Trend Alert: Tartan

It’s time to get on board with one of this season’s snuggliest and most wearable trends: tartan. No, you don’t have to start dressing like Princess Anne, don’t worry..

Tartan and check fabrics were all over the catwalks for the Autumn/Winter shows, from tough and masculine grey check twin-sets at Yves Saint Laurent to sixties-style checked military coats at Burberry Prorsum and blanket skirts at Rag & Bone.

We’re desperately keeping our eye out for a plaid maxi-skirt that we can wear with tough boots and a simple white T-shirt for for a laid-back 90s grunge look, but no joy yet. However, the high street is already working with this trend well. We love Topshop’s leather and check bomber jacket, which would look so so good with a pair of cigarette pants. Meanwhile at Asos they’re already selling bold tartan capes in eye-catching colours – the chicest way to wrap up warm this winter.

The best variety of tartan fashion, however, is at River Island. Their high-waisted 1940s style trousers worn with a silk blouse would be European perfection. Our top buy though is the checked pair of navy blue lace-up shoes with bow detailing – just put those bad boys on with a tea dress and you’re good to go with a quirky, British look.

Check out the gallery above for our favourite tartan pieces on the high street.

Milan Fashion Week: D&G pipes up for plaid

By Andrea Thatcher on February 19th, 2008

If you haven’t picked up on it yet, plaid is going to be big for fall. Preppy plaid, plaid tartan, 90′s grunge plaid, it has all had its place on the runway. And it all had its place on one single runway in the D&G show yesterday, with about 90% of the pieces shown featuring some sort of loud plaid print.

Dolce & Gabanna took a very English countryside aesthetic and made it a bit more flowy and feminine and, well, Italian. This would be a great collection to choose a few pieces from to update your fall wardrobe with the checked trend, even if we wouldn’t suggest the head-to-toe looks on the catwalk.

New York Fashion Week: Preen

By Catwalk Queen on February 4th, 2008

Our British sister blog Catwalk Queen gives us their take on the Preen A/W 2008-09 show…

Making their second New York Fashion Week outing, Preen represented the Brits at their autumn/winter show yesterday. Storming out onto the runway first was model Lily Donaldson in a grungey plaid cocoon jacket that I have instantly fallen in love with. Designers Justin Thornton and Thea Bregazzi took inspiration from Kurt Cobain and Kim Basinger in the film 9 1/2 Weeks to create oversized coats and jumpsuits.

Add hunter red plaid to your fall wardrobe

By Andrea Thatcher on October 17th, 2007

Grunge fashion first walked down the runway when Marc Jacobs was designing for Perry Ellis. The collection wasn’t a hit and Jacobs was immediately fired from his post. Jacobs tried again for his fall/winter 2007 collection, but again the floppy hats and ’90s revival look didn’t quit catch on (read about it at sister site Catwalkqueen.tv). Perhaps Jacobs took the idea of a revival a bit too literally, for some grunge looks did stick. Plaid has lasted a few seasons now, but it’s not the loose flannel type, it’s the tailored hunter red plaid that’s made a comeback. This 3.1 Phillip Lim appeared on his fall runway, now sold out at Net-a-porter.com. For a cheaper, still available way to add a dash of plaid to your outfit, try this doctor’s bag, $36 at fredflare.com.

Burberry Manor bags enjoy a metallic touch

By Andrea Thatcher on October 3rd, 2007

Burberry%20Manor.jpg
Burberry handbags are stepping up to the metallic trend this season with the release of the Manor bag (available in both a standard and miniature version), along with a new line of rounded satchels and hobos. It’s a fresh take on the traditionally conservative brand that has brought us more conventional styles in seasons past. The Burberry quilted Manor bag ($1,395) distinguishes itself with dark nickel leather and silver-tone hardware. The top handles feature a key charm, and the front locks up tight with an extended tab closure and padlock detailing. The Burberry quilted mini Manor ($1,195) is similar in style, but a compact version at only 7.5″ high and 10″ wide. It’s a fresh take on the season’s frame bags in a classic Burberry plaid print.

Plaid wraps–expensive to cheap from Burberry to Urban Outfitters

By Andrea Thatcher on September 27th, 2007

While procrastinating at work, I came across this Check Wrap Coat by Burberry for $1,395 and realized I’d seen something just like it while shopping at Urban Outfitters the other day. At Urban the Lux Little Edie Cape is only $78. If you belted it, it would look so cute and really similar to the Burberry item. These plaid numbers are perfect for keeping you toasty and comfortable when the weather turns cold, while still looking very city chic.

Cute cropped plaid jacket from Forever 21

By Andrea Thatcher on September 12th, 2007

The Budget Fashionista, another great fashion blog, showed a super cute plaid jacket from Chloé (above), priced at a rent breaking $2,270 at Neiman Marcus, and a just-as-cute version from Nordstrom for only $78. Since plaid continues to be in this fall and since I’m a poor New Yorker who can’t afford even $78 for a jacket, I bring you the cheaper cheap version of the Chloé jacket. This plaid jacket from Forever 21’s Heritage 1981 collection is only $22! It’s like a downtown version of Chloé’s uptown look and you can buy it while still affording to keep your electricity on.
