ShinyStyle review: Havaianas wellies launch at Selfridges

By Andrea Petrou on April 18th, 2011
Sponsored post

The rainy weather may be clearing and the summer on its way but that doesn’t mean we have to say goodbye to those wellies. In fact, with festival season just around the corner, these rubber boots are once again making a comeback.

Last Thursday we were given an introduction to the festival season, minus the mud, rain, and erm camping, when Havaianas took over the Ultra Lounge at Selfridges turning it into a festival fantasy land complete with hay bales, grass and of course the token celebrity, to celebrate the launch of their wellies.

That’s right our fave party poppets including Jameela Jamil and Daisy Lowe were out in force. Jameela Jamil looked hot in an orange halter top, while Daisy Lowe, who was also DJing at the event, went for a silky maxi dress. Laura Whitmore also looked hot in an assemble of black. When Daisy wasn’t on the decks we were treated to music from artist Jamie Woon as well as dance artists ‘Brazilian Fantasy’ who took to the floor and created dance frenzy toward the end of the night.

Add to that the free flow of caipirinha’s and other Brazilian cocktails by Sagatiba and foods including Tacos, Fajitas, Mini Fish n’Chips & Burgers and the company gave us that dream festival feel. Take note festival organisers we want this kind of treatment all summer.

However, the real stars of the night were of course the brand new wellies, which we fell in love with. Bright pinks with grey trimmings, purples, greys with pink trimmings and of course on-trend khaki green were all colours on display. Those feeling a little bit more daring also have a choice of a summer beach theme and for £45 a pair they really are a wardrobe must have.

See the gallery below for all the celebrity action and for some peeks of the boots.

Selfridges launches Vivienne Westwood shoe exhibition

By admin on August 24th, 2010

I’m a massive fan of Vivienne Westwood’s shoes and recently added a pair from her collaboration with rubber sole label Melissa, to my growing collection. So you can imagine how excited I was when I heard that Selfridges is opening an exhibition of her shoes this week.

And it seems like it’s going to include everything from the new shoes I’ve got to the notorious towering platforms that landed Naomi Campbell on the floor of the catwalk.

‘Vivienne Westwood Shoes: An Exhibition 1973-2010′ is set to open in the London department store’s Ultra Lounge on Thursday and gives shoe lovers the opportunity to get up and close to 200 pairs of shoes. It may sound like shoe torture, being that you can’t try them on or take them home but I definitely recommend you get yourself over there. I’ll be the one standing and drawling on the sidelines.

RÜTME: Up-and-coming Danish fashion set to hit the UK

By emilyborrett on July 12th, 2010

Eye-popping fashion from the Danish designers

Those who love to have fun with their clothes will be happy to hear that the Danish fashion label RÜTME has arrived in the UK.

There’s a clear 1990s street-style inspiration behind the collection shown in the geometric prints, slouchy cuts and eye-popping colour. A bit like the outfits that Will Smith wore in The Fresh Prince (his clothes were the coolest) except updated, a bit like the “nu rave” craze we all went through in 2006 (remember the Klaxons?) except not lame. By using such bold print and colour, RÜTME could have so easily come off as trying a bit too hard, a bit too “Look at me! Look at me!”, but the casual practicality of its’ sportswear shapes make the collection effortless, not remotely contrived or try-hard at all. There’s a versatility to the clothes; you could wear them to the shop to buy milk, or wear them to a party – the founders of RÜTME, Rikke Charlotte Larsen and Nicole Rindsig, describe their line as a brand for “whole generation on the go”, and we see what they mean.

Best of all is that the brand will be retailed at high-street prices so us girls won’t have to save too much to get in on the action. There’s no online stockist for the line as of yet, but it is being sold in Selfridges already – get down there before everyone else cottons on. To find out more about RÜTME, visit their lookbook here.

Selfridges launches eco-bag range

By Andrea Petrou on June 2nd, 2010

Bottlebags.jpg

Yesterday we bought you the news that Debenhams had launched a range of designer eco friendly bags for life, and now it seems Selfridges is doing the same.
The high end department store has announced a range of bags in aid of UK charity Bottletop, which raises money to help fight poverty in the developing world.

The bags, which are the creation of Cameron Saul (whose father Roger Saul founded Mulberry), are made from recycled bottle tops salvaged from waste. These are then spun into high-fashion handbags by local communities.

‘I wanted Bottletop to be a cool brand. We’d sell sexy, high-quality products with a feel good factor, not things people brought because they felt they had to’, said Saul.

The new limited collection comes in five styles; the ‘Luciana’ clutch, the ‘Claudio’ luggage bag, the ‘Paris’ shoulder bag, the ‘Comprido’ clutch, and the ‘Bellani’ shoulder bag, each with the coveted blue ‘Bottletop’ logo.

You can get your hands on them at Selfridges now.

Fashion Council moves to help ethical fashion brands

By Andrea Petrou on May 5th, 2010

Eco undies.JPG

In our last post we told you about a fantastic new eco-fashion brand that had popped up in Selfridges.

However, although many of you are more than happy to do something that helps the environment we know that these items are often far more expensive than your average highstreet brand.

We can only put this down to the fact that sourcing the materials and making them in an ethical fashion is more expensive, and requires lots of time and effort.

However, we’re not sure if this reasoning quite works with our credit cards. Thankfully we’re not alone in our thinking. Harold Tillman, head of the British Fashion Council, has realised that many of us are shying away from ethical fashion due to the price so he’s started a campaign to help us out.

He has gained the support of Vivienne Westwood, Monsoon and the London College of Fashion‘s Centre for Sustainable Fashion, and is pushing the Government to give brands that push eco-fashion tax breaks, which could help them reduce their prices.

“If UK citizens can get tax breaks on more energy efficient cars and other sustainable products, why can’t they wear their values with pride and get tax breaks on ethical fashion?”

Would you buy more ethical fashion if it was cheaper? Let us know by leaving your comments below.

Dannii shows off her pregnancy bump at the launch of her fashion line

By Andrea Petrou on April 28th, 2010

Dannii pregnant 1.jpg

Dannii Minogue has become one of our favourite style icons over the past few months.

She’s become the face of M&S starring alongside the likes of Twiggy, showed off her fashion flair on the X-Factor last year and also designed a range of clothing, Project D with her friend and designer Tabitha Somerset-Web.

Therefore we were hardly surprised when she rocked up at the launch of this fashion line at Selfridges looking stunning and showing off her gorgeous baby bump in a sparkling midnight blue asymmetric dress, which of course was from the new collection.

‘This one’s stretched sequin thankfully, so it goes over the bump!’ she said.

‘Being pregnant has completely opened my mind to having to try really different shapes and things I haven’t worn before. You’ve got to dress cleverly around it, but I’ve managed to get into my dresses without any alterations,’ she said.

And she’s continued to show her pregnancy style. The star was also spotted looking laid back and chic wearing a black dress and on-trend straw hat on a trip to Heathrow airport.

Will Dannii’s pregnancy style lead her to design a range of maternity clothing? Watch this space.

How fashion and food became friends again

By laurenbravo on April 24th, 2010

117602.jpgFashion and food. Fashion… and food. It’s one of the most notoriously tempestuous relationships in history, worse than Cathy and Heathcliffe, Tristan and Isolde, Kerry Katona and Mark Whatchamacallit. Both creative, both symbols of indulgence, they seem so compatible in so many ways, yet a lot of the time they just can’t seem to make it work.

But every so often, whether it’s after the conceptual equivalent of a Relate counselling session or because curves are meant to be back in, the two fall in love again. Fashion stops counting calories for a wee while, and food stops being quite so homely, puts on a new frock and looks good. We’re currently riding the wave of one of these reconciliations, in what I believe history textbooks of the future will term the ‘Great Cupcake Commotion of the Noughties’.

At some point in the last few years, cake became acceptable again. After a decade of being force-fed tofu/wheatgrass/goji/ginseng/yoga/Gwyneth Paltrow to extreme levels, the industry rebelled and gave into its cravings. Suddenly sugar, spice and all things nice were back on the menu – and more than snacks, they became accessories. When Carrie and Miranda dissected their love lives while eating cupcakes outside New York’s famous Magnolia Bakery, it sent the fashion world into a frosting-induced frenzy that we still haven’t seen the back of.

Then Heidi Klum bought Victoria Beckham a year’s supply of cupcakes for her 34th birthday back in 2008, and the sugar craze grew. Aside from the obvious question (who was eating those things in the Beckham household?), everyone was excited because it spelled the end for publicly virtuous eating. No longer were we expected to wave away the dessert menu with a bony hand – instead, indulgence was in. And not just a little indulgence, but a LOT. £1000-worth of indulgence, if you’re Ms Klum. Not that we’re complaining, of course. If touting sparkly confectionary can equal carrying the latest Mulberry, then somebody pass us that spatula.

In London, the cupcake scene has been ruled by a few main contenders. There’s the Primrose Bakery, frequented by celeb crowd of North London locals including Kate Moss and famed for their creamy vanilla frosting. Then there’s the New York-inspired Hummingbird Bakery, who have branches in Notting Hill, Kensington and Soho and a bestselling cookbook. Lily Vanilli specialises in decadent cakes topped with cherries, strawberries and nuts, Lola’s Kitchen offer adorable oreo and peanut butter variations, while Candy Cakes are vivid, iced muffins that have been bought by the likes of Madonna and Kate Moss.

macarons.jpgBut all good things come to an end, and now the cupcake craze is giving way to a new hoard of stylish treats to spend our pocket money on. The magic question remains of course – how compatible can food and fashion ever be, while we’re still expected to fit into sample sizes? But for now, let’s pretend we’ll do some stomach crunches later, and work up an appetite with 2010′s menu:

Macarons

Marie Antionette may have let the peasants eat cake, but we reckon she kept all the macarons for herself. The cupcake’s lighter, far more elegant cousin, macarons are the fash pack’s new favourite – and they’re as pretty as a picture, with colourful flavours like pistachio, rose, salted caramel and mandarin to co-ordinate with your spring florals (or just dress in black and eat them all). Parisian brands Ladurée and Pierre Hermé are the go-to macaron masters, with the former selling in Harrods and the latter having opened up a wildly successful Selfridges concession in February.

What to wear: The fanciest French fancies around, these delectable darlings deserve an outfit that befits them. Go for candy colours and frou-frou shapes – this is one time that chic doesn’t have to mean understated.

Tea and scones

Everything’s bigger in America – and in the case of cake, that also means sweeter, heavier and more loaded with dentistry-defying frosting. But now the humble English tea is fighting back, as scones and dainty sandwiches have a trendy renaissance and everyone from Victoria Beckham to Kate Moss and Madonna (them again) have been spied ‘taking tea’.

From the oh-so-elegant afternoon tea at Claridges to the quirky parlour at celeb favourite Sketch, the WI standard has had a makeover. Juri’s in Winchcombe is a Cotswolds classic, Betty’s tea rooms in Harrogate, York, Ilkley & Northallerton are Yorkshire institutions, while Brighton’s Mock Turtle café is charmingly outfitted like your Granny’s dining room, and a popular hangout for trendsters and OAPs alike. The Fashionista’s Afternoon Tea at The Berkley in London makes biscuits to look like that season’s catwalk must-haves, inspired by designs from Luella, Stella McCartney, Lanvin and Vikor and Rolf. Meanwhile, Afternoon Tease at Volupté is a burlesque extravaganza, with cabaret acts to watch as you chow down on cake and champagne – all served with gentleman’s relish, we’d imagine…

What to wear: Afternoon tea calls from some old school English elegance. Go for chintzy florals, cardigans and corsages – or anything that won’t show the jam stains.

Milkshakes 001-thumb-200x299.jpgMilkshakes

The cupcake claw may be loosening, but that hasn’t stopped another American eating trend working its way over to our shores. Fifties-style diners have made a huge comeback in the past couple of years, with their shiny décor and menus of burgers, curly fries and milkshakes reminding us all of a time when teenagers were being born, rock and roll ruled the world, and nobody knew what saturated fats did to your arteries. In London, Ed’s Easy Diner is a pre-club favourite, with branches in Soho and Picadilly complete with mini jukeboxes on the tables so you can eat to your favourite rockabilly blues. Then there’s the recent speight of retro bowling alleys, such as the Bloomsbury Bowling Lanes, which regularly hosts club nights, and the All Star Bowling Lanes, where Princess Eugenie held her 50s-themed 20th birthday last month.

What to wear: Pure ’50s Americana, with turned-up jeans, letterman jackets and be-ribboned ponytails. Watch Grease for some inspiration – but avoid the spray-on trousers if you want to tuck away that second helping of apple pie.

Stills from Tim Burton s Alice in Wonderland surreal fantasy movie

The long awaited Alice in Wonderland film will be hitting cinemas on 5 March. And the build up to it has been amazing. A range of designers including Stella McCartney and Tim Binns have designed jewellery inspired by the film as has Swarovski.

And now Selfridges has been sucked into the frenzy. The department store has teamed up with Disney to open a pop-up shop dedicated to Alice.

Five of the shop’s windows will be dedicated to the upcoming film and will include a Mad Hatter’s tea party and costumes from the film. Once you’ve been dazzelled by this you can enter the Wonderland room, where you can buy jewellery by designers as well as make-up and tea sets.

We can’t wait till this wonderful wonderland opens on 22 February.

Gallery: Inspirational plus size celebrities and models

By Andrea Petrou on December 21st, 2009

After reporting on Selfridges latest move to stop stocking plus size clothes we thought it was only right to show the retailer that we’re all not twiglets.

In the past few years a range of Hollywood celebs have shunned the size zero look and showed us that being a normal weight is perfectly acceptable.

Plus size models have also been on the covers of magazines and on the catwalk.

We’ve therefore put together a gallery of these inspirational women and we will be sending a link to Selfridges too.

Selfridges turns its back on plus size clothes

By Andrea Petrou on December 21st, 2009

Plus size.jpgJust as we thought the fashion world had woken up and accepted plus size women, it seems we’ve gone a step back.

Last week Selfridges announced it was dropping it’s plus size Marina Rinaldi range, which has sizes from 14 to 26, as according to The News of The World, it “doesn’t fit their image.”

The clothing range, founded in 1980 for ‘curvy women’, was taken out of stores two weeks ago to make space for slimmer lines meaning the largest size available on many fashion lines is now a 16 or 18 at a push.

Anita Barr, Director of Womenswear and Childrenswear at Selfridges said: ‘It’s true we no longer stock Marina Rinaldi, however Selfridges is constantly updating its brand mix.

‘This is also reflected in the sizing we offer. At present customers can find sizes up to a UK 18 in store.’

We think this is a disgraceful move by the well known retailer especially since half the women in the country are size 16 and above. We just hope other stores don’t take on the same approach. Tell us what you think about this by leaving your comments below.

Fashion find: Neosens shoes and accessories

By Andrea Petrou on December 17th, 2009

neosens-S2010-05[1][2][1].jpgWe love finding brands that aren’t really that well known in the UK (makes us feel as though we’re unwrapping a Christmas present) and Neosens has made us feel just that.

The Spanish shoe brand has a range of amazing quality shoes and accessories and has been stocked in Selfridges for a while (that explains why we hadn’t really heard about them). However, it’s just launched a website where we can now view and buy the collections.

And its made it simple for us to find exactly what we’re looking for with the ranges displayed in varying colours. Other special features include a special offers/discounts drop down menu giving customers the chance to preview, sale products.

The shoes may be a little different to what you’re used to, but in our eyes fashion’s all about individuality.
