LFW Highlights: Meadham Kirchhoff

By Andrea Petrou on September 21st, 2010

It was a foray into a slightly scary version of Tim Burton’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory at the Meadham Kirchhoff show.
Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy played and sickly sweet giant lolly pops stood around the catwalk. However, once the show started, it turned more into the Corpse Bride film set with the florals and pretty designs, which had been pushed by many designers this year, given a gothic and punk twist. Frills and lace dresses were oversized and printed and yellows and bright pinks streamed out from backstage alongside scary, yet pretty (we know it’s a contradiction) babushka doll style red dresses.

There was also a sheer harem style pants in Aztec prints as well as Peter Pan colours attached to baby doll 60s style frocks.

It was a very different collection to say the least…

LFW Highlights: Nicole Farhi

By Andrea Petrou on September 21st, 2010

Nicole Farhi caused a frenzy even before she showed off her SS2011 range. She bagged herself Anna Wintour as a front row spectator. Sitting alongside other fashionistas Wintour watched as Nicole’s models strutted down the catwalk in ready to wear designs in pale and soothing colours including whites, baby pinks and mellow yellows. Dresses were flowing and silk, while jackets were the traditional summer fabric of choice: Linen.

And Nicole also stepped up her eveningwear range with sheer layered dresses complete with sequin embellishment.

Personally I like a little bit more “oomph” in a catwalk range, and to be fair there were a few metallic trouser and top creations, but it wasn’t enough. On the other hand it does hit the mark in the “ready to wear” stakes.

LFW Highlights: Abbey Clancey and Kelly Brook model for Giles Deacon

By Andrea Petrou on September 21st, 2010

It was all about curves and creativity for Giles Deacon’s SS2011 show.

The designer made his LFW comeback sending curvy Kelly Brook and pregnant Abbey Clancey down the runway alongside Amber Le Bon and Agyness Deyn in floral 50s inspired frocks.

Fringing (we can see this is going to be huge next season) also made an appearance on maxi dresses and skirts, while polka dot slim fitting frocks, complete with skinny belts kept the 50s theme. But that wasn’t all with the designer also giving us a range of floaty delights, playsuits and some gorgeous billowing satin and silk frocks.

We think we may have just found our favourite collection so far.

LFW Highlights: Mulberry

By Andrea Petrou on September 21st, 2010

Mulberry decided to put not one, but two shows on for LFW week this season and finished with a party that attracted A-list fashionistas such as Alexa Chung.

And the designer kept the same theme displayed at its NYFW week show, which emitted a dreamy, springtime mood. Pale auburn-haired girls floated down the rose garden decorated catwalk in satin pink skirts and sky blue tie dye dresses, which gave a nod to the 80s and the romantic era.

However, the designer also gave us a few sassy creations including a multicoloured animal print dress and a beige skirt, which resembled the roses on the catwalk.

And of course lets not forget the bags, which came in all shapes and sizes from totes, to shoulder to satchels.

We’re not ashamed to admit we let ourselves drawl a teeny tiny bit over these.

LFW Highlights: Mark Fast

By Andrea Petrou on September 21st, 2010

Mark Fast has become well known in fashion circles for his barely there cobweb knits and his use of plus sized models (we still remember them marching down the AW2010 catwalk looking great).

And the designer’s SS2011 yesterday didn’t disappoint. Fast kept his statement bodycon knitted styles but ramped them up for the summer season adding glossy patent panels and creating even teeny tinier knits.

He also gave a nod to the Amazonian trend incorporating fringing, which looked like exotic coloured feathers to his staple knits. Models looked like birds of paradise in short multicoloured skirts, and we were wowed by Fast’s maxi number, which he sent down for the finale.

We want one of these dresses now….make it happen fashion fairy godmother.

LFW Highlights: Twenty8Twelve

By Andrea Petrou on September 20th, 2010

Sienna Miller’s on-again boyfriend Jude Law may have stolen the paparazzi’s attention with his front-row presence at Twenty8Twelve’s spring 2011 show, we were more focused on the show, she and her sister Savannah, put on for their label.

Full skirt 50s style dresses complete with white petticoats and hems full of colour graced the catwalk. The sisters also gave a nod to 1950s Mexico with frocks in golden hues, a fringed pocahontas dress and suedes as well as  maxi dresses emitting an Aztec vibe.

Unlike many of the designers who opted for bold colours Sienna and her sis went instead for khakis, denim blues and dusty creams mixed in with white and the odd burst of lemon. We like a lot ladies.

LFW highlights: Felder Felder

By Andrea Petrou on September 20th, 2010

Cobalt blue, bright pinks and a strong dose of rebellion were the key to Felder Felder’s SS2010 collection.

Models marched down the catwalk to a soundtrack of I Blame Coco’s (Coco Sumner’s band) version of Steppenwolf’s Born To Be Wild (famous for its use in Easy Rider) in whimsical skirts and dresses in vividly bright hues, skater skirts, loose blazers and bra tops, as well as the twin’s trademark skinny black trousers and ruched rubber leggings.

Is it wrong to want the summer season to come around now?

LFW Highlights: Vivienne Westwood Red Label

By Andrea Petrou on September 20th, 2010

With Pamela Anderson in the front row and Daisy Lowe modelling, Vivienne Westwood’s Red Label SS2011 show was bound to be a good one.

The designer sent her models down the catwalk in signature tailored shorts, skirts and dresses, some of which had asymmetrical hems and draping.

However, true to form, we also got some twists, a la Dame Westwood style. These included
shorts with squares cut out at the hips, shoulders with extra fabric that gave them added shape and volume, and our favourite….tassels that hung off the tail of a leopard-print skirt. As you would expect there were also numerous printed tees.

Colours and fabric ranged from bright plaids, pyjama stripes (Tesco won’t be liking that), checks and leopard print.

LFW Highlights: Matthew Williamson

By Andrea Petrou on September 20th, 2010

Matthew Williamson’s catwalk shows are one of the most anticipated at London Fashion Week, and his SS2011 collection, named Urban Bohemian, didn’t disappoint.

Walking down the catwalk to an apt Summertime remix, models displayed soft summer fabrics including chiffon, tulle and lace in pale pastels, and of course florals and stripes.

Shapes were loose yet feminine and ruffles made up part of the collection.
Williamson also gave a nod to the 60s with vintage baby doll dresses as well as asymmetric
flowing frocks.

There were also some serious tailored trousers cut to flatter all figures which were just waiting to be snapped up for their rails. However our favourite piece of the day has got to be the peacock feathered sequin skirt. We really hope buyers take note and create something similar for next summer.

NYFW Hightlights: Jeremy Scott

By Andrea Petrou on September 16th, 2010

Jeremy Scott decided to ignore the classic looks displayed by many designers at NYFW, sending his models down in 80s chic.

Kanye West, Solange Knowles and Kelly Osbourne watched from the front row as models made up like clones of a young Marilyn Monroe,  took on Debbie Harry fashion with printed 80s tees (we’re sure Vivienne Westwood and Henry Holland would approve), PVC skirts and bustier dresses.

Others strutted down the runway in (fake) prosciutto dresses (take note, Lady Gaga), garbage bag dresses and even a straitjacket wedding dress…. well some people say you do have to be mad to get wed….

NYFW Highlights: Elie Tahari

By Andrea Petrou on September 15th, 2010

While some designers sent their models down the S/S catwalk in outrageous designs Elie Tahari stuck to his classic guns.

The designer, known for his safe, yet gorgeous designs opted for neutral colours (they’re going to be huge next season ladies) but added a little bit of glam with some shimmering fabrics, which was demonstrated in his gold-coloured metallic bustier worn with a cotton viole shirt, gold-coloured metallic hot shorts and a platform wedge sandal.

As expected with any S/S 2011 collection, there were lots of shorts, which leaned more towards a sportier look than the previous cutesy styles, and like many designers he also gave a small, updated nod to the 70s with offerings such as a denim playsuit (hold on those), a range of all in ones and smart tailored trousers.

NYFW Highlights:Diane Von Furstenberg

By Andrea Petrou on September 15th, 2010

Diane Von Furstenberg’s designs alway stand out at NYFW. The designs are soft, yet the prints bold and this season the designer didn’t disappoint.

Giving a nod to the 60s, which was perhaps driven by the current Mad Men trend, DVF’s prints were monochrome, colourful in small and large blocks and featured on loose jackets, 60s shift dresses, Capri pants, jumpsuits and swing back jackets.

And the colours were just as bold as the prints with purples, golds,  tan and lime, running through the collection.

Aside from the 60s VonFurstenberg also made the Grecian Goddess theme huge part of her collection, with floaty dresses complete with tassells in lame fabrics and accessories with silver beading.
