Kate Hudson is Dannii Minogue’s summer style icon

By Andrea Petrou on July 11th, 2011

Kate Hudson is Dannii Minogue’s summer style icon.

The Australian star loves the “relaxed” look of the ‘Fool’s Gold’ actress – who gave birth to a baby boy over the weekend – and says the blonde beauty is the ideal poster girl for her Project D fashion line.

She explained: “Kate Hudson is our Project D icon for relaxed boho summer chic.

“She makes me want to run around in a maxi dress on an island, and dream of looking as healthy and relaxed as she seems to be 24/7.”

Dannii is also an admirer of ‘Horrible Bosses’ actress Jennifer Aniston and the newest member of the British royal family, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge.

She explained: “Jennifer Aniston always has the ultimate glowing summer skin, year round. How does she do it?

“We all want to look as good as Catherine does in a bikini – and if we did, that’s all we would wear.”

Dannii plans to take inspiration from Kate when she hosts a barbecue this summer.

She told Britain’s Glamour magazine: “The 1970s are huge this season, and a 70s-style maxi dress with flip-flops is the perfect combo for outdoor entertaining.

“The flats are ideal for drifting around the garden on a sunny afternoon and you can hitch up your dress while sitting on the lawn to get some sun on your legs.”

Shiny loves: Sexy one-piece bathing suits for summer

Lace Print Plunge Suit

This sexy neon swimsuit reminded us so irresistibly of Christopher Kane's Spring/Summer '11 collection that we just had to feature it. You can find it on Asos.

I don’t know about you, but now it’s summer I’m starting to get the annual pre-bikini anxiety that always leaves me fretting, frantically doing sit-ups and smothering myself in Fake Bake the night before I go on holiday. Ever since I was old enough to wear one, bikinis have caused me absolutely nothing but stress and woe. Sometimes I wish they had never been invented. So I’m deciding to stick two middle fingers up to two-piece peer-pressure this summer for something I can feel a little bit more comfortable in. Today at Shiny we’re going to be looking at one-pieces, which apparently are sexy again – THANK GOD.

I love the high street’s new flux of swimsuits available because they are so much more forgiving than two-pieces – except now they’re sexy as well as functional. The first swimsuit I laid my eyes on in my search for flattering swimwear just happened to be a gorgeous yellow lace-effect costume from Asos.com which reminded me of Christopher Kane’s neon lace dresses and skirt suits – so on trend this summer, and kind to curvy and skinny girls alike. The result is a modern, contemporary design that has just the right of sexiness for me.

Another favourite from my search was a gingham strapless costume from Frost French that reminded me of old photographs of Marilyn Monroe on the beach. It’s a very vintage-feel design that will hide any stray tummy wobbles, but emphasise your hips and waist so that you can cut  a bombshell figure on the beach. I have to say that I love fifties-inspired swimwear but I don’t like time-warp head-to-toe dressing – keep your beach look modern with some contemporary sunglasses and leather sandals

What do you think about the comeback of the one-piece? Do you think it’s fantastic that they’re back in vogue or do you think they should stay a thing of the eighties? Check out the gallery above and let us know.

Gwyneth Paltrow shares summer tips

By Andrea Petrou on May 19th, 2011

Gwenyth Paltrow has revealed her tips for versatile summer looks.

The ‘Iron Man’ actress – who has children Apple, seven, and Moses, five, with husband Chris Martin – has picked out for key pieces for the coming season, with tips on wearing them from day into night.

Writing in her GOOP newsletter, she wrote: “Dressed Up – Wear a long jersey dress with a silk blazer and statement sandals.

“Casual -Add a pop of colour with a neon tank underneath.”

The 37-year-old beauty’s next pick for the season was a beige Etoile Isabel Marant jacket.

She wrote alongside the garment: “The Short Flirty Jacket. Dressed Up – Take a jean skirt to work with high heel sandals, a statement jacket, and a satchel instead of a briefcase.

“Casual – The jacket travels poolside with a bright bikini and white jean shorts.”

Gyyneth went on to offer tips for accessorising a blue and white print Etoile Isabel Marant dress.

She said: “Dressed Up – Give a flowing printed dress some structure with a menswear-inspired blazer, a boxy purse and a leather belt.

“Casual – Mix your prints with a flowered dress, animal-inspired shoes and a striped sweater.”

Trend Alert: Top five sleeveless denim jackets and gilets

By Andrea Petrou on June 22nd, 2010

It’s conquered the highstreet, been spotted on celebs and made a huge appearance on the SS2010 catwalks and the denim trend doesn’t seem to be fading out anytime soon.
We’ve covered shorts, playsuits and skirts in this trend before, but one that we haven’t mentioned is the 80s style sleeveless denim jackets and gilets.

They are everywhere offering a range of different styles from cropped to loose, dark indigo to bleached and from bold buttons to poppers meaning there’s a style to suit any taste.

And the best thing about these is that they go with just about anything in your summer wardrobe.

Team up over a maxi dress for a 70s hippy look or over a plain tee and skirt for a casual take. Those feeling brave can also opt for one of these over a bikini for a day and a beach or a night out abroad.

Let’s not forget festivals here either. Team up with cowboy boots and shorts (denim if you’re brave enough to give a nod to the double denim trend) or with a short boho style frock for that perfect festival look.
