Umbrella Heaven: keeping out of British weather the pretty way

Fifi Umbrella in "Creme"
Summer is offically gone, the thick M&S tights and winter coats are coming out of the wardrobe and we’re all bracing ourselves for the wintery weather ahead: rain. In the UK, it rarely snows but it pours. Just the other day I was wailing and lamenting over my beautiful leather biker jacket that I wore over my head to keep my hair dry during a torrent and as a result it now looks (and smells) like it’s been chilling out at the bottom of a pond for the past five years. Weep.
For those of you that know, deep down, that it is very good common sense really to carry an umbrella with you everywhere you go come October, but just can’t quite bring yourself to be bothered enough to get one, you should take a look at the boutique umbrella company Umbrella Heaven. There’s a great array of umbrellas, from the ladylike, classic styles to the more cutesy, gimmicky ones: we particularly love the see-through parasol-style umbrella with the white lace trim, which is gonna be an adorable way to keep dry and groomed on your way to work or to a club. Also favourites of ours at Shiny Style were the the dragonfly-print umbrella, which is a statement in itself, and the lovely girly “Daisy” umbrella. Check the gallery above to see the best from the site.
AW Trend alert: Take on the trench coat
Trench coats have been hanging out silently throughout the SS2010, providing us with a welcome waterproof option during the rainy months. However, as the AW2010 season approaches they’ve come from the back of the store into the front rails in a range of colours ready to provide more shelter for the upcoming months.
The best thing about this trend is that it’s classic. It comes in every year and is always a favourite on catwalks, notably at Burberry. However, as other trends come into the spotlight, this look is altered to fit in. Therefore this year the classic trench has been given a range of different facelifts, from military to puff ball to on-trend colours such as camel.
Here’s our top five for the upcoming season.
Trend alert: Our top five Glastonbury wellies
The festival season has well and truly begun with many heading to Glastonbury over the next few days. Although the weather is predicted to stay warm, there’s always the risk of rain (well it wouldn’t be Glasto without it) so we’ve decided to put together a gallery of festival boots for those travelling up to the festival on Friday.
However, take note other festival goers because this will also come in handy throughout the summer and for other festivals.
And even if it doesn’t rain, it’s a well known fashion fact that wellies are a hot must-have for these events. Team them up with little shorts and skirts for a perfect festival look.
Patent leather trench coats from the runway to your wardrobe
The trench coat is the perfect item to take you from summer into fall. It’s lightweight enough that it doesn’t overheat, offers protection from scattered rain showers, and the new patent leather designs also double as a sleek dress or even perfect-weather coats for night. The two beautiful ones from Elie Tahari and Aquascutum (above) are a bit pricey, so try this belted slicker, third from the left, from Calvin Klein (on sale for US$196).
