Reese Witherspoon has come under fire by animal rights activists for carrying a python skin bag.
People for the Ethical Treatement of Animals (PETA) have written a statement to the Walk the Line star after she was seen with the £2,370 Chloe bag, revealing how the purses are created.
The group said: “No matter how much Reese paid for the bag, the animals paid a much higher price.
“Every year, millions of snakes are impaled on hooks or nailed to trees by their heads and skinned alive. We can’t imagine that she’d wish to contribute to this hidden suffering, especially for something as frivolous as a fashion accessory that can be replicated with no bloodshed.”
The group – which in 2006 named Reese one of the world’s sexiest vegetarians – claimed the look was easily made without causing harm.
PETA added: “These days, it’s easy to have a look that kills without killing – with fake snake, mock croc, python pleather, and other designer items that pay tribute to the beauty of these animals without massacring them.”
The group have previously targeted celebrities including Paris Hilton, who was pelted with flour during a fashion show in London in 2006 for modelling for Julien Macdonald, a designer who uses fur.

Kelly Brook unveils PETA campaign
Kelly Brook unveils her new PETA campaign targeting exotic-skins trade in Covent Garden, London, on the eve of London Fashion Week.
Kelly Brook unveils her campaign for PETA targeting the exotic skins trade on the eve of London Fashion Week in Covent Garden, London.
The 31 year old model was shot with a snakeskin painted onto her body by singer Bryan Adams for the animal rights group in order to highlight the cruelty suffered by reptiles that are killed for their skin.
Brook says: “It makes my skin crawl to think about the violent ways snakes, lizards, alligators and other exotic creatures are raised and killed for boots, bags and belts.”

Victoria Beckham is craving Lucozade and sweets.
The pregnant fashion designer was spotted sipping the fizzy energy drink between bites of Thorntons toffee during a recent shopping trip.
A source told the Daily Mirror newspaper: “She was shopping in Selfridges last week and stopped every few minutes for a toffee and a chug of orange pop.”
The former Spice Girl – who turned 37 on Sunday (17.04.11) – is expecting her first daughter with her soccer player husband David Beckham, with whom she already has three sons, Brooklyn, 12, Romeo, eight, and six-year-old Cruz.
It seems Victoria’s cravings for sweet treats are evolving as early on in the pregnancy she was reported as having a particular penchant for marmalade on toast and tea.
A source said: “Victoria is having a lot of tea and toast with lashings of marmalade. She can’t get enough of the stuff. Mostly she’s been having it on toast, accompanied by lots of cups of tea.”
To celebrate her birthday, she enjoyed a family lunch with David, their kids and her parents Tony and Jackie Adams in Beverly Hills’ French restaurant Bouchon Bistro at the weekend.
She wrote on her twitter page: “Thank u so much for such beautiful birthday messages!!!! So many beautiful flowers and messages!!!! having a wonderful day with my four boys!!!! x vb (sic)”

This is the PETA ad campaign that has been banned in Montreal, Canada for being too “sexist”. Bosses were in a flap over the ad because they objected to Pamela’s body parts being labelled as if into joints of meat – their objection was that the campaign “objectified” women. Upon arrival to the city for the launch of the campaign, Pammy was denied entry to the event.
Pamela Anderson (if you’re reading Pam, I LOVE YOU) has been collaborating with PETA for several campaigns now highlighting the immoralities of animal cruelty. Everyone’s favourite vegetarian glamazon was furious at Montreal’s objection, saying :”In a city that is known for its’ exotic dancing and for being progressive and edgy, how sad that a woman should be banned from using her own body in a political protest over the suffering of cows and chickens. In some parts of the world, women are forced to cover their bodies with burqas – is that next? I didn’t think that Canada would be so puritanical.”
Dan Matthews, head of the PETA movement also added: “I think that city officials are confusing ‘sexy’ with ‘sexist’.” So what do you think? Sexy or sexist? Share your opinions by voting in our poll and adding comments below.

With all the fuss being kicked up about this business with Elle MacPherson using powdered rhino’s horn as a beauty supplement, it’s nice to see that some other celebrities are a little more animal-friendly. Jenna Dewan-Tatum, wife of Channing Tatum and female lead in dance-flick “Step Up”, has joined forces with animal rights group PETA to speak out about the immoral use of exotic skins in fashion. She stripped off, covered herself in scaly body paint and lazed around sultrily on a branch in a PETA photoshoot that aimed to highlight the cruelty to animals such as snakes and crocodiles for the sake of fashion.
Jenna was reputed to have burst into tears after watching video footage of alligators being used for their skins. She said on the matter: “In the video, there’s this part where they have baby alligators and they club them over the head, and they’re not even dead, and they start to skin them. You can see them writhing in pain and that was awful for me (to see). I couldn’t believe that is what happens for a wallet or a purse.”
She continued, “You see this video and you see the horrendous things that are happening and you can’t be ignorant about it anymore. There’s faux alligator, python, snakeskin – there’s a lot of different things to find, you just have to ask.” Maybe all of us should be a little more conscientious when shopping for a new handbag.

Leona Lewis made quite a statement at last nights Brit awards and it wasn’t just a fashion one.
The former X-Factor winner who was nominated for a few awards made quite a scene when she learned that foie gras would be served at the event and petitioned to have it removed from the menu.
And PETA’s Rose Glover applauded Lewis’ efforts. “Learning that the BRIT Awards is shunning foie gras is music to our ears. Foie gras is too cruel to produce in the UK, and we’re pleased that BRIT Award organizers have deemed it too cruel to serve.”
The popstar also gets voted as one of our best dressed for her futuristic William Tempest silver asymmetric dress, which she teamed up with an 80s style lace cuff and pink shoes.
We think this short structured number is much better than the usual long frocks Leona usually wears.

Victoria Beckham’s PR people have had a busy few weeks and we haven’t had a day go by where she hasn’t popped up on our news radars. It’s been everything from being escorted by police in Marks and Spencer to her bunions (yes we’ve reported about these too).
And it seems that the latest rumour that she is to team up with Marc Jacobs to launch a fur collection could be just another fabrication.
After hearing the ex Spice Girl was spotted over the weekend with the designer and LVMH exec Edo Jaoin in Paris to discuss the range we contacted Peta to get the low down.
A representative told us: ‘Victoria Beckham is a long-time animal lover who is about as likely to wear real fur as she is to wear frumpy flat shoes. She is staunchly opposed to the seal slaughter and knows there is nothing fashionable about trapping, beating, drowning or electrocuting animals for fur.
‘Victoria recently had designers make her a garment from faux fur and is setting a brilliant example to the public as a style icon, as well as her children, by having a look that kills without supporting the killing animals.’
However, we’re not sure whats going on as Edo later tweeted: “Well hanging with Vic B and MJ is going real well, I think they’re talking about a line with fur. Launching pre-emptive PETA strike now.”
Unfortunately we couldn’t get comment from Victoria’s spokespeople but we think this is a clever turn in events to get Ms Beckham inches as high as her heels in the press.
Has Victoria gone too far this time? Tell us what you think about this rumour by leaving your comments below.

Leopard print and fur is once again making it’s style debut this season with a range of celebrities sporting the love it or hate it trend, which manages to worm its way in nearly every other season.
Last week we reported that Pixie Geldof turned up to the Twlilight: New Moon New York premiere wearing a leopard print fake-fur gilet, while Alexa Chung and Lily Donaldson were also spotted in this trend at a fashion awards ceremony last week.
However, there will always be some designers and stars who take this trend that one step further opting for the real thing. This has caused a myriad of controversy over the years, with campaigners strongly protesting against it.
Many moons ago supermodels including Naomi Campbell and Cindy Crawford leant their support to a PETA campaign stating they would rather go nude than wear fur. However, Naomi Campbell went back on this a few years ago posing in a real fur jacket on the catwalk. Donna Karen has also been criticised for using the real thing in her collections.
And it seems the rage continues with PETA creating a Fur-Free Friday, after Thanksgiving where animal activists are going out of their way to remind holiday sale shoppers not to include fur on their shopping lists. One celebrity backing this campaign is actress Eva Mendes who said: “I didn’t always know how animals were killed for their fur, and I even wore fur once myself.”
However after she learnt that millions of animals are killed every year in the fur industry, she “swore that [she'd] never wear it again.”
She’s therefore advised us to fake it this season. We’ve taken heed and put together a gallery of the best fake fur coats and jackets out there.
However we want to hear from you. Do you agree that real fur is wrong or are protesters making too much of a big deal about it.

Designer collaborations, Gossip
By Andrea Petrou on November 24th, 2009
We’ve reported on many a great designer and celebrity collaboration but we have to say we’re particularly excited about this one.
If the rumours, first started in OK Magazine, are to be believed Leona Lewis and Stella McCartney are teaming up to launch a range of animal-friendly clothing.
We think this is a match made in veggie heaven for X-Factor winner Leona who doesn’t wear suede, leather or other animal products and is public supporter of PETA, and Stella who has been a long-time vegetarian.
According to OK, a friend claimed Leona said: “I’m on a mission. I’d love to promote a line of non-leather bags and shoes that are affordable. I think more needs to be available and not so expensive.”
We really hope this isn’t a he said, she said story because we really think the two ladies could do amazing things together. Afterall Leona has great fashion sense and, well we all know about Stella’s talents.
We’ve already started guessing what the two may call the range.

Just one month after Peta asked Zappos to stop selling fur, the online retailer has bowed to consumer pressure and will no longer be selling items that use fur.
It looks like they must have pulled their stock of fur items immediately since a search for fur on their site turns up on faux items.
“Zappos.com joins Target, QVC, Home Shopping Network, Nike, Polo Ralph Lauren, Gap, Forever 21, Wet Seal and dozens of other companies and designers that have gone fur-free,” said Pulin Modi, the street team supervisor for peta2.

From our U.K. fashion blog, Catwalk Queen:

PETA protesters crashed the special New York runway show of Alexander McQueen’s fall collection on Wednesday.
The edited fashion show of 38 looks was disrupted by two PETA members who ambushed the runway with signs with blood-red paint which read: “Fur on your back, blood on your hands,” before being tackled by security guards and taken away.

Wow, that is one harsh graphic. I’ve certainly thought the Olsens were too skinny, or God-forbid looked a little trashy on occasion, but I’d never come up with something like that. But PETA did. The Olsen twins have felt the full force of PETA’s wrath over their decision to wear fur, with a new online campaign which features a creepy spoof dress-up game nicknaming them ‘Hairy-Kate’ and ‘Trashley’ Olsen. ‘Dress up the Trollsens’ asks users to dress the girls with ‘fatal fashion’ items including dead dogs, bleeding fur coats, choked chinchilla caps and murdered mink miniskirts. Unnecessary and harsh it may be, but no doubt it will help secure PETA even more publicity. Furthermore, a video parody of a Full House episode is also available to watch – but beware of graphic scenes of animal cruelty.

Eva Mendes is the latest to say she’d rather go naked then wear fur for the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals’ famous campaign. Eva says that PETA wrote her a “beautiful” letter after she naively wore a fur wrap to her first premiere and she vowed then to never wear fur again. While announcing an anti-fur stance isn’t all that controversial, an alliance with PETA can be given their contentious history with the fashion community. We wonder if certain designers are reticent to work with stars who pose for the organization that causes them so many headaches.
