Kate Hudson felt like the “hippest” girl in the world when Stella McCartney agreed to dress her for the 2001 Oscars.

By Andrea Petrou on November 30th, 2011

Kate Hudson felt like the “hippest” girl in the world when Stella McCartney agreed to dress her for the 2001 Oscars.

Kate was just 21 when she received a nomination for Best Supporting Actress and was thrilled when the designer agreed to make a gown for her to wear to the prestigious event.

However, it didn’t go down to well with the world’s press but both Kate and Stella blame the high up-do she teamed the dress with.

She recalled: “Stella dressed me for my first red carpet event in 2001 for the Academy Awards. It was my first and only nomination. I was 21-years-old and to have Stella McCartney dressing me – well I felt like the hippest, coolest girl in the world. Up until the last minute Stella was working away, hand-sewing the hem. I woke up the next morning in my bed post-awards and without a little statuette on my bedside. I turned on the television to find out I was on every Worst Dressed list possible. So I called Stella and we just laughed our arses off and she said to me, “Look babe, it was the hair wasn’t it?”

However, Kate says she will wear the dress again but will style her tresses in more stylish way.

She said: “To this day that now vintage dress hangs in my wardrobe, but I swear one day I’ll wear it again. But Stella, I promise I’ll do the hair differently.”

Alexander McQueen’s McQ to show at LFW

By Andrea Petrou on November 24th, 2011

McQ will show for the first time at London Fashion Week in February 2012.

The Alexander McQueen diffusion line’s catwalk show of their autumn/winter 2012-13 collection will serve as a preview for the label’s debut store opening later in the year.

McQ are to open a store carrying womenswear, menswear and accessories in a Georgian townhouse in London’s exclusive Mayfair district.

Yesterday, it was announced that Stella McCartney will also show for the first time at London Fashion Week.

The British designer will showcase a “one off special fashion presentation” on February 18 ahead of an assault on the British capital which will see her launch a ‘World of Stella’ exhibition of Selfridges, a new fragrance launch, and the opening of a second store.

However, she will then present her new collection in Paris, France as she has done for the past decade.

Alexander McQueen – who was known as Lee to friends – committed suicide in February 2010 but his successor Sarah Burton recently revealed the company still runs as if he were alive.

She explained: “Lee used to always say that you have to know all the rules to be able to break them.

“We have an open studio, so a big room, and it’s very visual. On the wall, there are just hundreds of images from all different kinds of periods and fabrics. Lee taught me to do things in a three-dimensional way.”

Stella McCartney to show at London Fashion Week for the first time in 2012.

By Andrea Petrou on November 23rd, 2011

Stella McCartney will show at London Fashion Week for the first time in 2012.

Meanwhile, dates for the ‘Louis Vuitton Marc Jacobs’ exhibition at Les Arts Decoratifs in Paris have been announced.

The celebration of the long-running collaboration between the designer and the French leather goods firm will begin on March 6, the day before Paris Fashion Week wraps up and is set to run until September 16.

Despite being linked with a move to Christian Dior to take over from disgraced designer John Galliano, Marc recently revealed he has no plans to leave Louis Vuitton because he enjoys considerable freedom with the company.

He explained: “I could never do this anywhere else. It’s not just a Paris thing – Vuitton allows me. It’s really, really something I feel particularly proud of and am grateful to the team for. We’ve all worked really hard and gone through a lot to get this to where it is now and we’re starting to see results.”

Stella McCartney to launch eco friendly sunglasses next year

By Andrea Petrou on October 17th, 2011

Stella McCartney will launch a line of eco-friendly sunglasses next year.

The British designer and environmentalist – who is a vegetarian and refuses to use leather or fur in her creations – revealed the new collection will be made of more than 50 per cent natural and renewable materials.

She told WWD: “The greatest challenge was the amount of time that was spent on research and testing to get the best quality product possible with the highest performance in terms of resistance, while still maintaining the style and finish we always try to achieve.”

This is not Stella’s first sunglasses collection, she released a line in 2009 in collaboration with Luxottica and says it’s important to have fun with them.

She explained: “Women have two sets: a classic pair they’ll have forever, and a more playful pair. We’ve added that fun element to the line. ‘My mum had this mad pair with Christmas trees on them that I loved when I was little. Sunglasses are one of the only accessories that can really have a sense of humour. But you walk a fine line between looking like a complete idiot and getting it just right.”

Style spotlight: Mrs Paul McCartney, otherwise known as Nancy Shevell

By Andrea Petrou on October 12th, 2011

Nancy Shevell has become one to watch in the fashion world following her wedding to one of the world’s most eligible bachelors.
The heiress who tied the knot with Sir Paul McCartney in a 40s style white frock designed by Stella McCartney, has caught the style crews eye thanks to her classic style.
Unlike many a superstar’s wife Nancy opts for understated chic. She’s a huge fan of the classic shift dress, which she dresses up with embellishments for a night out, while velvet is also a regular is her wardrobe.
However, she’s also a fan of the vintage trend, often spotted in a range of 60s and 40s pieces.

We’re sure with style like this she gets on very well with her designer step daughter.

Miranda Kerr wants her son to date Stella McCartney’s daughter

By Andrea Petrou on October 4th, 2011

Miranda Kerr wants her son to date Stella McCartney’s daughter.

The Australian supermodel walked for the British designer – who has four children with husband Alasdhair Willis – at Paris Fashion Week and spotted a potential future love interest for Flynn, her nine-month-old son with spouse Orlando Bloom.

She said: “It’s funny because Stella’s little girl Reiley is almost the same age as Flynn so watch out – Flynn might start dating her.”

The 28-year-old beauty also admitted combining work with raising Flynn can be difficult while he is still so young.

She told People.com: “I’m still breastfeeding so I have to express milk and send it back to Flynn and then try and see him on my breaks.

“I was up for hours last night as he’s teething. And when he’s crying, he just wants Mommy! It’s such hard work.”

However, Miranda admits her husband is a great help with the baby as he is very hands-on.

She added: “He loves changing diapers! But seriously, he’s very hands on. I really couldn’t ask for a better dad.”

Despite her praise for Orlando, Miranda insists the couple have no plans for any more children in the near future.

Asked if they are ready to expand their family, she said: “Not yet but let’s see.”

Autumn/Winter Trend Alert: Polka dots

By emilyborrett on August 9th, 2011

Designers like Marc Jacobs (pictured) and Stella McCartney were all over the polka dot trends this Autumn/Winter

Picture 1 of 9
Picture 1 of 9

It’s a big hooray from me as one of my absolute favourite trends is back again for this Autumn/Winter – this season it is all about bold graphic prints, specifically the polka dot, as seen on the catwalks at Marc Jacobs and Stella McCartney.

I love polka dots because they can be either sexy or girl-next-door depending on how they’re worn. Want to be a ’50s sex siren? Team a sheer spotted pussybow blouse with a hip-hugging pencil skirt and stilettos for a fiercely sexy look, or look for vintage-style sundresses and skirts for a look that’s girlier.

In the past polka dots have been small, dainty prints, but on the catwalks this year they’ve gotten bigger, bolder and more graphic. If you want to copy Marc Jacobs’ severe secretary style, Asos does an amazing black and white pillbox hat that is almost exactly the same as the one seen on his runway. We also love River Island’s sixties-style polka printed tunic – just team it with a jewel bright duffel coat and some sharp ankle boots for a look that’s perfectly on trend this season.

Check out the gallery above for our favourite polka-dot lovelies.

Trend Alert: Top 10 loafers and brogues

By emilyborrett on August 2nd, 2011

Madison Animal-Print Loafer

With starlets everywhere choosing to chop off their looks for boyish styles and spurning evening gowns for tuxedo jackets and suits, androgyny has never been hotter than it is right now. Thanks to Dolce & Gabbana and Stella McCartney, this Autumn it’s going to be all about doing it like a dude, and we want in.

Luckily there’s a cool and easy way to go androgynous without having to wear a zoot suit, if that sounds a little daunting to you – forget your trusty ballerina flats and trade them in for a masculine, classic pair of brogues or loafers a la Alexa Chung, because within a month or so they’ll be the only flat shoe that matters. They’ll look good with anything, whether it’s a floaty summer dress or a pair of skinny jeans and a band shirt. (Especially good with skinny jeans and a band shirt).

The high street is allll over this trend – I particularly recommend Topshop, whose scarlet leopard-printed loafers are a quirky and colourful take on the trend and will look great with a pair of leggings and a slouchy jumper for a laid-back look. Another favourite pair is the metallic pewter pair from Asos, which will jazz up a pair of jeans or an old dress.

This is a great trend for us Brits because classic masculine footwear is what we do best. It’s quirky, old fashioned and cool – get on board with this season’s It shoe and check out the gallery above.

Blake Lively to become a brand ambassador for Stella McCartney.

By Andrea Petrou on July 4th, 2011

cnsnd

Blake Lively is to become a brand ambassador for Stella McCartney.

The ‘Gossip Girl’ star – who is reportedly dating film star Leonardo DiCaprio – met the fashion designer after striking up a conversation about their mutual love of vegetarianism, and will now represent the brand in her native US.

A source told The Mail on Sunday newspaper: “Like Leonardo, Blake is an animal lover and believes in cruelty-free fashion so when she met Stella at the Costume Institute gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art last month she found they shared many of the same ideals.

“Stella thinks Blake would be the perfect brand ambassador for her company in America.”

Blake, 23, has recently been photographed wearing Stella’s designs for a magazine shoot.

The actress is also an ambassador for Chanel, signing with the iconic fashion house last year, and shooting an advertising campaign for their range of Mademoiselle bags.

Chanel creative director Karl Lagerfeld said of the young star: “She’s a kind of American dream girl. I think she will become a great actress.”

Spotted at Beyonce’s album launch: Alisson Mosshart, Stella McCartney, Yasmin and Paloma Faith

Stella McCartney looked sleek and sophisticated as always in a vintage-feel butterfly top and grey skinny jeans

It’s a good time to be Beyonce right now. Fiercer and more on top of her fashion game than ever, everyone has been talking about her incredible headlining performance at Glastonbury on Sunday (if you didn’t see it look it up on Youtube RIGHT NOW – the woman was phenomenal).

Which is why yesterday’s launch party for her new album, 4, was a cool and eclectic mix of celebrities all there to mingle and celebrate their love of Miss B. From fashion designers to DJs and pop stars and beyond, everyone was there.

Representing the fashion world alongside Julien McDonald was Stella McCartney, looking sleek and graceful in a pretty and retro sequinned butterfly top with skinny jeans and a simple tan clutch. Julia Restoin-Roitfeld, Parisian society girl, was also there looking stunning in an understated lace dress with her hair drawn back in a ballerina bun.

Less low-key was Paloma Faith in a theatrical feather-hat and a pair of the tiniest shorts we’ve ever seen, but are we surprised? No, not really. We love Paloma’s complete inability to dress appropriately for an event – it makes her a joy to write about. We have to say that she was flaunting some curves to rival Beyonce herself.

As for musical talent, there was a cool and diverse mix of different artists and styles present. We were surprised to see that Kills singer, Alisson Mosshart was there – who’d have known she was a Beyonce fan? (But then again, who isn’t?) Anyway, she looked cool in a low-key band shirt and black denim teamed with a slouchy denim-look shirt, an outfit that set off her shaggy black mane perfectly. Also there rocking a more laid-back look was up-and-coming Scottish DJ Yasmin, who’s already played Glasto this summer and is tipped to be a chart star, looking pretty and understated in some sawn-off dungarees and hot-pink wedges to set off her post-festival tan. We’re going to be watching this girl’s style from now on.

Meanwhile, pop’s divas were out in full force as well. Jade from the Sugababes was spotted at the launch looking amazing in an unbelievably short digital-printed cocktail dress with studded cut-out patterns. We have to find out where that dress is from! It worked perfectly against sexy evening makeup and some soft 70s-inspired waves.

And last but certainly not least, Alexandra Burke made an appearance wearing a simple knitted dress that gave a nod to the latest folk and 70s trends. A perfect summer outfit that rounds off today’s “Spotted” gallery perfectly. To see all the stars at Beyonce’s album launch party, check out the images above.

Stella McCartney wanted stylish sportswear

By Andrea Petrou on May 5th, 2011

Stella McCartney has tried to ensure the Adidas competition wear she designed for the 2012 Olympic Games is both sporty and stylish.

The fashion designer – who was announced last year as the creator of the sportswear firm’s kit for both the British Olympic and Paralympic teams to wear at the London event – has narrated a short film featuring some of the athletes who will wear her designs next year to showcase the clothes.

She told Britain’s Vogue magazine: “Sport and style have always been the starting point for this collaboration. We wanted to take it to another art form for this collection by making a film and capturing the athletes in movement which is at the heart of this process.”

Stella enlisted fashion photographer Jacob Sutton to make the film and he explained they decided to incorporate the four elements – fire, earth, air, and water – into the shoot to create an “iconic” image.

He said: “I wanted to create imagery that was as iconic and raw as the elements they represent. Textual richness and elegance of the four executions are important to bring strength and majesty to the campaign.”

Stella recently revealed she found the process of designing the competition wear incredibly challenging.

She said: “I mean you’re working with athletes. The main thing I want do is not in any way get involved with making their performance not its best. So for me I want to make them the best they can be.

“I’m obviously working with incredibly technical fabrics and dealing with silhouettes that I wouldn’t normally perhaps work with.

“So there are challenges – I have a million challenges. I have to make it look good on TV, I have to make it feel good for the athletes, I have to make it work – technically it has to do its job. But I think they’re all good challenges – I like a challenge.”
