Get the look: Lady Gaga’s new ladylike style

By emilyborrett on August 2nd, 2011

Lady Gaga was spotted in NYC rocking the new season's 40s-inspired ladylike trend in a houndstooth skirt suit with matching accessories - we've never seen the singer look so demure

We were happily surprised to see this photograph of Madam Gaga’s take on Autumn/Winter’s 1940s-inspired ladylike trend (pictured above) – she’s been seen spotted out in NYC in a head-to-toe houndstooth Salvatore Ferragamo ensemble nipped in at the waist for a vintage feel. When the first lady of quirky fashion is all over a trend, you know it’s time to get in on the action.

Naturally we wouldn’t recommend you tackle the trend in quite the same way as Gaga, who unsurprisingly added a few of her bizarre fashion twists to make the look her own. She may be able to wear houndstooth sunglasses, but thats because she has minders to walk her everywhere – attempt that particular accessory and you will walk into a wall. The rest of it though is a solid look, and we’ve compiled a gallery of our favourite affordable ladylike pieces on the high street.

This trend is all  about the feminine silhouette and opulent fabrics such as silk and brocade – perfect for girls who have a good waist. Belted tweed blazers, silk pussybow blouses and ladylike costume jewellery are an easy way to wear the trend and could be worn either in the day or the night.

What do you think of Gaga’s new look? Do you love it, or prefer her more risqué style? Let us know in the comments below, and check out the gallery above so that you can steal her style.

Spotted: Rosie Huntingdon-Whitely, Julia Roberts, Freida Pinto and Alexa Chung

Fearne Cotton looked cool and laid-back yesterday leaving work in a simple floral shirt teamed with tight black denim and killer leather heels

Yesterday was a good day for the paparazzi, as it seems there were celebrities out in full force all over the place for swanky bashes. Well, besides Fearne Cotton – as always we spotted her on her way out of the Radio One studios where she works, looking cute and dressed-down in a slightly wrinkled floral shirt teamed up with some Mad Max-style wedges and jeans so tight they could have been sprayed on. We love Fearne for keeping it real. I know if I was aware of paparazzi photographing me all the time, I’d probably wear a ballgown every where.

Further across London, in leafy Hyde Park, a party thrown by the Serpentine Gallery had guests in attendance such as Alexa Chung, Julia Restoin-Roitfeld and Grayson (who we have to say, looked very pretty indeed in his party dress). Alexa Chung was on full fashion form, wearing a beautifully cut and tailored navy dress with one of her trademark puritanical white collars, with a pair of the highest black leather heels we have ever seen. Seriously, we are in awe of Alexa’s heels – full props to her for wearing those anywhere. Meanwhile, Julia Restoin-Roitfeld came to the party looking quite sexy and French in a sheer black blouse teamed with a curve-hugging black skirt. Who knows if we’ll ever see her wearing any colour, but moody dressing does suit her.

Diane Kruger looked very ooh-la-la on the arm of her current squeeze, Joshua Jackson, at a party thrown by Jaeger in Paris wearing a striking lace and brocade midnight-blue dress with a raspberry-pink clutch and simple accessories. Diane Kruger will always and forever be one of our favourite celebrity dressers.

Across the pond in New York, the scarily, horribly gorgeous Rosie Huntingdon-Whitely made an appearance at the première for Transformers: Dark Side of The Moon, in which she has a starring role. The supermodel looked statuesque in a floor-sweeping scarlet gown to  match her sizeable pout. Anyone who wishes Megan Fox was still the pin-up of the Transformers franchise is probably saying “Megan who?” after yesterday. We also saw Julia Roberts outside filming for an appearance on the David Letterman show looking AMAZING in a pair of aviator sunglasses worn with a delicate white shift dress and a baggy masculine blazer that worked the hard/soft angle perfectly.

And finally, some of the silver screen’s fashion darlings were in attendance yesterday at an intimate showing of Salvatore Ferragamo’s 2012 Cruise Collection. Pretty young actress Emma Roberts (niece of Julia! I wonder if they hung out in NYC yesterday), who is rapidly becoming a hot commodity amongst stylists and designers, looked pretty with soft wavy hair and a sumptuous purple velvet wrap dress. Freida Pinto, “Slumdog Millionaire” star and a renowned fashion lover, was there looking chic in a knotted graphic-print silk halterneck with a neat white skirt and tan accessories. We love that she’s giving nods to the 70s trend right now.

Our final best-dressed celeb spotted yesterday was sultry mama Eva Mendes, who was also at the Ferragamo show in an elegant wrap dress that combined both cream and camel tones. She looked like a movie star from the 1970s.

Looks like Yves Saint Laurent is simply collecting supermodels for its ad campaigns. After their fall ads featured Naomi Campbell, they’re moving on to Claudia Schiffer for spring.

Schiffer has told WWD that she has shot campaigns for YSL, Dolce & Gabbana and Salvatore Ferragamo for the spring.

Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin photographed YSL’s spring campaign in Los Angeles last month.

nicolekidman_voguedressbergdorfs.jpgThe dress worn by Nicole Kidman on the cover of the latest issue of Vogue (you know, the one where looks decidedly bump-free) has gone on sale at Bergdorf’s.

Created by costume designer, Catherine Martin, the dress, which is also worn by Kidman in her forthcoming flick Australia, is currently on display in the department store’s window, just a week after appearing in the style bible.

Marc chooses models – Stella Tennant and Kirsten Owen – for fall 2008 campaign

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on June 9th, 2008

Stella Tennant Kirsten Owen.jpg

Looks like the Marc Jacobs ad campaign star will be one role that’s not recurring for Victoria Beckham (unlike her Ugly Betty gig, which she will reprise).

Marc has chosen to fuel the comeback of the 90s supermodel by hiring Stella Tennant and Kirsten Owen for his fall 2008 advertising.

Christopher Kane named Designer of the Year at Scottish Fashion Awards

By Andrea Thatcher on September 11th, 2007

The second-annual Scottish Fashion Awards were held this weekend at Stirling Castle. Judges for the awards included British Vogue’s fashion director Kate Phelan and Daily Telegraph’s Hilary Alexander. The biggest winner of the night was Christopher Kane, who went home with the Designer of the Year honor. The Scotland-bred designer is only twenty-five and already making a huge splash in the fashion world. He revealed his award-winning graduate collection from Central Saint Martin only six months before pulling off a fabulous collection for London’s spring fashion week last year. Inspired by Versace (Donatella is a consultant) and Alaïa in the ’90s, body-clinging dresses were the item of choice in an array of patterns—lace, mesh—and bright color combinations—red and pink, violet and green.
