Top five best dressed royals of all time

By Andrea Petrou on January 6th, 2012

Female members of the Royal family have moved on a great deal when it comes to fashion. Gone are the long dresses, smart looks and covered up legs of old and in have stepped strong independent women with style.

Hot on everyones fashion lips is of course “new princess” Kate Middleton who has wowed the style world with her mix of highstreet and designer looks, while Zara Phillips’ sporty and chic fashion also gets her a mention.

And lets not forget both the late Princess Diana and Princess Grace of Monaco.

While Princess Diana paved the way for royals to wear a more casual attire, Princess Grace – or Grace Kelly as she was previously known – channelled her Hollywood glamour in the royal spotlight.

Searching that little bit far afield we found Queen Rania of Jordan whose mix of daytime and evening looks made her a close second in the list behind the Duchess of Cambridge.

See the gallery below for the best dressed.

Whitney Port says Princess Diana was a style icon

By Andrea Petrou on April 14th, 2011

Whitney Port’s style icon is the late Princess Diana.

The reality TV star admires the way the British royal – the former wife of Prince Charles, who died in a car crash in 1997 – took fashion risks despite having such a high-profile position.

Asked who her style icons are, she said: “I always looked up to Princess Diana. She took a lot of fashion risks at times when she was looked at so closely. I also love how Alexa Chung mixes tailored men’s clothing with dresses.”

The 26-year-old beauty also admits she finds her own image as a style icon “surreal” but loves to be inspiring people with her fashion choices.

She told LOOK magazine: “It’s surreal. I love that people all over the world can see what I’m wearing and use that as inspiration for their own look.

“I think about how I feel about my style icons and to think someone feels that way about me is crazy.”

Whitney, 26, has previously insisted she would never undergo cosmetic surgery, saying she thinks her ‘Hills’ co-star Heidi Montag – who famously underwent 10 procedures in one day – went to an extreme.

She said: “If you really feel like you want a little nip and tuck, that’s your prerogative but that’s not something I’d ever want to get into – especially to the level Heidi did. I think at our age it’s a little bit much.”

Kate Middleton has had Princess Diana’s engagement ring resized to stop it from falling off.

By Andrea Petrou on April 13th, 2011

Kate Middleton has had Princess Diana’s engagement ring resized to stop it from falling off.

The brunette beauty is set to marry Prince William on April 29 and while she was thrilled when he presented her with his late mother’s band when he popped the question last year, Kate decided to make the alteration because she was terrified it would fall off during the ceremony.

A source said: “The band was turning. Kate absolutely adores it and didn’t want to cause a fuss.

“A bride’s worst nightmare is looking down and seeing her ring has fallen off. One can only imagine how this is magnified when you are marrying the future King of England.”

Kate has now asked Crown jewellers G Collins and Sons to attach two tiny platinum beats to the inside of the ring to make it a size I, one step up from Kate’s size H finger, to make it comfortable.

The £32 million ring was given to William by Kate after the pair got engaged in Kenya last October so that his mother Diana – who was killed in a Paris car crash in 1997 – would be part of their big day.

Kate and William will marry at London’s Westminster Abbey in front of 1,200 guests including David Beckham and his wife Victoria and Sir Elton John and his husband David Furnish.

Prince William and Kate Middleton will be taken to their wedding reception in a horse drawn carriage.

By Andrea Petrou on March 22nd, 2011

Britain’s Prince William and Kate Middleton will be taken to their wedding reception in a horse drawn carriage.

The 1902 State Landau coach – which was also used by William’s parents Prince Charles and Princess Diana at their 1981 wedding – will take the bride and groom from Westminster Abbey to Buckingham Palace, where their wedding celebrations will continue on April 29.

There will be five horse-drawn carriages in the Carriage Procession, with the second and third carriages taking the Best Man- William’s brother, Harry – the Maid of Honour, Kate’s sister Pippa and her bridesmaids.

The fourth carriage will carry William’s grandparents Queen Elizabeth and The Duke of Edinburgh, while the fifth will take William’s father, the Prince of Wales and his wife the Duchess of York.

Speaking of plans for the wedding day, head coachman Mark Hargreaves told the Daily Telegraph: “With the crowd and the noise, the horses are going to be on their toes. “You’re too busy thinking about ‘What am I going to do next?’ to enjoy it. You get the butterflies before you get on board and while you’re getting changed.

“But once you get on you’re tuned in to your job, you don’t really enjoy it until you get back and everything’s gone well and you can sit back and relax.”

However if there is heavy rain on the day, a glass coach will instead be employed.

It has also been revealed that Kate will controversially be taken to her wedding in the same car Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales, and his wife were travelling in when it was attacked during student protests last year.

Prince William will be taken to the wedding in a separate state vehicle.

Who will design Kate’s dress? See the list of hotly-tipped designers here

Following on from yesterday’s drooling over Kate Middleton’s stunning engagement ring, we’ve been thinking about the royal wedding dress – who can forget the dress, designed by the Emanuels,  that Princess Di wore for her wedding? The puffs, the frills? The 1980s were a terrible time to let a pair of fashion designers get carried away with the most important wedding dress design of the decade. But we’ve moved on, fashion is infinitely better today and there’s a whole wealth of designers that may be stepping up to design Kate Middleton’s gown for her wedding next year. But who are they?

There’s a reckoning that couture veteran Bruce Oldfield could be in the running – with a portfolio of stunning gowns and a whole array of celebrity fans such as Jerry Hall and Princess Diana herself, perhaps our future Princess will decide to stick with traditional British grandeur for her walk down the aisle.

We’d all like to see Miss Middleton fly the fashion flag for Britain by tying the knot in a wedding dress by Alexander McQueen, but perhaps the much-loved designer’s bridalwear is a little too “out there” for the occasion – still, we can all dream. Similarly, it’s no secret that Kate loves Issa and the fashion house’s feminine, draped collections, but is it too informal for the big day?

Other designers who could be perfect for the job include much-loved Erdem, Valentino, Jenny Packham, Amanda Wakeley and British favourite Alice Temperley. Have a look at the gallery above for our favourite bridalwear from some of these designers, then vote for your favourite below.

Trend Alert: Antique-style rings

By Andrea Petrou on November 25th, 2010

Kate Middleton's engagement ring; previously belonging to Princess Di herself

The impending Royal Wedding between Prince William and Kate Middleton is all everyone’s talking about at the moment – especially the ring that he proposed to her with. The ring in question is the same one that Princess Diana wore during her engagement to Prince Charles – a beautiful white-gold creation with a 12-carat sapphire inset. It really is quite something to behold, in an old Hollywood kind of way, and what with Miss Middleton swiftly becoming a British trendsetter, why not get your own piece of antique-looking jewellery? You don’t have to get engaged to wear one, either.

Classic, beautiful jewellery will always be in fashion – that’s why we’re strong advocates of the cocktail ring, a glamorous and classic way to add some sparkle to a simple outfit. Metallics and diamanté for the day, and deep tones of blue, red and purple for a vampy, festive look in the evening.  Audrey Hepburn wore them, and so will we.

Check out the gallery above for our top 5 cocktail rings.
