Michelle Obama believes her fashion choices are “very practical”.

The US first lady – who posed for the cover of US Vogue when her husband Barack became President – admits she always has to “love” what she wears, but must consider the physical implications of whatever outfit she is wearing.

She said: “I have to wear what I love. I have to feel good in it. My day-to-day wardrobe choices are very practical. I’m like, ‘What’s the temperature? Am I going to be sitting in the grass? Will I be playing with kids? Can I sit on the floor?’ ”

The 47-year-old philanthropist also reveals she likes to think little about her clothes once she has them on.

She said: “If I’m comfortable in what I have on, that’s second nature, and then all my attention can go on the people in the room that I’m with at the time, and I don’t have to worry whether something is riding up or whether my feet hurt. I don’t want to waste anxiety on something as limited as clothes.”

Umbrella Heaven: keeping out of British weather the pretty way

Summer is offically gone, the thick M&S tights and winter coats are coming out of the wardrobe and we’re all bracing ourselves for the wintery weather ahead: rain. In the UK, it rarely snows but it pours. Just the other day I was wailing and lamenting over my beautiful leather biker jacket that I wore over my head to keep my hair dry during a torrent and as a result it now looks (and smells) like it’s been chilling out at the bottom of a pond for the past five years. Weep.

For those of you that know, deep down, that it is very good common sense really to carry an umbrella with you everywhere you go come October, but just can’t quite bring yourself to be bothered enough to get one, you should take a look at the boutique umbrella company Umbrella Heaven. There’s a great array of umbrellas, from the ladylike, classic styles to the more cutesy, gimmicky ones: we particularly love the see-through parasol-style umbrella with the white lace trim, which is gonna be an adorable way to keep dry and groomed on your way to work or to a club. Also favourites of ours at Shiny Style were the the dragonfly-print umbrella, which is a statement in itself, and the lovely girly “Daisy” umbrella.
