Top five designer metallic eye looks for SS 2012

By Andrea Petrou on January 19th, 2012

Metallics are no strangers to the fashion world, often making an appearance on clothing, in hair and of course eye make-up and next season they make more than just a cameo.

For Spring/Summer 2012 this trend has a leading role in the eye make-up show. However, unlike this season where metallics were dark and bold, next season is all about pale shimmery hues.

Copy the look seen on the Chanel, Ralph Lauren and Gucci catwalks and go for an almost white metallic eyeshadow to make your eyes stand out.

To combine this, and the smokey trend gently brush lower lids with this hue, but not too much- this trend is all about softness.

See the gallery below for our top five designer looks.

Five key pieces to carry you into Autumn/Winter this year

By emilyborrett on July 13th, 2010

While summer could hardly be considered drawing to a close – I mean, it’s only July – it’s that transitional time of year for fashion when the new Autumn/Winter lines arrive, and we begin to idly plan what we’ll be wearing next season once the sun’s finally gone away. To prevent any of you ladies getting into a flap about what you should be buying for your autumn wardrobes when you still haven’t sorted out your wardrobe for your impending summer holiday, here is your Autumn wish-list, courtesy of Shiny Style.

Those whose summer diets haven’t really gone the way as planned will be happy to know that they don’t have to stress about body-con this year, as the maxi-dress will still be going strong once the holidays are over. Richard Nicolls’ collection is an example of how we should be rocking floor-lengths this Autumn/Winter. Trade in bright, summer-friendly prints and fabrics for something a little more luxe; think rich velvets, lace, chiffon and feathers. After all, winter is the party season.

However, if you’re looking for something a teensy bit more form-fitting, be on the lookout for more 1950s dress shapes in the shops this autumn. The full-skirted dresses as seen on the Louis Vuitton catwalks were sexed up with corset tops, creating the perfect balance between ladylike and sexy.

You should also get ready to dress for sub-zero temperatures as the hot trend for the upcoming fashion season is.. sheepskin! Perfect for cold winter weather, Phillip Lim showed us on the catwalk how to make sheepskin work for us: opt for leather jackets with a sheepskin collar and lining for an instant update on the biker-girl trend. Sheepskin will also be a strong presence in footwear once summer is past. Keep an eye out for workman’s boots with sheepskin this winter as seen on the catwalks of Burberry Prorsum – a coolier, grungier version of the shoe boot that will keep your tootsies warm all winter.Caramel and camel tones will continue to be stylish, as seen on the catwalk for Chloe’s ready-to-wear show. If you don’t want to go head-to-toe caramel, an easy way to incorporate the trend into your wardrobe is a tailored camel coat that will keep you snug during the winter.

Check the gallery below for this year’s A/W trends.

Get the look: Alexa Chung’s Met Ball shoes

By Andrea Petrou on May 6th, 2010

Alexa Chung Met ball-400.jpg

Unlike many of the A-listers that turned up in fab frocks for the Met Ball over the weekend, Alexa Chung opted for an androgenous style.

She turned up at the fashion focused event looking stunning in a Phillip Lim tux, which made her stand out from the crowd in a good way. To give the look a more femine feel Ms Chung also teamed this up with a cutesy girly blouse, which looks suspiciously like Chanel, a brand that Alexa is a huge fan of.

However, one of our favourite parts of this outfit was Alexa’s black shoes. We’re currently trying to find out where these are from (if you know please tell us by leaving your comments below) but we’ve found a very similar, and we’re sure, cheaper pair from Shudoo.

These Bertie Seychelles have a peep toe, which is perfect for the summer, and come in at a very reasonable £80.

Grab them now.

3.1 Phillip Lim SS 2010 Ready to wear now available at thecorner.com

By alanamcverry on April 20th, 2010

homepage Phillip Lim uk.jpgPhillip Lim’s collections have year on year astounded me with their perfect balances of the simple and the detailed, the sensible and the whimsical, the minimal and the profoundly stunning. Many high fashion designers favour the fantastical over the real, and produce spectacles only suitable for the waif-ly thin giraffes that grace the arena of the members only catwalk. Phillip Lim, on the other hand, seems to have a knack for producing items that aren’t only focused on sprucing up the unquestionably svelte . Not only this, his visions actually work well within the trials and tribulations of our day to day existences. Phillip Lim seems to be marrying the fabulous with the functional once again with his new collection, even introducing a beautiful lipstick red suit (aka fabulous) which is machine washable (I kid you not). 3.1′s SS Ready to Wear Collection continues in the spirit of clean lines, luxurious fabrics and homemade accents that Lim is famous for; but also incorporates a primitive collage concept inspired by a viewing of the Picasso: Mosqueteros show at the Gagosian gallery in New York. This collection of juxtapositions is a definitive contrast to previous collections that were drawn together by less abstract themes.Either way he has undeniably pulled out a winner of sumptuous sexy simplicity that has something in it for everyone. Those new to Lim’s work have much to look forward to in this veritable feast of fancies that is now available at www.thecorner.com ‘s virtual space as a new mini-store. I urge you online to observe and adore. But beware, the collection doesn’t come cheap, but think of it as an investment, a battle against the barrels of primark, topshop goods you throw out with the fall of each fashion fad. At least one thing is for sure, simple and elegant never goes out of style.

The new collection of Gap Design Editions white shirts are now available in store and online, but they’re selling out quickly. If you missed out last time, don’t dawdle. Priced at $78 for a shirt, $88 for a dress, they’ll go extra quick.

Our favorite is the low tie-neck top by Phillip Lim, not pictured. The other designers include Band of Outsiders, Michael Bastian, Three AsFour and this year jewelry designer Philip Crangi.

By Andrea Thatcher on November 16th, 2007

rogan%20bono.jpg

Edun designer Rogan Gregory, seen here with Bono and wife Ali Hewson, took home the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund award at last night’s 7th on Sale gala. The ethical clothing designer has beaten out tough competition to win the $200,000 prize – like runners up Phillip Lim and jewelry designer Philip Crangi, who each recieved $50,000. Other finalists included Erin Fetherston, who will likely win in her own way with her Target collection, Scott Sternberg of Band of Outsiders, Michael Bastian and Victoria Bartlett of VPL, and Angela Donhauser and Adi Gil of Threeasfour among others. This is the first year that a business advisory committee made up of presidents and CEOs of labels like Calvin Klein, Cole Haan, and Diane Von Furstenberg will provide guidance and advice for all finalists.

For some pictures of the winner’s fall collection, click over to the next page.

Start doing your crunches! Midriff-baring tops are back

By Andrea Thatcher on October 10th, 2007

Taking a very odd cue from the Spice Girls reunion and Britney Spears’ disastrous “comeback” performance at the MTV Video Music Awards, belly-baring tops are back. Marc Jacobs, Anna Sui, and Phillip Lim (shown) all sent models down their spring runways in tops that showed off the models ribbed, not ripped, tummies. Of all the styles to bring back, we couldn’t have had something a little more user friendly?
