Zoe Saldana loves New York style

By emilyborrett on August 23rd, 2011

Zoe Saldana, the Avatar actress, is a huge fan of New York and the style of it’s inhabitants.

Zoe revealed that her absolute pet peeve when it comes to fashion is women that try too hard – something that she doesn’t think is a part of NYC style.

The actress said: “I have this love affair with New York that I just can’t quit, and that applies to New Yorkers’ style too. I can’t stand when people get lost in clothes because they are trying to impress. We get that a lot in Los Angeles. You need to wear your clothes, your clothes can’t wear you. New Yorkers understand that.”

Zoe, who herself in the past has launched her own clothing line with her sisters, refuses to buy in to the culture of label-mania and would rather choose clothes that adhere to her own style sensibilities.

She said: “Five years ago my sisters and I created our own brand, called Arasmaci, but we actually produced no more than a few T-shirts and some accessories because I became overwhelmed by ‘Avatar’. For many people, including a lot of actresses, fashion is all about brand names, logos, status symbols, but for me, it’s an art form.”

Whitney's perfected Beverley Hills laidback cool in this slouchy denim shirt and hotpants combo - who said that double denim doesn't work?

As the weather slowly brightens up in the UK (we can go out without wearing thermal vests under our outfits! There’s blossom on the trees!) we can start to look forward to what will hopefully be a long, glorious and fashionable spring/summer. Us Brits are good to take tips from during the winter months, but for fashion inspiration it’s better to look across the pond to where the stars dress for gloriously sunny weather almost all year round. You don’t need to look much further than The City TV-star Whitney Port.

More friendly and accessible than Olivia Palermo, more fashion-savvy than Lauren Conrad, she’s the perfect ambassador for laidback summer dressing. We’re particular fans of her off-duty style that she’s papped out and about in; slouchy denim shirts, hotpants and flip-flops and sunnies. And in true It-girl style, she’s never without an absolutely killer bag. Check out our gallery to see our favourite recent Whitney moments.

There’s a new face of British style at the moment that’s been getting a lot of respect from all the major fashion magazines, and that is the dishevelled singer Coco Sumner, daughter of Sting and frontwoman of British band I Blame Coco. The fact that she comes from good musical stock has been a good starting point for Coco’s musical career, but what has really caught the public’s eye is her boyish, tweedy public-school style that is a refreshing change from all the micro-mini dresses and big hair that so many celebrities seem to favour in public. In fact, the girl doesn’t look like she brushes her hair at all. We like her.

To copy her style entirely you’re better off if you’ve got a leggy, boyish figure, though if you’re a more curvy shape it’s still easy to integrate a bit of her British Heritage look into your wardrobe. If you’ve got the figure, you can go the whole hog with the teeny-tiny shorts she’s never seen out of teamed up with old-school Oxford brogues and ankle socks for the “Eton boy” look. Alternatively, if you don’t think you’ve got the pins for it, you can easily get Coco’d by just wearing a tweed blazer with elbow patches and scruffing up your hair before you leave the house.

The best places to buy boyish Oxford-style pieces are traditional stores such as Barbour and Hobbs London, though obviously if you haven’t got the budget of a rockstar’s daughter you can’t afford to kit yourself out from head to toe in these stores. Alternatively, you can buy some authentic vintage pieces and accessories (Coco loves her briefcases and men’s suitcases – who needs a purse?) for a fraction of the price in vintage stalls, shops and online at Ebay. Check the gallery above for some of the best Coco-style clothes online.

Designer pick of the week: Yuki

By Andrea Petrou on September 22nd, 2010

By Emily Borrett.

If you’re looking for a few classic staples that you can wear both to work and out on the town this A/W, you don’t need to look any further than R-T-W designer Yuki, whose clothes take direct inspiration from Tokyo’s Shibuya Street and Japanese street style.

The current collection, which is for sale on various online designer boutiques such as Bunnyhug.com, are mainly comprised of classic tailored shirts that could be worn to the office or to a club, depending on how they’re styled. It’s a palette of rust, camel, neutrals and classic whites that have been seen all over the catwalks this season – but instead of spending a bomb on a blouse from Chloe, Yuki retails at high-street prices. I’m currently lusting over the rust-coloured shirt with diamanté detailing on the pockets and the preppy “unbalanced” shirt in cream.

You may think that Yuki has been somewhat below the fashion radar but not so – the brand has been slowly and surely getting love from the media world and celebrities such as Sienna Miller and Peaches Geldof are fans. Check the gallery below for some of their sharp designs.

Spotted in London: Ellen Page, Claudia Schiffer and more

By emilyborrett on July 8th, 2010

Celebrities have been all over London in the last couple of days, some looking better than others.

Ellen Page, the pint sized Juno star was seen going into the Dorchester Hotel with a takeaway salad in London, looking fresh-faced but scruffily down to earth in weathered-looking jeans and trainers.

There seemed to be some kind of celebrity get-together at ITV studios, where Diana Vickers, looking glossy and sweet in a sailor-collar dress and tennis shoes, Sophie Ellis Bextor, looking ethereal in black opaques and a printed minidress, and Holly Willoughby were each papped leaving the studios. Holly looked glamorous and polished leaving in a blue minidress to show off her curves and was sporting sixties-esque blonde curls. The same cannot be said for her best friend and partner-in-crime Fearne Cotton, who emerged from the Radio 1 offices looking grungy and dishevelled in a button-up mididress, denim jacket and fiercely studded shoes.

Victoria Beckham also looked less than her usual self as she was snapped in her car on the way to the office looking tired and strained, but still chic in satellite-dish sunnies and a sleek dark wardrobe.

Blonde beauties Emma Rigby (of Hollyoaks fame) and uber-babe Claudia Schiffer were both seen about about about in London. Emma was papped tripping prettily out of the Christian Louboutin store in a cool slouchy blazer, stripy tee and skyscraping periwinkle-blue heels, whilst Claudia was spotted doing the school run looking effortlessly European in what looks like a Stella McCartney denim midi-skirt with a printed tee and huge fringed tote bag.

Last but not least, Amy Winehouse was spotted going into her friend Mark Ronson’s gig at Bungalow 8 looking her old self in her trademark 1950s Grease mode of dress, a pair of acid wash pedal pushers, silk top, with a red scarf cheekily tied into her infamous beehive.

Today’s “Spotted in London” fashion award goes to Diana Vickers, who’s style has come such a long way from the cavegirl-hair-and-weird-claw phase. Top marks, Vickers.

Twitter now being used by Stylesignal to guess what you’ll be wearing in 2011

By lotte on November 2nd, 2009

Alexa twitter screenshot.jpgAny idea what’s going to be hot the season after next? We might be able to make a guess, but in the fashion industry trend forecasting is big business. Now ‘fashion forecasting’ company Stylesignal is using Twitter to guess what the biggest upcoming looks will be. They analyse what we’re twittering about and make a handy chart out of the data to pass on to companies – so if you tweet incessantly about your latest outfit, you could be being watched, and your look could end up in the shops.

Mind you, the style icons we’d most like to dress like probably don’t care about trends, just what suits them – Cheryl Cole is addicted to miniskirts, Agyness loves her Converse, and when has Alexa Chung not worn ankle boots?

We say hit the street style blogs or look out the window of the bus if you want to see the future of fashion, because trends start with people who are just like you and me, only a bit braver. Spot them and you’ll beat the fashion forecasters – we’ll leave the science-y trend analysing to the people who do it best. And next time you Twitter about a new, amazingly original way to do your belt up, don’t be surprised if it pops up in Grazia next week.
