what it is. It doesn’t mean I am against somebody who does a little retouch or [has] plastic surgery. I don’t judge people who do it. I just don’t like how women complain about growing old.”

Family is clearly very important to Penelope who is current starring in ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides’ with Johnny Depp and she revealed she turned to her younger sister Monica for help when her baby bump got in the way of shooting stunts.

She added to the Metro newspaper: “My sister is actually a very good sword fighter because she had done this before in a film and she was very gracious to help me out with the sword fighting scenes in London when I became rounder.”

Celebrity Trends: The White dress

By Andrea Petrou on May 18th, 2011

This year there’s one trend that’s really stood out on the Cannes Film Festival red  carpet, and that’s the white dress. Whether long or short,  these lovelies have been spotted on the likes of Cheryl Cole, Alexa Chung, Rachel McAdams and Uma Thurman at the event.

However, they were also a celebrity must-have long before these ladies channelled them at Cannes.

Earlier on in the month Florence Welch was spotted in a sleeved number at the Met Ball, while Jennifer Lopez showed off a short version of this trend on American idol. Penelope Cruz also opted for this hue at the UK premier of Pirates of the Caribbean, while Nicole Richie and Kim Kardashian wore this colour in style at other high profile events.

Gossip

Penelope Cruz had to dress up as “a poo” on the set of ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides’ after losing a bet with Johnny Depp.

By Andrea Petrou on May 10th, 2011

Penelope Cruz had to dress up as “a poo” on the set of ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides’ after losing a bet with Johnny Depp.

The Oscar-winning actress – who has been friends with her co-star for the past 10 years – has revealed the 47-year-old actor constantly teased her while they were shooting scenes, and even made her walk around as ‘South Park’ character Mr. Hankey the Christmas Poo.

She explained: “You have to be very alert around Johnny because he likes teasing people and he does it when you least expect it.

“Johnny and I are both fans of ‘South Park’ and the character Mr. Hankey the Christmas Poo. It’s absurd but very funny. Johnny made this outfit for me and we had a bet which I lost. And I had to wear the Poo outfit on the set.

“He was on the floor laughing and crying and he took a thousand pictures of me which I hope never come to light. But, of course, now that I’ve said it, I’m sure they will appear somewhere.”

The 37-year-old Spanish star – who has a three-month-old son Leo with her actor husband Javier Bardem – has also revealed when she first went to the US to launch her acting career, she only knew two English phrases – one of which demonstrated how keen she was to eventually work alongside Johnny.

Penelope added to the Daily Mirror newspaper: “When I first came to America I only knew two phrases in English. One was, ‘How are you?’ and the other was, ‘I want to work with Johnny Depp.’

“Then after I worked with him on ‘Blow’, I learned how to say, ‘I want to work with Johnny Depp again!’ He’s very addictive and he just gets better and better over the years.”

Cannes Day 9: Get the look- Penelope Cruz’s red dress

By Andrea Petrou on May 20th, 2010

Penelope Cruz Cannes Auction.jpg

Penelope Cruz stepped out during day 9 of the Canne’s film festival to host an auction in aid of the Jenkins-Penn Haitian relief organisation.

The spanish actress stepped out in a gorgeous red wrap dress and silver shoes to mark the occasion, which aims to raise funds by auctioning off star’s dresses. And one celeb that really came up trump is Salma Hayek who donated the first ever Gucci Couture dress, which she wore to day one of the Cannes film festival.

However, we feel we’ve spoken enough about Salma so we decided to have a trawl around to see if we could find a frock similar to Pen’s at of course, a highstreet price. And we did. Now it’s not exactly the same, but the neckline and length are almost identical to Ms Cruz’s. It’s from Very and we think it’s a steal at £59.

Team it up with flats for a day in the office or with heels and accessories for a night out.

Oscars 2010: red carpet style questions we can’t wait to answer

By laurenbravo on March 7th, 2010

wenn2751592.jpgLauren Bravo reports:

Hurrah hurrah, Oscars night is upon us! As the stars primp, preen and polish up those pebble-sized diamonds, we at ShinyStyle are ready for a night of sumptuous Hollywood fashion.

Ever-dedicated to being first on the scene with style gossip, Andrea and I are all set in our pyjamas with Red Bull and Dairy Milk standing by, to stay up all night and bring you the good, the bad and the ugly from the red carpet…

So as we gear up for the big (Louboutin-ed) kick-off, here are the top five questions I want answering this evening:

Will maxi or mini prevail?
Ok, long dresses are the bread and butter of award ceremonies (making them the panettone and clotted cream of this, the calendar’s most important film event). But in recent years we’ve seen a few steps away from the traditional floor-sweeper and towards minis and flirty ’50s-style ballerina lengths, especially on the younger, hipper starlets. Then there’s always the kooky one or two who will plump for trousers (Meryl, my money’s on you).

Will anybody drown in Mariah’s cleavage?
For once, the woman should be exuding a bit of class. After her acclaimed turn in Precious (for which she frumped up like a pro), one would hope she’d take the chance to dress the part of a serious thespian. But then, if her appearances at the Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice Awards are anything to go by, maybe she’ll stick with the diamanté-encrusted persona that we know and, um, love. Either way, I reckon there’ll be bazoomas on display.

wenn2714773.jpgWill the Brit girls wave the fashion flag?
Kate Winslet can always be relied on for some old-school glamour, usually in a trademark figure-hugging sheath dress. Meanwhile, rising star Carey Mulligan ought to give her a run for her money, with the combination of refined elegance and gamine edge that she’s been displaying throughout awards season. Other British ladies I’ll be excited to see include Emily Blunt, Rosamund Pike and the ever-sexy grand Dame of awards fashion, Helen Mirren.

Which of the Nine girls will come out on top?
It may have been a little bit style-over-substance, but Rob Marshall’s musical homage to Fellini delivered one of the sexiest casts we’ve seen this year. With Marion Cotillard, Penelope Cruz, Kate Hudson, Nicole Kidman and Fergie all representing Nine tonight, I’m keen to see who will bring that showgirl pzazz to the red carpet.

What will 2010′s key colour be?
In previous years we’ve seen black, red, pink and midnight blue all take turns to be Oscar hue du jour. But this year I’m predicting that the stars will keep things pale and interesting with nude, white and pastel shades, as well as a bit of striking monochrome. Provided a sudden downpour doesn’t turn anything see-through, things should be all white on the night… (sorry).

Oscar fashions through the eras: 2009

By Andrea Petrou on March 7th, 2010

On Friday we bought you galleries of all all the Oscar fashions dating right back to the 1930s, and we’re sure you’ll agree they made for some pretty interesting viewing.

Even if we didn’t always agree with the styles. However, with the 2010 Oscars due to happen in a few hours (well 9 to be precise) we wanted to finish off our mini series where we left off and that’s the best dressed celebrities of the 2009 awards. Many of you will remember at least one or two of the dresses sported by some well known actresses (who can forget Sarah Jessica Parker‘s bridal inspired dress?) and we hope this gallery does its job and reminds you.

However, it wasn’t just Jessica who chose to wear bridal, Penelope Cruz and Miley Cyrus also opted for frocks, which could be mistaken for walking down the aisle with instead of down the red carpet.

And remember keep reading because we’ll be bringing you live coverage as all the red action happens tonight.

Oscar Fashion 2009: Best Supporting Actress Penelope Cruz in vintage Balmain

By Andrea Thatcher on February 22nd, 2009

Penelope Cruz.jpg

Seriously, what’s cooler than Balmain? Vintage Balmain. Penelope Cruz had her eye on this vintage piece for eight years and finally decided now was the time to wear it. I can’t help but fear that she stole some girl’s wedding dress out from under her, but glamorous, glitzy white gowns are the trend of the 2009 Oscars. Cruz won the Best Supporting Actress award for Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

ShinyStyle Golden Globes Gallery: Pretty in pastels

By Kimberley Foster on January 12th, 2009

Dark hues may have been the choice for many starlets, but the Golden Globes were also awash with pastels too. Anyone might have thought it was spring by the way some celebs wore their pretty pale colours. Nudes, soft pinks, pale yellows and blues dominated as the likes of Angelina Jolie, Drew Barrymore and Salma Hayek took their turns in front of the cameras. [Photos: Jim Smeal/BEI/Rex Features]

Big night for dark films, and dark dresses, at the Oscars

By Andrea Thatcher on February 25th, 2008

oscars08-blackdresses.jpg

While the stars were certainly seeing red at the Oscars, black was also out in force thanks to red carpet regulars, though there was enough embellishment and detail to decorate an entire wedding party according to our UK team’s trend report. Hillary Swank’s one shoulder Versace dress was very pretty, giving the Oscar winning actress a soft feminine appeal.
