Kate Middleton wears Alice Temperley at the War Horse premiere

By Andrea Petrou on January 9th, 2012

Kate Middleton showed once again why she made our top five best dressed royals list last week.

The Duchess of Cambridge looked stunning as she stepped out for the War Horse premiere in a black lace Alice Temperley fishtail dress complete with a plunging neckline.

She kept her trademark waves dry with a large clear circular umbrella and finished off her look with a small black clutch bag.

According to sources, Kate had the kleenex out from the beginning of the weepy film directed by Steven Spielberg. We hope she didn’t smudge her make up.

See the gallery below for images of Kate’s fab frock.

Spotted at the 63rd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards: Christina Hendricks, Gwyneth Paltrow and more

By emilyborrett on September 19th, 2011

Mad Men star Christina Hendricks showed off her killer curves in a classic Hollywood silver silk gown with beautiful crystal detailing

Fashion Week may be over for the Yanks, with the fun having crossed over the pond to Laaahn-dahn, but that doesn’t mean that there’s nothing going on in the States, oh no – in fact, while we were all poring over the latest Henry Holland collection on the Vogue site last night, apparently a little something called the Emmy Awards was going on..

All the long-standing Hollywood superstars were there as well as the young talent: I don’t know if Lea Michele was trying to copy Kate Winslet, who’s clearly been in the red-carpet game for a long time, or what, but the young Glee actress turned up smouldering  in a simple scarlet evening dress that was actually very similar to Kate’s Emmy dress. We hope they hit each other with their handbags later in the evening.

Another Glee star in attendance was the adorable Jayma Mays, who was definitely channelling a ballerina vibe in her long ruffled and tiered sugar-pink gown which worked perfectly with her strawberry-blonde hair and berry lips. Following suit with a romantic, feminine look was Heidi Klum with her hubby Seal, showing off a crazy post-summer tan in a statement ruffled nude cocktail dress.

Opting for a more classic Hollywood vibe (it is the Emmys, after all) was the beautiful Christina Hendricks, who, fresh from causing a stir with her impressive cleavage at the première of I Don’t Know How She Does It last week, smouldered last night in an incredible slit-skirt silver evening gown covered in crystalline embellishments for a look reminiscent of old movie stars like Jean Harlow. We love. To be honest, we’re so obsessed with the woman that we might go dye our hair red and eat a tub of Ben & Jerry’s right now.

Also taking the old Hollywood fashion path was Gwyneth Paltrow, who showed off her enviably tight abs in a floor-sweeping black beaded dress with a cutout at the midriff. Pretty much all we need to say about that is that Gwynnie looked in-cred-i-ble.

Get the look: Karen Gillan at the 2011 TV Choice Awards

By emilyborrett on September 14th, 2011

Karen Gillian looked sultry at the 2011 TV Choice Awards in a crystal-detailed nude dress with simple accessories and smoky eye makeup

Picture 1 of 6

When it comes to the British TV Choice Awards, fashion-wise it’s usually a bit of a cringey affair (there’s not much you can say about Gail from Corrie’s wrap dress from Per Una) but yesterday there was one actress there that shone through for us: Doctor Who star Karen Gillan, who plays Matt Smith’s sexy assistant in the show.

We’ve been a fan of Karen’s style for a while  because we like the way she mixes cool, tomboyish style with ultra-girly feminine twists, like yesterday where the clever girl teamed a crystal-encrusted peach shift dress with some simple, grungy jewellery, dark makeup and some mens-style patent loafers. She’s doing it Alexa Chung style, and we think she can pull it off.

We tried and tried in vain to find a replica of Karen’s dress on the high street, but we did find a very sweet nude-coloured tea dress from Topshop with the same girly, playful vibe as the actress’ and teamed it up with some uber-sparkly River Island jewellery to give the outfit the same sparkle. We’ve also found the perfect pair of patent women’s loafers too, on the Kurt Geiger site. Aren’t we good to you?

Check out the gallery above to get Karen Gillan’s TV Choice Awards look.

Oscar de la Renta loves how Sarah Jessica Parker wears his clothes

By emilyborrett on September 13th, 2011

Oscar de la Renta has revealed that he’s a huge fan of SATC star Sarah Jessica Parker and loves that she likes to wear his designs.

SJP is pretty much everyone’s style icon since playing the iconic Carrie Bradshaw for so many years, so we can imagine it’s a pretty great feeling to see her wearing your designs – and she loves Oscar de la Renta.

It’s not only SJP who’s bewitched by Oscar’s feminine, glamorous designs, as other celebrities such as Gisele Bundchen, Jessica Biel and Anne Hathaway all love the brand. But Sarah Jessica seems to have a special place in the designer’s heart.

The designer gushed to E! News: “Well, I love Sarah Jessica [Parker], because she is a friend for a long time. Sarah Jessica is like Diane [Von Furstenberg]; she is very much the spirit of New York, she is the New York girl. I love her.”

Oscar is also a big fan of fellow designer Diane Von Furstenberg, whose show he attended at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week this week.

He said: “I love Diane. We have been friends forever. I have a tremendous admiration for Diane. I came for her because she is the spirit of the 21st Century. Diane is all about beauty, all about creativity, femininity and the aura of femininity.”

What a nice man. Oscar de la Renta seems to like absolutely everyone.

Keira Knightley opted for her trademark romantic look in this gorgeous crystal lace dress at the Toronto Film Festival

With it being both the fashion season and the film festival season at the moment, it’s a pretty good time for sneaking peeks at celebs’ best red carpet and party outfits. Today we weren’t let down at all by what we found.

Keira Knightley was spotted at the Toronto International Film Festival looking absolutely amazing in a nude lace crystal dress, with a sleek dark bob and angelic make up. We think that’s an Elie Saab dress that she’s wearing, lucky girl, but we could be wrong.. This is definitely a look that really works for her – we’re glad she sticks to it. We also spotted Emily Blunt looking quite foxy in a halter-necked black jumpsuit which looked cool with her laidback wavy hair and smoky eyes.

Meanwhile as New York Fashion Week continues, we spotted the Charmed actress Rose McGowan looking extremely sultry in an amazing magenta structured cocktail dress which matched the colour of her lipstick. This is one actress we never thought would come zooming back into our style radar, but we’re often surprised.. Meanwhile, the statuesque Heidi Klum towered over Christian Siriano backstage in a clinging back dress with a sheer chiffon skirt.

The Worst Dressed In The World EVER Award goes to Kelly Osbourne, who rocked up to Fashion’s Night Out in Chicago wearing a red rubber T-shirt. I don’t think I need to say any more than that.

Spotted: Sarah Jessica Parker, Marion Cotillard and Poppy Delevigne

By emilyborrett on September 8th, 2011

SJP visited the Late Show studios in NYC wearing a bold colour-blocked outfit of scarlet and pink. What a clever girl

Picture 1 of 7

As the Film Festivals and premières continue, we’re seeing an awful lot of sweet red-carpet and party looks.

Sarah Jessica Parker is firmly back on our style radar as we spotted her in New York City outside the studios for David Letterman’s “Late Show” – and she’s succeeded in the art-of colour blocking where Cheryl Cole had previously failed, teaming a scarlet blouse with high-waisted magenta trousers. Sound horrible? Maybe, but it really works. SJP 4eva.

At the premiere for the new film Contagion, the French actress Marion Cotillard looked dazzlingly beautiful with a braided up-do, smoky eye make-up and a floor-length sheer layered black gown. A beautiful red-carpet look.

Meanwhile, in London the legendary Italian fashion house Missoni were throwing a big party for the launch of a new pop-up store – and plenty of celebrities were out to show their love for the iconic knitwear company. Poppy Delevigne worked a bohemian, rock and roll look in a sleeveless leather jacket with a floaty blouse and denim hot-pants while the supermodel Doutzen Kroes naughtily broke the Missoni dress code in a clinging black Stella McCartney dress.

The true star of the Missoni party, however, was Elizabeth  Olsen, the little sister of fashion’s favourite twins. She looked cute as a button in a Missoni-knit black shift dress with a white collar for a retro look. Is she going to overtake Ashley and Mary-Kate in the style stakes? Watch this space..

Style spotlight: Kate Bosworth

By emilyborrett on September 6th, 2011

Kate (far right) shines at the Costume Institute Gala in New York alongside Liv Tyler, Stella McCartney and Kate Hudson. We absolutely adore her peekaboo black gown

Picture 1 of 9
Picture 1 of 9

In light of Kate Bosworth’s newly-revealed rule of only wearing creations by fashion designers with good manners, we thought we’d have a look over the actress’ recent style file. One thing we can say about her is that she always looks fashion-perfect right down to the tippy-toes, whether she’s in a cool Jil Sander maxi skirt or a Lanvin evening gown for the red carpet.

What we like about Kate is that she is a girl who doesn’t shy away from colour – and she shouldn’t, with her ice-blonde 1940s hair and peachy colouring, this is one girl who was born to experiment with her look. We particularly love Kate in a cool peppermint-green Jil Sander skirt with a classic white T-shirt to contrast against hot pink lipstick, or Kate in a delicate white lace Erdem dress with splashes of vibrant, hot red.

This is one woman who was born to wear high fashion. Miss Bosworth – ShinyStyle salutes you.

Kate Bosworth only wears clothes by “nice” designers

By emilyborrett on September 6th, 2011

Not only does she look like the girl next door, but it’s obvious that Kate Bosworth was brought up with a sense of good manners as the actress has revealed she only likes to wear fashions designed by nice people.

The blonde beauty, who is often a familiar face at Fashion Week and is always impeccably dressed, spoke out about her particular process of choosing what – and who – to wear.

Kate said: “I’ve always seen fashion as embracing the individual, although yes, I understand that there are parts of the industry that aren’t so welcoming. But I look at the Proenza Schouler boys – they’re so kind and they make such brilliant designs. The Rodarte sisters, too. It may be idealistic, but I like to think that goodness rises to the top.”

And naturally, Madamoiselle Bosworth knows the fashion industry well, with a father who’s worked extensively in the Italian fashion industry, a close friendship with the fashion house Proenza Schouler and her own ecommerce site Jewelmint.

No mean fashion snobbery for this girl, then. Hear, hear! Listen up, designers – throw a hissy fit or start name-calling and this actress will never wear your designs again. You have been warned..

Spotted at the 68th Venice International Film Festival: Evan Rachel Wood, Diane Kruger and George Clooney

By emilyborrett on September 1st, 2011

Supermodel Cindy Crawford went for a scorching European look in bright scarlet

Picture 1 of 6
Picture 1 of 6

Mamma mia, the Venice International Film Festival is upon us once more, and the stars certainly pulled out all the stops for this big red-carpet event.

Top style snaps have to go to Thirteen Evan Rachel Wood for completely stealing the show in a long white shirt-gown with Giuseppe Zanotti shoes and Bulgari jewellery. Pure Italian glamour all the way – this is one girl that knows how to dress up, and dress up well. We also loved her hair. While in the past the beautiful actress has opted for long, sculptured 40s waves, for the Film Festival she went for a short, sleek crop slicked back in a masculine ‘do.

Diane Kruger refused to be outshone by Evan, however, and looked like a fairytale in a sparkle-encrusted Elie Saab gown with silver peep-toes and loose, girlish wavy hair. Diane never fails to dazzle us with her red carpet style. Another winner was the actress Marisa Tomei, whose elegant draped mustard dress earned her some serious fashion respect from us.

Representing the models of the glitterati was everyone’s favourite supermodel, Cindy Crawford, showing us that she’s still got it even if the 90s are over in a one-shouldered scarlet Roberto Cavalli evening gown and effortlessly teased hair. Meanwhile, Bianca Brandolini looked sexy in a long-sleeved leopard print gown with a ruffled hem and caramel-coloured hair.

Providing arm candy for the girls’ press pictures was the lovely Mr George Clooney, who looked all twinkly and foxy in a lovely classic tuxedo with his silvery hair slicked back. George, you don’t get older, you just get better.

Check out who we spotted at the Venice Film Festival in the gallery.

Style spotlight: Sarah Jessica Parker

By emilyborrett on September 1st, 2011

At the after party for Sex and The City 2's premiere, SJP looked sexy and seventies in a peacock-blue maxi

Picture 1 of 9
Picture 1 of 9

Many well-dressed celebrities come and go without us particularly noticing, but we do certainly have at least one true style icon for our generation: Sarah Jessica Parker (or Carrie Bradshaw if you refuse to believe the Sex and the City character isn’t actually a real person).

I don’t know about you, but the character of Carrie Bradshaw has been there for me in the good times and the bad with her oversized corsages and couture McQueen. And SJP is just as chic and stylish in real life as she is on the screen. Her trademark wavy hair, smoky eye make-up, diminutive frame and penchant for Vivienne Westwood have made her one of the red carpet’s most-loved celebs – it’s no wonder her wardrobe is so full of couture. If we were Lagerfeld we’d give her everything we’d ever designed.

We’ve noticed that the star has a bit of a thing for vintage-look maxi dresses recently. Maybe it’s her passion for Halston Heritage or just that the look is in this season, but SJP definitely has got a flair for working the high-glamour, Jerry Hall 1970s look. We’re pretty much obsessed with the outfit she rocked for Cannes this May: a purple high-necked maxi dress with a train, and a lace neckline. J’adore.

Check out the gallery for our favourite Sarah Jessica Parker looks.

Spotted at the VMAs: Zoe Saldana, Beyonce, Katy Perry and more

By emilyborrett on August 30th, 2011

Katy Perry looked pretty and girlish with her new pink 'do in a chinoise-style dress and a pastel blue parasol

Picture 1 of 8

Whether you watched the VMAs on Saturday night or not, it’s always fun to have a peep at what the stars wore to one of the USA’s biggest A-list events.

Katy Perry, who came away smiling like the cat got the cream with three awards, went through more than one outfit change but our absolute favourite quirky Katy look for the night has to be the girlish Eastern-style powder blue chinoise dress, which looked cute and cartoonish with her pink hair and a matching pastel-coloured parasol.

As we all now know, Beyonce glowed with new-baby happiness all the way down the red carpet in a sizzling one-shouldered, draped orange maxi with her hair swept to one side, vintage-style. We loved her chandelier earrings too – pure 70s Halston glamour. Meanwhile, our favourite home-grown talent Adele also rocked a look from a different decade as she went for a clinging black midi-dress with huge 60s hair and makeup. Perfect.

Katie Holmes sassed it out on the red carpet with expertly teased waves and a black lace skater dress and tan suede wedge boots, while poor old Jessie J still looked sexy and upbeat despite her crutches in a jewelled black corset-body and a pair of white jewelled Bebaroque tights.

To see all these celebs and more, check out the gallery above to see who we spotted at the VMAs.

Freida Pinto doesn’t go to flea markets for fashion bargains anymore

By emilyborrett on August 30th, 2011

Freida Pinto seems to have finally realised how famous and successful she is, because she’s admitted that she’s no longer trying to scrimp and save every penny at flea markets.

The “Slumdog Millionaire” actress may be rich enough to not buy second-hand clothes anymore, but she’s still amazed that she can employ stylists to dress her now. Freida said: “I have access to certain things that I wouldn’t ever have before. I used to go down to the flea markets and put these things together and take them to my tailor to be fixed up. And now there are other people who do that for me!”

While the down-to-earth star has been previously used to hunting in flea markets, she’s also confessed that she loves getting ready for red carpet events and getting to wear couture gowns. Freida explained her love of the red carpet: “I look at it as fun. I think it’s terrifying if you’re trying to do something you’re not comfortable with, or trying to channel something you’re not. But if you’re just being true to the kind of clothes you wear, it’s fun.”

Style spotlight: Emma Stone

By emilyborrett on August 25th, 2011

The ageing comedian Jim Carrey revealed that he, like us, has a smacking great big crush on Emma Stone. He said about the Spiderman actress: “Emma, I think you’re all the way beautiful. Not just pretty, but smart and kind-hearted. And if I were a lot younger, I would marry you. We would have chubby little freckle-faced kids. We’d laugh all day long, go camping and play Yahtzee. Tell ghost stories by the fire.” This is quite an adorable mental image, which Jim can totally keep all for himself – because we’re primarily in love with the starlet’s red-carpet wardrobe.

We love Emma because she is such a fashion chameleon. Going through her paparazzi/red carpet photos we were momentarily confused when we saw a photograph of her with a cool, ice-blonde crop instead of her now-trademark flaming red locks, because she looked like a completely different woman. Emma’s got the wonderful ability to adapt her look and chop and change her style to be whoever she wants to be.

We did like Emma when she was a blonde but we have to say we absolutely ADORE her red waves – her hair looks so perfect against her beautiful and completely clear (damn her!) pale skin and kind of reminds us of Old Hollywood. She’s got a perfect, classic sense of style and always looks impeccable at any event. Check out the gallery for our favourite Emma Stone fashion moments in the gallery above.
