Tabitha Somerset Webb wants Duchess Catherine to wear one of her Project D designs.

By Andrea Petrou on December 14th, 2011

Tabitha Somerset Webb wants Duchess Catherine to wear one of her Project D designs.

The 36-year-old fashion designer – who co-created the clothing line alongside Dannii Minogue – is thrilled that Pippa Middleton has worn their pieces on two occasions this year, and is hopeful her older sister will soon follow suit.

She said: “Pippa has been amazing. It’s so flattering that she has chosen to wear our dresses. She looks gorgeous in them. She’s very much a Project D girl – elegant, classy and sexy.

“Now it would be great if her sister Kate wore one of our designs, too.”

However, Pippa – who wore Project D gowns to a friend’s wedding in September and to a recent charity event – is not the only royal fan of the line, as Tabitha explained Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie have also worn her creations to public functions.

Tabitha added in an interview with HELLO! magazine: “Princess Beatrice wore our red Crystal dress to Prince Philip’s 90th birthday party and Eugenie ordered our floral Lily gown for another private event.”

Kate Middleton helps boost business for Sophie Cranston after being spotted wearing the designer’s dresses

By Andrea Petrou on October 31st, 2011

Sophie Cranston says Duchess Catherine has helped her business “enormously”.

The brunette beauty was seen wearing one of Sophie’s Libelula frock coats in January and the designer says she’s very grateful of the publicity she has given the label.

She told vogue.co.uk: “Kate has helped the business enormously. Through all the press we got, people abroad began to take notice. When she first wore it, our website crashed – it went up 2,000 per cent – and we actually has to get a better servers to make sure we could cope with number of enquiries. Since then, business has grown steadily – it’s impossible to maintain that level of interest, but it’s been quite constant. She has had an amazing effect on the label. Kate looks pretty good in anything. She is fairly representative of the people that buy the brand, but we hope Libelula appeals to a wider demographic. She’s a pretty nice person to have wearing your designs though.”

Sophie also revealed how Libelula’s clothes suit most women because of the way the clothes are made.

She said: “This winter a black lace and wool dress I created just flew off the shelves. I think it was to do with the flattering shape – something I always focus on – and the contrasting fabrics. I always think about boobs and bottoms; clothes should be flattering. A lot of shapes are initially cut in a size 14-16, so that everyone looks gorgeous in them.”

Joan Rivers loves Kate Middleton’s fashion sense

By Andrea Petrou on October 24th, 2011

Joan Rivers and her daughter Melissa are huge fans of the Duchess of Cambridge’s fashion sense.

The ‘Fashion Police’ star and her only daughter – who are known for their scathing comments on celebrity fashion faux pas – are in agreement that Catherine, wife of Prince William, is an impeccable dresser.

Joan said: “She’s fabulous, she doesn’t put a foot wrong.”

Melissa added: “Never mind what the fashionistas say, she’s like one of your friends who dresses beautifully.”

However, not everyone agrees with them. Nordstrom fashion director Gregg Andrews recently claimed Catherine isn’t a trendsetter and said she wouldn’t stand out if she were not married to royalty.

He said: “She is stylish, but she’s not setting trends, she’s following trends.

“If you take Kate out of the royal family, put her on a street in New York, you wouldn’t look at her twice. She’s a beautiful woman, but she blends into a crowd.”

Gregg’s views were echoed by Elle fashion news director Anne Slowey, who claimed Catherine’s look was only admired because of who she’s married to.

She said: “Is she a style icon of the likes of a Kate Moss? Absolutely not. Is she in the public eye? Are people going to become obsessed with everything she wears regardless of what it is? Yes.”

Ken Downing, fashion director of high-end department store Neiman Marcus, also doubts whether Catherine, 29, will ever be a leading style icon.

He said: “Is she iconic at the moment? Time will tell. She’s certainly influential. In the position that she’s in you can’t be simply stunning as she is and not have influence.”

Mary Portas agrees with ShinyStyle and says Duchess Catherine does not have a particularly good sense of fashion

By Andrea Petrou on October 12th, 2011

Duchess Catherine has had her sense of style slammed by shopping expert Mary Portas.

The flame-haired television personality – who is renowned for her strong sense of style, punctuated with covered arms, big shoulders and statement colours – has echoed what we at ShinyStyle were saying months ago – she does not think Catherine, who was recently asked to pose for the cover of US Vogue, has a particularly good sense of fashion.

She said: “I think Duchess Catherine has done an incredible job globally, but I do not know how you can say she is a fashion icon. I just don’t get that.”

When asked what does make an icon, she responded: “A unique sense of style. End of. Don’t you think?”

However, the British royal is not the only star to come under Mary’s fire – she also thinks Cheryl Cole’s time in Los Angeles, where she was a judge on the US version of ‘X Factor’ for four auditions, was misaligned.

She said to Heat magazine: “That was really wrong wasn’t it? There was that massive hair and then the tiny body. It was really just a wrong move.”

Kate Middleton turns down opportunity to appear in US Vogue

By Andrea Petrou on October 10th, 2011

Britain’s Duchess Catherine has reportedly turned down an opportunity to appear on the front cover of US Vogue.

The 29-year-old royal – who married Prince William in April – was asked by the prestigious magazine’s editor Anna Wintour to appear in a spread but has declined the offer because she doesn’t want to be seen as a fashion icon.

A source told E! News: “Both William and Kate feel it would be wrong for Kate to promote herself as a fashion or style icon. That’s not what they are about and they take their royal duties far too seriously for that.”

Catherine was also said to be wary of upsetting William’s grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, as she knows the monarch wouldn’t have been too keen on the idea.

The source continued: “Kate is keenly conscious that while her new grandmother-in-law may not chide her for appearing on a Vogue cover. But she would definitely not be amused, and Her Majesty is a real genius at making people squirm with simply a look or a ‘tut, tut.’

“To be brutally honest, a request to sit down with The Times, the BBC or one of the major American networks to discuss the monarchy in general is one thing. For Kate to be photographed draped in the latest creation of a couture house to, knowingly or otherwise, self-promote her status as some sort of fashion horse is something quite different.”

Tom Ford slams Princess Beatrice’s outfit for the royal wedding

By emilyborrett on September 5th, 2011

The fashion designer Tom Ford has criticised Princess Beatrice’s now infamous hat that she wore to the Royal Wedding.

It’s always scary to have your wardrobe criticised, but having Tom Ford pass comment is scary – this is, after all, the man who’s fashion know-how intimidates even Victoria Beckham.

We all remember Princess Bea’s outfit for the royal wedding as it was hard to miss – the red-headed royal was largely slated for turning up to the nuptials in an eye-grabbing couture Phillip Treacy hat. Tom Ford commented on Bea’s headwear choice: “I’ll probably get in trouble for saying this, but at the royal wedding, one of the princesses wore a now-very-famous (or infamous), Philip Treacy hat – that hat wore her. Now, Isabella Blow, a woman those of us in fashion knew well – had she worn the same hat, it would have looked great. She would have worn the hat. She knew what she was about, what she wanted to express in fashion.”

Take note, Princesses – you have been warned by the main man in fashion himself. Leave the scary couture to the Isabella Blows of the fashion world!

Sarah Jessica Parker’s style icon is Kate Middleton

By emilyborrett on September 1st, 2011

Sarah Jessica Parker has revealed that one of her top style icons is our very own Kate Middleton, now the Duchess of Cambridge. When SJP was asked to name her favourite style icons, the I Don’t Know How She Does It actress replied: “So many. Ingrid Bergman & the way Kate Moss dresses & the Duchess of Cambridge. It seems that K-Middy is having just as much an effect on the United States’ wardrobes as she is on ours!

As we all know, Sarah Jessica is a total style icon in her own right after playing Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City. When asked what her favourite Carrie fashion moment was, she replied: “The tutu in Paris. It was a real tutu & I’m sure it was from the Royal Ballet.”

The actress is always a familiar face at London Fashion Week because, as we all know, she loves the British fashion industry for its quirks. However, perhaps she’ll stay at home this year as she thinks that the American fashion industry is getting more daring. She said: “British fashion is more risky but we have some emerging American designers that seem inspired in that direction.”

And will SJP, freshly inspired by Kate Middleton, ever venture into fashion design again? “Definitely if I can figure out what it is I want to do.” Watch this space.

Kelly Osbourne says she would refuse to recycle outfits if she were Kate Middleton

By emilyborrett on August 8th, 2011

Kelly Osbourne confessed on the “Tonight Show” that if she were the future Queen of England, like Kate Middleton is, she would refuse to recycle her outfits.

The gobby “Fashion Police” presenter spoke out about Kate Middleton’s recent habit of wearing the same clothes in public more than once, which she’s been applauded for by the media.

Kelly said on the “Tonight Show”, “Well, I’m sorry, but if I had that job, I would only wear it once. If I am going to be the future bloody Queen of England, I’m going to wear that dress once, because I’m giving up the rest of my life, all of my privacy, at least I can get a new dress every day.”

It’s a nice dream but probably an expensive one, Kelly. What do you think of K-Middy’s recycled wardrobe – yay or nay? Let us know.

Kim Kardashian’s wedding will be shown on TV in two parts

By emilyborrett on August 4th, 2011

Anyone who’s got Royal Wedding blues (it’s all over! waaaaah!) should cheer up, because Kim Kardashian’s kindly televising her ridiculously OTT wedding to fiance Kris Humphries.

It may not be in Westminster Abbey, and there may not be an angelic choir singing “Jerusalem”, but I’ll bet we’ll see at least one chihuahua in a dress. The nuptials will be shown over two nights as part of the television special “Kim’s Fairytale Wedding: A Kardashian Event”.

We reckon there’ll be better guests than the Royal Wedding too. Instead of various Earls we haven’t heard of, Justin Bieber probably be there. A source said on the Hollywood happening: “There’s no location yet, but Kim is already invited at least 1,000, and the list is getting longer. The original idea was to have a wedding on each coast, but she now wants one huge wedding. She’ll probably reveal where the ceremony is. She hopes to make a huge entrance. She’s having guests sign confidentiality agreements.”

The ceremony is taking place later this month and I can’t wait..

Kate Middleton is named as one of the world’s best dressed women

By emilyborrett on August 4th, 2011

It seems that it’s not just us that’s got terrible K-Middy fever, as she’s just been voted as one of the world’s best dressed women in the world in Vanity Fair.

Kate was hailed as the third most well-dressed women in the world, having been pipped to the post by Carla Bruni in first place and Sheikha Moza Bint Nasser of Qatar in second. Still Kate, third place ain’t bad. Also on the list were Carey Mulligan, Tilda Swinton and Princess Charlene of Monaco.

Vanity Fair applauded the young Duchess for her recent habit of “recycling” clothes (i.e. wearing them more than once, ever). Apparently she’s worn her green Diane Von Fustenberg in public at least three times now! Three! Having scorned at the rich and beautiful’s idea of recycling, I have to admit that if I was the Duchess of Cambridge I’d probably never wear the same thing twice – so many fashion possibilities.

Congratulations, oh shiny-haired one – you’re officially the third best-dressed woman in the world.

Britain’s Zara Phillips has married Mike Tindall. Queen Elizabeth’s eldest granddaughter tied the knot with the England rugby player at Canongate Kirk in Edinburgh, Scotland, in a private ceremony this afternoon (30.07.11).

The 30-year-old blonde – daughter of Princess Anne and her ex-husband Mark Phillips – looked stunning in a beautiful ivory gown by Stewart Parvin as she arrived at the venue with her father.

Following the service, Zara and Mike – who have been dating for around seven years – posed for photographers outside the church, kissing to the cheers from the excited well-wishers, who had lined the streets in order to catch a glimpse of them.

Guests at the wedding included the queen and Prince Philip, Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry and fellow royal newlyweds, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, who married in April.

Singer Una Healey, TV presenter Kirsty Gallacher and actress Katherine Kelly were also in attendance.

The reception will take place at nearby Palace of Holyroodhouse.

Last night (29.07.11), the couple hosted a pre-wedding party on the royal yacht Britannia, which is moored in Leith and had previously attended a rehearsal for the ceremony at the kirk with the bride’s parents.
