Philip Treacy gifted 25 hats to Dame Elizabeth Taylor

By Andrea Petrou on July 12th, 2011

Philip Treacy gifted 25 hats to Dame Elizabeth Taylor.

The famed milliner found the late screen legend to be a “sweetheart” when they met and was pleased he was able to surprise her with the extravagant present after she originally only requested a hatpin.

He recalled: “A couple of years ago, I got a phone call, would Mr. Treacy make a hatpin for Elizabeth Taylor? I said, ‘Might Miss Taylor like a hat to go with the hatpin?’ and the answer was yes.

“I went to see her at the Dorchester. I didn’t know whether I was going to be dealing with a very tricky person but she was a sweetheart.

“I thought it would be entertaining to do a hat show on her in her room – because, after all, she is an old lady. I tried 25 hats on her.

“She kept saying, ‘Which hat can I have?’ And at the end I said, ‘You can have them all.’ I gave her 25 hats.

“She said, ‘I must do something for you in return.’ But I’d got my return just by hanging out with her.”

Philip has designed for a range of celebrities, including Princess Beatrice, Lady Gaga and the late Isabella Blow, but insists not all of his customers are “crazy”.

He added: “I love the romance of what I do, although because of Isabella, Lady Gaga and Grace Jones, people think I have crazy customers. Sometimes I get more enthusiasm from the housewife who wants a hat and believes in it.”

Philip Treacy believes hats do not have to be “eccentric”.

By Andrea Petrou on June 15th, 2011

Philip Treacy believes hats do not have to be “eccentric”.

The renowned milliner – who has designed headwear for Victoria Beckham and Duchess Catherine – insists people do not necessarily have to choose a hat that matches their clothing, just something they feel good in.

He told the Wall Street Journal: “The hat is a symbol of Englishness.

“It’s an expression of individuality and, as such, one should choose a hat that one feels good about. It need not be eccentric; the look could be subtle . Not matching is the new matching.”

Fellow milliner Stephen Jones – who has created headgear for Dior and Vivienne Westwood – has also issued a number of headwear tips, urging visitors to horse race meeting Royal Ascot, which requires attendees to wear a hat, to bear all sides of the headwear in mind when deciding which item to wear.

He advised: “Take a hand mirror when you choose a hat, remember there are two sides and a back too!

“Wear the hat at home first, so you get used to the balance.

“Hairgrips are a hat’s best friend, but it’s even better to have your hat put on by your hairdresser if you can.

“Hats can be so many things: tricornes, boaters, bonnets, caps, berets, cloches, headdresses, fascinators, veils, turbans – so don’t be afraid to try new styles and have fun!”

Princess Beatrice’s royal wedding hat has attracted a bid of £18,400

By Andrea Petrou on May 18th, 2011

Princess Beatrice’s royal wedding hat has attracted a bid of £18,400.

The 22-year-old royal listed the bizarre Philip Treacy creation on auction website eBay in order to make money for the Little Bee Initiative, a charitable organisation set up by the princess to raise money for Children in Crisis and Unicef and she is astonished by the response so far.

Bidding on the hat – which has been compared with pretzels, spaghetti and toilet seats in spoof internet videos – was started by British businessman Duncan Bannatyne, best known for his role on UK TV show ‘Dragon’s Den’, who offered £5,000 within minutes of the listing going live.

Other high-profile bidders have included Australian children’s group The Wiggles, who offered to pay £17,500 for the headwear.

Blue Wiggle Anthony Field said: “We wear some pretty crazy costumes on stage, but this hat beats them all – it could bring about an Australian republic all by itself!

“When we heard about the auction we knew we had to bid – we’re ambassadors for Unicef and we think it’s great that Princess Beatrice has chosen to support children in great need.”

They also joked they would donate the accessory to the Australian cricket captain to use next time the team play England.

Anthony added: “We might give it to Michael Clarke to wear when he bats against the Poms next time – it would certainly distract the bowler.”

Speaking about the auction – which closes in four days time – Beatrice has said: “I’ve been amazed by the amount of attention the hat has attracted.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity to raise as much money as possible for two fantastic charities. I hope whoever wins the auction has as much fun with the hat as I have.”

Lady Gaga claims her hats keep the devil away

By Andrea Petrou on June 3rd, 2010

We thought Lady Gaga‘s penchant for headpieces was part of her funky fashion. However, it seems it goes a little bit further than that.

In a Q&A event with her fans at showstudio.com the lady, who is nearly always seen in headpieces usually from milliner Philip Treacy, said her hat choices protect her from evil.

“The more interesting and outrageous the better,” she said.

“For me, it keeps the devil away.

“I always like when I have a hat that’s big enough to keep people away at pretentious parties, it’s protection.’”

Well we suppose it’s a funky take from a tin foil hat.

Gallery: The Sex and the City 2 London Premier

By Andrea Petrou on May 28th, 2010

It’s finally happened. The SATC2 film has officially opened in UK cinemas today. And last night the stars, and of course our four favourite girls, were out in force to celebrate the London Premier.

We were lucky enough to get there and see all the action for ourselves, and unlike many premiers where the stars pose for a second on the red carpet before being pulled away, the four girls were more than happy to talk to all their fans from the balcony of the Odeon Cinema in Leicester Square.

Sarah Jessica Parker turned up to the event in a strapless black Alexander McQueen wiggle hem dress and bag and heels. She also, as predicted, went for a huge attention grabbing black hat by Philip Treacy (be careful Lady Gaga someone may be stealing your headpiece crown)

She also made a tribute to the late designer, saying: ”There’s only one person I could have worn tonight and that was Alexander McQueen. Lee, this is for you. I miss you very much.”

The fashionista then changed into a blue long gown for the afterparty held at the Orangery in Kensington.

Kristin Davis also wowed us on the red carpet with her vintage gold empire line Norman Norell halterneck gown, which she teamed with Jimmy Choo shoes, before going for a green taffeta frock for the after party while Cynthia Nixon went for a turquoise frock by Narciso Rodriguez, which she teamed up with Christian Louboutin shoes. She too changed into a shorter, more casual black and white patterned strapless dress for the afterparty.

However, Kim Cattrall kept her black Thierry Mugler gown and Manolo Blahnik heels on for both events, and unlike the other stars who were rumoured to have left the afterparty after only two hours, Kim rolled in at 1:30.

Other guests we caught on the red carpet were Alexandra Burke, Rachel Stevens and Tess Daly. We won’t spoil the film for you, but we will say expect lots of laughs and definitely make it a night out with the girls.

View our gallery for all the style of the night.
