Gallery: Last-minute summer holiday outfits

Outfit 1. Topshop Blue Peony Print Silk Shorts

For a hot holiday lunch out these elegant high-waisted Topshop shorts are an elegant base to build an outfit.

The end of summer isn’t too far away now, and August is the last month of year where we jet off somewhere far hotter in the hopes of coming back skinnier with a tan. Yesterday I was looking at the fashion dilemmas we face during the summer’s wedding season, but today it’s all about the last-minute holiday.

Normally when I go on holiday I pack my entire wardrobe, only to wear the same thing for the entire week because I’ve realised I hate all my summer clothes. Next time I’ve decided I’m going to invest in a few pieces that will see me right for the week, and be adaptable for different occasions.

The Topshop silk blue shorts in the first outfit above are absolutely perfect. Wear them with a lightweight blouse for European elegance on holiday, or with a tuxedo jacket and heels for parties this Autumn. Another favourite find are the mocha-coloured palazzo pants in outfit number two, which will still be wearable next season. The seventies trend is still going strong!

Check out the gallery above for three ideal holiday outfits.

Nicole Richie owns over 200 pairs of sunglasses

By Andrea Petrou on April 19th, 2011

Nicole Richie owns over 200 pairs of sunglasses.

The reality TV star-turned-designer – whose House of Harlow accessories line carries the eyewear – is often voted one of the world’s most stylish women and admits she has a huge number of shades to help accessorise her fashionable outfits.

She told Teen Vogue magazine: “I view them as fun masks to accessorise your face. In my defence, I make sunglasses, so I have to research-shop, and I own every pair I’ve ever designed.”

Nicole is well known for her signature bohemian look and says she relies on extras to transform her wardrobe staples of jeans and a T-shirt into something special.

She explained: “You change the look with accessories. And by accessories, I mean sunglasses, head scarves, shoes, bed jackets.

“I’m always missing that in-between layer. On the West Coast, you don’t need a full jacket, but you want something more than just a tank.”

The designer also creates footwear but says because she is only 5ft 2in she is more interested in comfort than style.

She said: “Comfort takes precedence for me. These are super-high, but because they have a built-in platform, they don’t feel like it.

“I am not that girl who can do super-arched heels. All the shoes I design have a cushion and a platform.”

Floral Cat's Eye Sunglasses

Picture 1 of 8

Full-on glamour is the trend rocking the catwalks at the moment - we love how this Asos pair has a modern twist to a classic shape. Buy them, love them, wear them with everything.

Glory be, how great is this Mediterranean weather? I actually got a little bit sunburnt yesterday when I spent a long day on the grass with friends (I was supposed to be doing university work, but who can work in weather like this? We have to take advantage when it might be snowing or something next week.) And so, to thank this weather that’s winging it’s way over from Spain, apparently – thanks, Spain – we’re looking at one of summer’s most important fashion item, sunglasses.

Luckily for you readers there’s an absolute abundance of cool eyewear on the market at the moment, thanks to the inspirational catwalks of designers such as Henry Holland, Jil Sander and Prada, where eye-popping colour, futuristic shapes and glamourpuss styles were key. Our absolute favourite style of sunnies this season is the 50′s cat’s-eye sunnies, which have made a huge comeback, and will add a touch of glamour to any outfit this summer.

Crank up the eighties vibes with Polaroid’s new sunglasses range

By Elaine LaPersonerie on July 19th, 2010

Polaroid Papillion P8945B (1)lr (1)2.jpg All you need to know about Polaroid’s new sunglasses collection is made clear in the picture, left. Look at how happy she is! She’s young, fun, and probably on a boat dancing with Duran Duran! Probably. This is what Polaroid eyewear is all about; glamorous, retro, eighties-inspired power dressing for your peepers. Think Spandeau Ballet, Los Angeles, rich kids in convertibles and John Hughes movies.

The Polaroid frames come in a butterfly-palette of bold, bright colours and rich golds for that authentic “80′s America” look. Rent a Cadillac, pop on their classic Polaroid Aviator shades and some eighties tunes and BAM! You’re re-living your favourite teen movie.

The prices are genuinely pretty decent for designer sunnies – the prices start at approximately fifty pounds and are never more than eighty, which is a fair deal cheaper than what some of us shell out for Dior or Chanel. Check the gallery below to see a few of our favourites from the new Polaroid collection – I’m coveting the classic tortoiseshell wayfarer frames.

If your holiday is coming up really, really soon and you’re in a jam about where to get your sunnies from, don’t worry- the Polaroid range is going to be on sale on planes, cruises and airports everywhere as well as online.

ShinyStyle Watch: Madonna’s MDG sunglasses ad campaign

By Andrea Petrou on June 1st, 2010

Madonna’s campaigns with D&G have become well known throughout the fashion industry and if you’re a regular reader you would have seen our previews of the AW2010 ads featuring the star.

A few months ago we bought you the news that Madge had gone a step further with the Italian designer brand and collaborated with it to co-design an eyewear range. And we’ve been lucky enough to get hold of the ad video, which of course she stars in, for you to check out.

The singer poses with, and gets a little bit saucy, with male model, Tyson Ballou, for the MDG logo sunglasses vid shot by Steven Klein. We doubt this is the last we’ll be seeing of the star.

Is Lady Gaga creating a sunglasses range?

By Andrea Petrou on March 26th, 2010

Lady Gaga Hat

Get ready for weird and wacky sunnies ladies

If the rumour mill is to be believed Lady Gaga will be desgining a range of these and we know they aren’t going to be sensible.

According to WWD the singer, who wore sunglasses made from rows of lit cigarettes in her “Telephone” video, is said to be in talks with London designer Linda Farrow about collaborating on designs.

Now we’re not sure how true this rumour is but we’ve done a bit of detective work and the clues all seem to hint that there could be some truth in the story. Lady G has said she wants to launch a fashion line of her own “at some point.”

And Linda Farrow is no stranger to working with celebs. Last month she launched sunglasses designed by singer Róisín Murphy last month, and has created sunglasses for designers including Alexander Wang, Matthew Williamson and Dries Van Noten.

Watch this space girls.

SS2010 trends: Summer Sunglasses

By Andrea Petrou on March 18th, 2010

The sun’s been shining all week, and after the dismal few months many of us are embracing it by dusting out those spring tops, and re-stocking our wardrobes with the latest spring trends (sorry credit card).

One essential item for this season is of course sunglasses. And although we know many of you are thinking it’s a tad early, we’ve seen a good few ladies already sporting these to shield their eyes from the rays.

This season’s sunnies are all about aviator styles, pinks and of course florals. Go with one of these styles to fit in with the trends, or opt for a classic designer pair, think Chanel, Vivienne Westwood or Madonna’s latest range for D&G, that will keep you going throughout the next few years.

We’ve put together a gallery of sunnies to help you out, but remember, it’s not cool to wear these when you’re on the tube, in a club or anywhere else there’s no sun. Unless of course you’re a hip-hop star or rapper in training.

Armani relaunches it’s website

By Andrea Petrou on February 4th, 2010
Paris Fashion Week Haute Couture S/S 2010 - Giorgio Armani Prive - Runway

With the cold weather continuing to bite and the rain not looking like its going to pass anytime soon, heading out the the highstreet isn’t looking too appealing.

In the past many of us have coped by buying the latest fashions from one of the huge range of online stores.

However, for those who like the designer delights of Bond Street, choices have been limited, until now that is.

Armani has just relaunched its website, bringing all it’s collections together and offering the chance to buy some beauty and fashion items as well as watches and branded mobile phones online.

Log onto the site and you’ll find Giorgio Armani, Emporio Armani, Armani Collezioni, Armani Jeans, Armani Exchange, Armani Junior and Armani Casa.

And you’ll also be able to view and comment on the collections through a dedicated Facebook page and YouTube channel.

We think this is a genius idea, but we think we may have to find an equally clever place to hide our purses and credit cards.

Get Lauren Conrad’s Karen Walker ‘Annie’ sunnies

By Andrea Thatcher on September 6th, 2008

lauren_conrad_karenwalker_annie_sunglasses.jpg

From our handbag blog, TheBagLady: We know The Hills star Lauren Conrad gets very attached to certain things in her wardrobe (her Chanel quilted tote for one) and can sometimes find it hard to change it up or replace the old favourites.

Right now the accessory that is finding pride of place in her accessory cupboard (aside from her ‘Lauren’ name ring) are her Karen Walker ‘Annie’ shades in tortoiseshell, which she has been wearing for months on end now. These are a popular style from the designer’s first eyewear collection (TheBagLady’s Kelly has them in black) which she is bringing back this season in two new colours – the tortoiseshell as seen on Lauren and a cream/chocolate combination.

If you’re headed somewhere beachy but want to look more fashionable than freshman amongst the spring breakers, here’s our outfit picks. It’s always a good idea to stick with a simple color palette when packing for a short trip to maximize combinations. We went with the whites and greens of J.Crew’s trastevere halter bikini, $110, - our focal point for this look.

Why are sunglasses so expensive?

By Andrea Thatcher on December 3rd, 2007

Bulgari%20sunglasses.jpg

Nonprescription sunglasses sales totalled $2.12 billion last year with 112 million pairs sold, but they’re largely a very small, very plastic accessory. While the vast majority of sunglasses sold cost less than $30, the remaining 11 million pairs make up more than half of the business. I doubt anyone’s surprised, having seen price tags like the one on the Bulgari pair at left which retail for $650. But what’s the deal?

Britney Spears in Oversized Sunglasses and Headwraps

By Andrea Thatcher on August 27th, 2007

britney%20sunglasses%20headband.jpgnicole%20richie%20headscarf.jpg
Take a look at Britney Spears on the cover of US Weekly. She went from Haute Mama to Hot Mess with her oversized sunglasses and headscarf. Nicole Richie is also working the headscarf and oversized sunglasses look. A little accessorizing is cool, but these otherwise pretty girls are covering up their beauty with way too much of a good thing.
