Leighton Meester sues mother for spending money on surgery

By Andrea Petrou on July 26th, 2011

Leighton Meester is suing her mother for spending money that was intended for the actress’ siblings on cosmetic procedures.

The ‘Gossip Girl’ star has reportedly initiated a lawsuit against her mum Constance Meester for using cash she had sent to her younger brother and sister for plastic surgery, hair extensions and Botox injections.

According to court documents obtained by TMZ.com, Leighton was sending her mother – who allegedly “refuses” to work – $7,500 a month so she could provide care for the 25-year-old star’s younger brother Lex, who suffers from severe medical issues.

However, rather than using the money to provide essentials for the youngster, Constance – who gave birth to Leighton while serving time in Fort Worth Prison, Texas, for her role in a drug smuggling ring – was putting the cash towards a whole host of cosmetic procedures.

Claiming the pair had an oral contract guaranteeing Leighton would pay her mother $10,000 a month, Constance reportedly threatened to file a $3 million law suit against the brunette beauty unless she started handing over the cash.

With the star insisting no such conversation had been had, she is now keen for a judge to declare that there was never any contract – verbal or otherwise – between the family members.

Leighton has previously claimed her “eccentric” mother has “inspired” her throughout her life.

She said: “My mother Connie inspires me. She’s an amazing woman. When I was a kid I wanted to be an actress and she completely backed me. She is her own person, very eccentric, very individual.”

Woody Allen awarded $5million by American Apparel

The long-running feud between Woody Allen and American Apparel has finally been settled for a cool $5million.

The director sued the clothing retailer last year, after they used his image in advertising billboards without his authorization. American Apparel’s chief executive, Don Charney, argued that the image, which depicted Allen as a Hasidic Jew from Allen’s 1977 film, Annie Hall, was fair game.

On Monday, the case was put to bed when Allen was awarded $5million for violation of privacy, although he initially filed for $10million.

“It’s of course possible that by going through the trial a jury might have awarded me more money but this is not how I make my living and $5 million is enough to discourage American Apparel or anyone else from trying such a thing again,” Allen said.

Op-Ed: Designers suing Forever 21 for copyright infringement

By Andrea Thatcher on September 18th, 2007

At Anna Sui’s spring show, attendees were given a T-shirt in their gift bags that had an Old West style wanted poster printed on it with the words “Forever Wanted,” an image of the owners of Forever 21, and the Bible quote, “Thou shalt not steal.” The shirts were in reference to the lawsuit Sui has pending against Forever 21. Sui claims that the retailer has been copying her looks since 2005 without her permission. Other designers, like Diane von Furstenberg and Gwen Stefani, are in litigation with the store as well, and are lobbying congress, trying to get a bill passed protecting their designs under copyright laws.
