Fashion weekend for curvy girls comes to London this February

By Elisabeth Edvardsen on January 8th, 2013

Life as a curvy girl is fabulous but can be difficult when the fashion world congregates every spring and autumn to send thin models down catwalks with the latest designs.

Any voluptuous woman with an interest in fashion will know how to take inspiration from the catwalk and adapt the trends to suit her shape. But it’s great news that we’ve now got a fashion weekend of our own!

This February, running parallel with London Fashion Week, the capital will host the UK’s first official plus size fashion weekend in stylish Shoreditch.

The British Plus Size Fashion Weekend (previously the London Plus Size Fashion Weekend) will be paving the way in the industry for plus size designers, retailers and consumers bridging the gap and bringing everyone together in two amazing venues, hosted by inspirational speakers such as Velvet D’Armour (the first plus size model to walk in a Jean Paul Gaultier show) and international renowned blogger and CEO of America plus size magazine Skorch, Jessica Kane.

Adele wants to be styled by Burberry for awards season

By emilyborrett on September 7th, 2011

The singer Adele has admitted that she’s dying to have Christopher Bailey, creative director of Burberry, style her for the next upcoming awards season.

Adele is already having a major fashion moment right now, having just made the cover of UK Vogue – but we think seeing the singer decked out in Burberry would be the icing on the cake. Apparently, they’re already planning a style collaboration. Oh, to be a celebrity…

The Someone Like You singer told Vogue: “I love old school. Chanel, Prada, you know. And Burberry, definitely. I’ve met Christopher Bailey a few times. He’s definitely going to dress me for the next lot of awards – if I’m nominated. I’ve always loved Burberry. I remember saving for three years to get my first bag before I got signed. Five hundred quid, I think it was, made of canvas with the logo like a satchel.”

Okay, now I’m just gonna put something out there. Burberry, if you get bored of styling Adele, I’d also like to be styled by you for awards season. I know I won’t be invited or anything – just something beautiful to wear while I watch it on TV, really… No? Oh, okay then.

As Adele makes the cover of Vogue UK, we take a look at our favourite curvy celebrities

Adele flatters her curves with classic LBDs and vintage-inspired makeup for an hourglass sex-siren look

It’s been quite a big week for plus-sized beauties everywhere, as the UK singer Adele has just become the face of Vogue UK’S October issue. The singer, who’s been attacked and slated for her voluptuous figure in the past must have just proved any haters wrong because the photographs are absolutely stunning. Could the notoriously fattist fashion industry be slowly changing it’s tune?

As someone who spent the majority of their teens being overweight, seeing real women in the fashion industry and in the media is something that is very important to me – with childhood eating disorders and body issues at an all-time high, it is more important than ever that young girls should grow up to see beautiful, relatable and healthy women as role models.

Today at ShinyStyle we’re celebrating some of the fashion and celebrity world’s sexiest and fun-loving curvy women, who wholeheartedly embrace fashion and have fashion embrace them back. From the bootylicious Amazonian jiggle of Beyonce, who completely controls and commands her audience when she performs in curve-hugging dramatic stage costumes, to Gossip singer Beth Ditto stomping the runways of Jean-Paul Gaultier, there are already some women out there promoting the idea of self-love and healthy body image. There just aren’t enough of them yet.

Unfortunuately, some of our curvy beauty idols have succumbed themselves to the pressure of dieting to fit into a starvation-happy culture. Who could forget Sophie Dahl’s transformation from the lusciously curvy, china-doll purring pussycat that used to own the catwalks to the stick-thin woman she is now, all eyes and cheekbones? You could say that it’s her prerogative to weigh whatever she wants – and of course, it is. But the fact that even a supermodel who once lived off her curves can buckle under the pressure of the media’s ideal is scary, and shows us that we need these healthy role models more than ever.

Kimberley Walsh has found the confidence to wear skinny jeans

By emilyborrett on September 1st, 2011

Kimberley Walsh says that her recent weight loss has given her the confidence to wear skinny jeans.

The Girls Aloud singer has always been one of the curvier, more womanly-shaped members of the girl group, but since losing 7lbs she feels a lot more comfortable to make daring fashion choices.

Kimberley revealed: “I’ve been doing a new workout programme for over a year now. It doesn’t happen overnight, but it’s changed my shape. I’ve lost maybe 7lbs – I put on a pair of jeans and think, ‘Oh! My legs didn’t look that shape before.’ That’s progress! It definitely opens things up a lot more. Now I’ve evened out my shape a bit, I’m getting slightly more daring. I’ve worn skinny jeans a few times, which I hadn’t done for a while.”

There is always the danger of getting “carrot legs” if you’re a curvy girl wearing skinny jeans, but to be honest we’ve never seen Kimberley look bad in a pair of jeans before. But congratulations to Kim on her new legs – now she can wear her Cheap Mondays til the cows come home.

Kelly Osbourne calls Christina Aguilera a “fat bitch”

By emilyborrett on August 4th, 2011

Christina's been slated for her recent weight gain, but she looks fine to us- what do you think?

There’s major beef going down, as Kelly Osbourne has once again publicly insulted a celebrity – this time her target is the Burlesque actress and singer Christina Aguilera, whose figure has become a little fuller recently.

Kelly laid into the star as a member of the judging panel on the E!’s Fashion Police show, where  she had to pass comment on a photograph of Christina wearing a tight black dress.

She said: “Maybe she’s just becoming the fat bitch she was always born to be. I don’t know. She was a **** to me. She called me fat for so many f**king years, so you know what? F**k you, you’re fat too.” BEEF.

The comedian Joan Rivers, famous for her acid tongue, also chimed in likening Xtina to Snooki from Jersey Shore, adding, “She looks like Snooki’s Scandinavian cousin. It’s a pretty dress but she’s stuffed into it.” And for Joan, that’s pretty mild.

Quick Christina, think of something mean to say and tweet it right now! We love a good celebrity spat.

Teeny-tiny fashion lovers under 5’3 will be excited and happy to read that fashion giants Asos have released their new petite collection.

The new petite range is a cute and trend-aware collection of mini-dresses, quirky printed shirts and sixties-inspired coats and tunics. We love their modern take on the classic mac coat, which has biker-style lapels and will look amazing with one of their belted chiffon dresses and a pair of Autumn boots.

There’s also some great pieces for anyone wanting to rock the boyish, tailored trend, as they’ve got a selection of chic tapered trousers that would go perfectly with a high-necked blouse and heels.

It’s a gorgeous effort – it’s no wonder that Asos is one of the most successful shops in the country when they cater for different body shapes this well. Check out our favourites in the gallery above now!

Christina Hendricks will design her own line of swimwear

By Andrea Petrou on July 25th, 2011

Christina Hendricks will design her own line of swimwear.

The ‘Mad Men’ actress is known for her curvy figure, but has revealed in the past her fuller chest and small waist make it difficult to source suitable beachwear and as a result she has decided to create her own collection.

An insider told The Mail on Sunday newspaper: “Christina is a US size 10 and weighs 154lbs but she can’t find a swimsuit that compliments her figure. So she started designing her own and is in talks to sign a deal. She loves her curves and doesn’t want to lose weight.

“She wanted to create something other women can wear too. The plan is to start with swimwear and move into underwear and her own clothing line.”

Christina has previously complained about the difficulty in finding suitable swimwear for her fuller figure.

She said: “It’s really hard to find a bathing suit if you have breasts. You either get smooshed down or there’s no support.”

The 36-year-old actress also revealed her problems extend to finding dresses to wear to red carpet events.

She added: “I have to be careful about my proportions and keep it simple. What works for me is structure and something that shows my waist.

“No one will send me dresses. Designers loan size 2 or 4 samples to actresses, but I’m not that size.

“It’s like I’m a freak because I’m curvy and I can’t squeeze into those things. I’ve had some problems with that.”

Gemma Arterton says it’s hard to find clothes that suit her curvy figure

By Andrea Petrou on July 7th, 2011

Gemma Arterton says it’s hard to find clothes that suit her curvy figure.

The stunning actress admits she sometimes struggles to find outfits that flatter her hourglass body and can’t just wear anything so often relies on Italian fashion house Gucci.

She said: “My shape means I can’t throw on an outfit. Gucci tends to design best for my hourglass figure.”

Gemma is also a fan of tailored jackets as they go with any outfit.

She told Britain’s Vogue magazine: “I wear my tailored jackets to death – Armani, Givenchy and Margiela.”

As well as wearing certain clothes, Gemma also sticks to the same perfume and make-up.

She said: “I do love a red lip – Nars Jungle Red is my favourite.

“My scents always have hints of Jasmine. Right now, it’s Balenciaga Paris – it’s floral, light and musky.”

Gemma has previously admitted she likes to keep her style simple.

She said: “For me it’s kind of simple really. I don’t really go for anything too embellished or fancy or frilly or girly and it has to be easy because I haven’t got time for anything that’s too difficult!

“I just like putting on a pair jeans and jacket and going, although I do like heels – I’ve got a passion for shoes, but I always end up wearing the one same pair of shoes. But it works with my lifestyle because I’m always running around so it doesn’t work for me to wear tight skirts and corsets, or whatever it is! Jeans are definitely the way forward.”

Style spotlight: Christina Hendricks

By Andrea Petrou on March 30th, 2011

As we told you earlier on today, Mad Men will be making a come back next year.

However, we’re really disappointed to learn that curvy icon Christina Hendricks will not be returning to the show. As a result we thought it only right that we dedicated a post to her amazing style, which has made women all around the globe wish they had curves, and given those lucky enough to have them, the confidence to flaunt them.

Back in August the star made fashion waves when she wore a gorgeous lilac Zac Posen frock for the The Emmys, an usual change to her trademark black. However, just because she favours the classic colour it doesn’t mean her styles are safe.

Like her character, Christina embraces the looks of the 50s and 60s with tea length hems, lace and puffy numbers. Even when she’s dressing down there are hints of this era either through statement accessories or embellishments. Don’t disappear from our screens Christina, we need curvy inspiration.

Sienna Miller’s fashion line Twenty8Twelve is made for “different” body types

By Andrea Petrou on March 16th, 2011

Sienna Miller’s fashion line Twenty8Twelve is made for “different” body types.

The brand – which she creates with her designer sister Savannah Miller – is now in its 11th season, and the British beauty confesses she has learned a lot since its inception.

She said: “When we started this brand I had never done a complete collection. We have learned about creating diversity in the range to suit different ages, bodies and budgets whilst still maintaining the essence of Twenty8Twelve in every piece – not an easy feat!”

Savannah also claims the fashionable garments are designed for every generation of woman, including pensioners.

She told Vogue.co.uk: “We very often have three generations of women come into the store at once and all buy. I think there really is something for everyone and age these days isn’t what it used to be.

“I like to think the Twenty8Twelve woman really understands what she wants her clothes to say about her. She uses her clothes to reflect her personality.”

The Best Way to Buy Plus Size Clothing

By Andrea Petrou on October 1st, 2010

Sponsored post by Simplybe

It was not so long ago that we ladies of a more cuddly build were very limited with our choice of plus size clothes.  Most high street stores would have a pretty minimal selection and manyitems would look hopelessly out of date!  However, since the advent of the internet, things have dramatically changed for the better…

Now that we can purchase our plus size clothes online, everything is so much easier.  Companies such as Simplybe give us a fantastic choice of plus size clothes and every one of their items has plenty to offer in the way of style.  But the best thing of all about buying our clothing over the Net is we can do it at a time that suits us.  This means that shopping for garments is far more relaxing and we do not have to wait around for our turn in that cramped changing room!

Internet-based trading is now very big business indeed and many plus size women are choosing to order their clothes online; and this is no great surprise.  Well-respected companies likeSimplybe, provide their customers with plenty of measurements, so ordering something that just doesn’t fit is extremely unlikely.  But even if we do make a mistake when we are ordering, then it is simply a case of exchanging it for a different size.  We larger girls have never had it so good!

Gallery: a bombshell wardbrobe for the curvier lady

By emilyborrett on July 7th, 2010

The other day I was flicking through magazines when I read a feature about the gorgeous plus-size model Crystal Renn (well known for appearing on Mark Fast’s catwalk shows last year). And she is gorgeous. When I compared her to the legions of tiny, waif-like models in all of the ad campaigns in the magazines that I read, she exuded sex appeal in a way that they didn’t.

Don’t think that I’m hating on all of you skinny twiglets out there, because I’m not; people often seem confuse being pro-curves and pro-health as an excuse to bully skinny girls. I think that women are beautiful whether they’re seven stone or fifteen stone. Each body shape has its assets, and while clothes hang off thin girls in a way I find beautiful, clothes cling to curvy girls, and that’s sexy. As a typical British size 10-12 girl, whose weight has fluctuated over the years, I’ve got big hips and a (very) generous bum. I’ve always felt disheartened by the sheer tininess of the girls that we see every day on billboards and advertisments. But the growing use of plus-size models in fashion is a glimmer of hope for the curvy girl – it shows that beauty ideals are changing again.

Consider the curvy starlets of yesterday such as Marilyn Monroe and Brigitte Bardot. Their beauty is still as widely celebrated and recognised as it was fifty years ago; they’re still pin-ups (ask any man, he’ll confirm this). They were never ashamed of their bodies or covered themselves up in dark, baggy clothes – like Crystal Renn, they showed off their womanly figures and looked all the more beautiful for it.

Here’s a gallery for you curvy girls with the best pieces to show off your best assets and feel beautiful. (Best enjoyed when savouring a piece of chocolate cake).

Beth Ditto to model another range for Evans

By Andrea Petrou on April 26th, 2010

Beth Ditto

Beth Ditto is championing plus size women everywhere, showing you don’t have to be a stick to be considered “gorgeous”. The singer has just been signed up for another season to front the campaign of plus-size clothing for Evans. .

The AW2010 range, which is being designed as we write, is said to incorporate a mix of 1980s punk and vintage styles from the 1940s alongside current trends.

Lisa Marie Peacock, head of design at Evans, said: “We’re really excited, we are working on a great concept for young women with different styles, shapes and sizes.

“We have a look a decade, taking inspiration from the world’s greatest icons. Beth’s vintage-inspired prints – from Victorian to punk – look amazing. These very special pieces are all modernised versions, to be worn in the mix-matching Ditto style.”

Macy Gray to re-launch plus size clothing range

By Andrea Petrou on March 30th, 2010

Macy grey.jpg

Plus size models and clothing have become a huge trend over the past few seasons. Curvy models have graced the catwalk (thanks Marc Jacobs), had an issue of V Magazine dedicated to them and stores have also created more plus size collections.

Macy Gray is the latest lady to jump on this season’s plus size bandwagon. According to WWD, the singer is set to relaunch her plus size line, which goes by the name of Humps, next year.

The range, which she launched in 2008, didn’t really take off when it hit the shelves but apparently Ms Gray has been “re-inspired”.

We can’t wait to see what this new bout of inspiration brings.

First looks: Crystal Renn for V Magazine

By Andrea Petrou on February 25th, 2010

Crystal V March.jpg

Cystal Renn is flying the flag for plus sized women and models everywhere.

She appeared in last month’s V magazine’s plus sized edition and earlier this week donned a bodycon dress for Mark Fast’s LFW catwalk show. And she’s still going.

The successful plus sized model, who admitted she used to suffer with anorexia due to the pressure of trying to make it as a “normal” sized model, has once again made her way to the front cover of V’s next issue hitting the shelves next month.

Posing in an Agent Provocateur bra and Dolce & Gabbana knickers, she’s the epitome of real beauty in our eyes.
