Style spotlight: Florence Welch

By Elisabeth on December 9th, 2011

We all know one of the most important beauty commandments is to get enough sleep, and we do try our best to get the recommended hours each week despite living hectic lives. But it seems like Florence and the Machine singer Florence Welch has another opinion altogether.

Florence says she feels ‘special’ when she realises she has stayed awake for over 24 hours and that her ‘favourite mode of being’ is having not slept. She continues: “The reason why it’s so special is because you know that it’s going to crash. As soon as you go to sleep, you know everything will be reset double and work will be double.”

This may be the case Florence, but we still do love our beauty sleep.

If Florence’s ‘sleep idea’ has anything to do with her choice of fashion we do not know, but take a look at the gallery below for some of her outfits over the past couple of years.

Style spotlight: Gwyneth Paltrow

By Elisabeth on October 21st, 2011

It's not all black...

Picture 1 of 7
Picture 1 of 7

One of our favourite looks. The blonde hair teamed with the black dress (and long legs) is stunning

We must admit we’re quite envious of Gwyneth’s slender body. Then again living on the diet she’s apparently on - macrobiotic last time we checked – we rather have our cake and eat it too… But she does seem to glow in most of the photos we’ve seen.  Now the Oscar-winning actress – who has two children Apple and Moses – has revealed that if she doesn’t get a lot of rest though, it shows in her appearance. Fantastic, she’s human!

In a recent interview Gwynnie said: “For me, sleep is a major thing. I don’t always get it, and when I don’t, I look like I’ve been hit by a truck.” Well, either way your hubby – Chris Martin – doesn’t seem to care the way he’s been gushing about you lately Gwyn…

Other secrets to maintaining a youthful look? Drink lots of water, take vitamins “religiously” and have at least one cup of coffee – with almond milk – each morning… Well two out of three isn’t that bad is it?

Oh yeah, and book in a celebrity trainer!

If you want to steal Gwyneth’s style, check out the gallery above.

Style spotlight: Kate Bosworth

Kate (far right) shines at the Costume Institute Gala in New York alongside Liv Tyler, Stella McCartney and Kate Hudson. We absolutely adore her peekaboo black gown

In light of Kate Bosworth’s newly-revealed rule of only wearing creations by fashion designers with good manners, we thought we’d have a look over the actress’ recent style file. One thing we can say about her is that she always looks fashion-perfect right down to the tippy-toes, whether she’s in a cool Jil Sander maxi skirt or a Lanvin evening gown for the red carpet.

What we like about Kate is that she is a girl who doesn’t shy away from colour – and she shouldn’t, with her ice-blonde 1940s hair and peachy colouring, this is one girl who was born to experiment with her look. We particularly love Kate in a cool peppermint-green Jil Sander skirt with a classic white T-shirt to contrast against hot pink lipstick, or Kate in a delicate white lace Erdem dress with splashes of vibrant, hot red.

This is one woman who was born to wear high fashion. Miss Bosworth – ShinyStyle salutes you.

Style spotlight: Emma Stone

By emilyborrett on August 25th, 2011

The ageing comedian Jim Carrey revealed that he, like us, has a smacking great big crush on Emma Stone. He said about the Spiderman actress: “Emma, I think you’re all the way beautiful. Not just pretty, but smart and kind-hearted. And if I were a lot younger, I would marry you. We would have chubby little freckle-faced kids. We’d laugh all day long, go camping and play Yahtzee. Tell ghost stories by the fire.” This is quite an adorable mental image, which Jim can totally keep all for himself – because we’re primarily in love with the starlet’s red-carpet wardrobe.

We love Emma because she is such a fashion chameleon. Going through her paparazzi/red carpet photos we were momentarily confused when we saw a photograph of her with a cool, ice-blonde crop instead of her now-trademark flaming red locks, because she looked like a completely different woman. Emma’s got the wonderful ability to adapt her look and chop and change her style to be whoever she wants to be.

We did like Emma when she was a blonde but we have to say we absolutely ADORE her red waves – her hair looks so perfect against her beautiful and completely clear (damn her!) pale skin and kind of reminds us of Old Hollywood. She’s got a perfect, classic sense of style and always looks impeccable at any event. Check out the gallery for our favourite Emma Stone fashion moments in the gallery above.

Style spotlight: Zooey Deschanel

When we were browsing the paparazzi photos for the première of “Our Idiot Brother”, we were particularly taken with Zooey Deschanel’s unusual red carpet dress. The actress had chosen to wear an unusual black pencil dress with white ruffles and frills – it could look awful on the wrong person, but with Zooey’s milky pale skin, blue eyes and dark hair it looked perfect. We’d completely forgotten that we love Zooey!

She’s been off our radar until the last couple of months, but over the summer she’s been popping up here and there at various glam press parties. We love her sweet, girlish signature style of folk dresses, 50s silhouettes and babydoll shapes – she’s never one to go full-out glamour at a red carpet event, opting instead for understated vintage pieces. Our kind of girl.

Check out the gallery above for our favourite Zooey fashion highlights.

Style spotlight: Lea Michele

By emilyborrett on August 16th, 2011

Pretty in pink: Lea opted for rose-tinted romance in this candy-coloured ruffled gown at the Golden Globes

Anyone with Glee fever, or indeed simply anyone with an eye for style, can understand why we’ve got such a girl-crush on Lea Michele right now. Despite her unusual looks she’s proved the nay-sayers wrong with her quirky beauty and eye for dramatic fashion – if ever there was a new iconic diva on the block to follow in the footsteps of Barbara Streisland etc, Lea Michele is the woman for the job.

Just earlier today we reported on her evolving sense of style, according to Glee director Ryan Murphy. Ever since we first got Glee fever and saw that first red paparazzi photo of Lea with sultry seventies hair in a floral maxi-dress, a far cry from the preppy style of her character Rachel Berry, we’ve been hooked.

We particularly love her red carpet style – Lea never goes for the understated option at glamorous events, often opting for gowns with bold splashes of colour, huge dramatic fishtail dresses and scarily high heels.

Here is our gallery of our favourite Lea Michele moments, check it out above.

Style spotlight: Hailee Steinfeld

By emilyborrett on August 9th, 2011

Hailee looked like romantic 1950s perfection in this soft-pink full-skirted prom dress with a classic updo, at the Academy Awards this year

Picture 1 of 9
Picture 1 of 9

Is it just us here at ShinyStyle, or is all the talent in Hollywood getting younger and younger? Justin Bieber has had a film made about him when his voice hasn’t even broken yet, Willow Smith is storming the charts at age 11 and we’ve just realised that not only is the teenage True Grit star Hailee Steinfeld an amazing actress, but she’s already got a Hollywood wardrobe good enough to rival any older actress’.

We love that unlike other young girls in the limelight like Miley Cyrus, who have already gone down the vomit-inducing sexy route with tight dresses and big hair, Hailee closely follows the trends and wears what suits her. The 14-year old actress has already developed a strong sense of her own style, combining romantic cocktail dresses with fiercely high heels and vintage-inspired prim blouses and power-pencil skirts.

We especially adored her outfit that she wore to the Academy Awards this year, as she donned a gently sparkling peach chiffon 50s prom dress with nude satin peeptoe heels and an elegant updo for an outfit that wouldn’t have looked out of place at a couture gala sixty years ago.

Miu Miu are particularly fond of young Hailee – maybe it’s because she’s always spotted wearing their designs, or maybe it’s just because she’s a pretty young thing, but she’s now the face of their new campaign. Jealous? Us? Naaaah.

Stylist and presenter Grace Woodward is perhaps most known outside the fashion circuit for her role as a judge on Britain & Ireland’s Next Top Model where she happily shares her opinions –  at times quite harsh – to the hopeful wannabe models.

Often seen on ‘Hot Lists’ Grace definitely has an eye for what looks good, and despite a couple of fashion hiccups along the way, she is pretty cool most of the time. Grace’s celebrity clientele includes La Roux, Florence and the Machine, Green Day and Pharrell Williams.

Style spotlight: Up-and-comer DJ Yasmin

By emilyborrett on June 28th, 2011

Yasmin gets to work and play at the same time: the DJ teams a sexy bustier with short shorts and a fresh 90s printed shirt for this promotional picture

Scottish singer/DJ Yasmin has been flickering on and off my style radar for a while now –  I first read about her in Wonderland a few months ago where the prolific fash-mag gushed about her talents and how she’s destined for big things. Since seeing that piece it seems like the dark-haired beauty has been quietly popping up everywhere, at festivals, parties and events, and I think it’s about time that ShinyStyle shone the spotlight on the DJ’s cool, eclectic dress sense.

Her style is just like her music- fresh, exciting and youthful with more than a nod to 80s and 90s electro. We love how Yasmin crams different influences together for a style that is completely her own, mixing grunge, vintage and modern futuristic styles for the perfect party look. Even if you’re not a DJ club-hopper like Miss Yasmin herself, you can take a leaf from her book and mix your styles together to look like you are.

Yasmin’s tipped to be a big star in the charts, but we have a feeling that it won’t be long before she’s spotted in the front row at Fashion Week, either. Keep an eye out for this girl – I know ShinyStyle will be. Want to know more about her? Check out her site, Yasmin’s World, to check out her remixes, mix-tapes and blog updates (she’s a big fashion lover as well as a hot-shot music gal).

Style Spotlight: January Jones [photos]

January back in 2008. Very hippy chic!

We’ll happily admit that we’ve had a bit of a girl crush on Mad Men actress January Jones for a long time. Since rising to fame in the 50s based TV series, Jones has been followed around by photographers to get a shot of her performing daily tasks. Would be a bit annoying really…

However, the blonde beauty – who is expecting her first baby in autumn, although she is yet to disclose who the father is – told The Sun that she feels “safe” when followed around by paparazzi.

“The weird thing is, it kind of makes me feel safe. I live alone and I feel like they’re always there, always watching. If someone were to come in and rob me, there are photographers. It’s like the best security system ever.”

Now that we know what January thinks about the paparazzi, let’s take a look at her style evolution.
