Nicola Roberts mixes her designers to achieve her look and says Henry Holland is one of her favourites

By Andrea Petrou on October 13th, 2011

Nicola Roberts doesn’t like to stick to one designer.

The flame-haired singer – who recently released her debut album ‘Cinderella’s Eyes’ – believes there are a “lot” of “cool labels” and she would hate to restrict herself to a limited number of outfits.

She said: “I don’t like sticking with one person or thing, ever. There’s a lot of cool labels out there; I’m open minded enough to be a fan of many designers and make a few of their looks work for me. Regardless of how commercial or left-field they are, I respect most designers.

“In London, there’s Henry Holland; I wear loads of his stuff. What else? I love Topshop, I love Moschino in Milan, and I love Bora Aksu. The way Aksu does panelling is quite unique and threads his collections together; I appreciate when anyone can keep a motif cohesive over time.”

In addition to music, 26-year-old Nicola also has a make-up range for pale skinned people – named Dainty Doll – and she reveals she puts a lot of time into making the products right for her market.

She told Rolling Stone: “I’m always working on new ideas for it – it can take months to decide on products, then five months for them to be produced. I’m pleased people have taken us on board and support the brand. Next, we’re hoping to extend our overseas market.”

By Andrea Petrou on October 12th, 2011

Taylor Swift has been named Billboard magazine’s Woman of the Year.

The 21-year-old singer is the youngest person ever to receive the award which has previously been held by performers including Beyonce Knowles, Reba McEntire and in 2010 Black Eyed Peas singer, Fergie.

Bill Werde, Billboard’s Editorial Director said: “Taylor has shown the power of good songwriting with music that has transcended genres, and we’re thrilled to acknowledge all of her successes over the past year by presenting her with the Billboard Woman of the Year Award.

“At the young age of 21, Taylor has already made a major impact on music and has been an incredible role model for aspiring singers/songwriters and young women everywhere. I look forward to watching her career continue to flourish in the years to come.

The annual event, now in its sixth year, celebrates the most powerful and talented women in the music business, coinciding with the publication of Billboard’s Women in Music Power Players list.

This year’s event will take place on Friday, December 2 at Capitale in New York City, where Taylor will receive her award.

Mary Portas agrees with ShinyStyle and says Duchess Catherine does not have a particularly good sense of fashion

By Andrea Petrou on October 12th, 2011

Duchess Catherine has had her sense of style slammed by shopping expert Mary Portas.

The flame-haired television personality – who is renowned for her strong sense of style, punctuated with covered arms, big shoulders and statement colours – has echoed what we at ShinyStyle were saying months ago – she does not think Catherine, who was recently asked to pose for the cover of US Vogue, has a particularly good sense of fashion.

She said: “I think Duchess Catherine has done an incredible job globally, but I do not know how you can say she is a fashion icon. I just don’t get that.”

When asked what does make an icon, she responded: “A unique sense of style. End of. Don’t you think?”

However, the British royal is not the only star to come under Mary’s fire – she also thinks Cheryl Cole’s time in Los Angeles, where she was a judge on the US version of ‘X Factor’ for four auditions, was misaligned.

She said to Heat magazine: “That was really wrong wasn’t it? There was that massive hair and then the tiny body. It was really just a wrong move.”

Giles Deacon wants to dress One Day actress Anne Hathaway and Hollywood icon Lauren Bacall

By Andrea Petrou on October 12th, 2011

Giles Deacon would love to dress Anne Hathaway.

The British designer – who has previously worked with Kelly Brook and Victoria Beckham in the past – is keen to work with the One Day beauty because he likes her look.

He said: “We’ve never dressed Anne Hathaway. She has an amazing presence and I think she’s a pretty good actress.

Anne is not the only star the 41-year-old sartorialist is particularly keen to work with, with Lauren Bacall named as his all-time style icon.

He said: “Lauren Bacall would be really interesting to dress. She’s a Hollywood legend and was married to Humphrey Bogart, so you wouldn’t mess with her. She’d let you know very clearly what she has after and you’d willingly do it.”

Discussing his own style, Giles admits he loves to splash out on designer suits.

He added to Now magazine: “I’m terrible at buying things for myself. As you can tell, I dress a bit like a tramp!I really like Yves Saint Laurent men’s suits and Tom Ford suits and ties. I’d really love a Tom Ford dressing gown. That’d be worth maxing out my credit card.”

Rachel Bilson to be a celebrity shoe designer for BeachMints

By Andrea Petrou on October 10th, 2011

Rachel Bilson has joined BeachMint.

The actress will be a celebrity designer alongside her stylist, Nicole Chavez, for a new branch of the e-commerce brand, ShoeMint, which will see her create a range of affordable shoes.

She told WWD: “I loved the idea of designing really cute shoes that are affordable and accessible. The whole idea behind the BeachMint brand makes the online shopping experience so personal.”

While Rachel has experience in the fashion sphere, including a collaboration with DKNY Jeans, her BeachMint collaboration will be her first foray into shoe design.

Rachel follows in the footsteps of Kate Bosworth and her stylist, Cher Coulter, who launched a accessories collection for JewelMint, Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen’s StyleMint and Jessica Simpson’s BeautyMint.

Kate was a “guinea pigs” for BeachMint’s business model with her range, but was confident of its success, as she was allowed to work with quality pieces.

She said: “I feel like we’re just starting to get a really good hold on this experience.

“I had no interest in signing a contract that would force me to curate pieces I found horrendous.”

BeachMint is a members only site which means it requires registrations before offering its users a monthly selection of merchandise based on their own tastes, and all available at a set price. All ShoeMint shoes will cost $79.99.

Glee star Lea Michele makes her own red carpet style

By Andrea Petrou on October 4th, 2011

Lea Michele never listens to fashion advice.

The Glee actress says she was told by the show’s creator, Ryan Murphy, not to wear black for her first Golden Globe Awards but decided against his tip.

She told InStyle.com: “Ryan Murphy had told me, ‘Don’t wear black. You should never wear black. So my stylist pulled floral, beautiful colours.”

“As I’m walking to the bathroom to try them on, I see the Oscar [de la Renta] dress hanging up in her closet. I said ‘I’m wearing that.’ And I called Ryan, and said ‘Ryan, I’m wearing black!’ ”

However, it seems Ryan wasn’t upset about Lea not taking his advice as he recently praised her fashion choices.

He said: “When I met Lea, she was only sort of interested in clothes- but in the last two years she’s become a red-carpet star. I think what happened is Lea went to an event, and someone said, ‘Oh, you look pretty.’ It was an interesting moment for her.”

Kate Bosworth has an “effortless approach” to style says her stylist

By Andrea Petrou on October 4th, 2011

Kate Bosworth has an “effortless approach” to fashion.

The stunning actress is often voted one of the world’s best-dressed women and her stylist, Cher Coulter, believes it’s because she has fun with what she wears and is willing to be risky.

Cher told People: “She’s got this effortless approach to style, and never overdoes it. She’s also fun and fashionable and willing to take risks. She’s simple, chic and always looks happy in what she’s wearing.”
Cher also says Kate can look good in both casual and smart clothes because she has the face and body to carry it off.

She said: “We like to get creative with current trends, but Kate has to feel good and comfortable.

“Kate loves denim because it’s easy and casual. She always wears denim to remain comfy while running around town. On the flip side, she also loves to dress up denim by pairing it with a silky button-up and a necklace slung just under the shirt collar. Kate’s a chameleon – she can wear anything!”

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen sell $39,000 alligator backpack from their collection and claim they want to dress Michelle Obama

By Andrea Petrou on October 4th, 2011

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s $39,000 alligator backpack was the first item to sell from their new handbag range.

The fashion design duo – who celebrated the luxury collection, which launched under their fashion label The Row, with a cocktail party at Paris store Montaigne Market – were thrilled with the sale of the controversial bag, with Ashley noting that luxury items perform well during uncertain economic times.

She told WWD: “It was the first thing that sold off the shelf. During our last economic crisis in the U.S., the only thing that went up was Hermes.”

Shoe designer Christian Louboutin spoke of his admiration for Mary-Kate and Ashley’s collection and revealed he feels protective of the twins.

He said: “I feel very much like a godfather to them. I adore them both. They are very cute and very clever.”

Averyl Oates, buying director for Harvey Nichols, who stock The Row, recently claimed the success of the label is due to its “timeless generational appeal”.

She explained: “The label carries timeless generational appeal while still remaining directional.

“Mary-Kate and Ashley recently achieved their ambition of dressing Michelle Obama. Lauren Hutton has also worked with the brand and I think the ageless appeal lies with the fact that the collection has a crystal-clear DNA.”

Pictures: Rihanna’s Madame Tussauds waxwork model

By Andrea Petrou on October 3rd, 2011

You know you’ve made it when you get a covert spot in Madame Tussauds, so we assume Rihanna must be on cloud nine following the unveiling of her waxwork doppelganger.

Unlike some of the models at the museum, RiRi’s waxwork, which takes centre stage in the interactive Music Zone alongside Britney Spears, Kylie Minogue, Lady Gaga and the late Amy Winehouse, is a good resemblance to the star.

And it also shows off her sexy style perfectly,  with a long black dress complete with raunchy side split, which the star wore to perform her duet with Matt Cardle on the UK final of ‘The X Factor’ last year. Her look was finished off with the statement RiRi red hair.

The figure took four months to complete and cost £150,000.

SATC stylish Patricia Field says: “Style doesn’t need to cost”

By emilyborrett on August 16th, 2011

Patricia is most famous for her work styling Sex and The City

The notoriously fabulous Sex and the City stylist Patricia Field advises aspiring fashionistas that good style doesn’t necessarily equal huge amounts of money.

Field says that anyone can have  style on a budget; they just need to find the right style to suit them. “Style is not the equivalent of money. Some people have lots of money and no style – some people have no money and lots of style. Style comes from a different choice – it comes from your philosophy and your job patterns and how you feel. I mean my life is very heavily around people much younger than myself. Young people, they don’t have a lot of money but the young people are the ones with the style. Young people have energy, and old people do not – and that energy translates into interests and getting information – and from all of that you can work out your style.”

The stylist says that the key secret to a stylish wardrobe is having a few classic, staple pieces – the pieces depending on the wearer. She said: “In anyone’s wardrobe there are those key pieces for them that they can’t live without. I could talk about myself, or somebody specific, but in general I would say that the more variation that you offer yourself in your wardrobe – the more combinations you will be able to create because you have more options.”

More variety you say? Well in that case, Patricia, I’ll go and max out my Topshop card right now..
