Zooey Deschanel wears tights all year round

By Andrea Petrou on July 13th, 2011

.

The 31-year-old beauty – who is one of the faces of Rimmel make-up alongside Kate Moss and Sophie Ellis Bextor – does not worry about the climate when putting on her hosiery because she wears them as a “safety blanket” and it means she can do cartwheels whenever she likes.

She said: “I am a year round tights girl. I will wear tights even if it is 100 degrees outside. Tights are my safety blanket.

“In them, I know I do a sweet row of cartwheels anytime, anywhere, without anyone catching a glimpse of my knickers.”

However, the actress-and-singer is troubled by the issue of “bunchy” tights too big for her skinny ankles, and wants more manufacturers to consider the plight of smaller women.

She added: “My biggest complaint with tights is that they do not accommodate skinny-ankled people like myself. We are tired of being judged for having bunchy tights. We don’t want to be held accountable for our lazy stockings!

“If you’re listening, hear our skinny ankle pleas, and make some tights with a little more snap around our well turned heels.”

Despite being known for her delicate features, Zooey has previously confessed she doesn’t always want to play “pretty” characters in movies.

She said: “I like getting to be unselfconscious – I don’t really feel so comfortable playing just, like a pretty girl.”

The best party tights to wear this winter

Strictly Come Dancing is back on our screens for the winter, and the spangly, over-the-top silliness of the outfits are beginning to slowly creep into both our hearts and our wardrobes. Whereas in the summer we’d have scoffed at all the sequins and sparkles, and said “No thankyou, I’ll stick to my maxi-dress”, we’re beginning to find ourselves idly wondering if we could get away with wearing “boobs ahoy” gowns, cut-out panels and lurid shades of fluoro to the office party. It’s the problem with winter – we have a tendency to over-decorate ourselves and end up looking like the Christmas lights display in Oxford Circus.

And no, you probably shouldn’t start dressing like Kara Tointon (or Ann Widdecombe, for that matter), but that doesn’t mean you have to go totally the other way and start dressing like a middle-aged German nanny. Just strike a little balance – my favourite way to get a little of Strictly spangle the understated way this winter is to jazz up a more classic outfit with a pair of statement tights, which bring back fond memories of dressing up little-girl style for the Year Six school disco but is still fashion forward.

The best ones available at the moment are from Scottish designer label Bebaroque, specialisers in fantastical “Alice In Wonderland”-style hosiery in candy colours, adorned with pearls and ankle detailing. Especially dreamy are their black tights with the white and gold bow detailing on the ankles – with tights that pretty, you can make any crummy old outfit look way prettier immediately. Unfortunately, with designer hosiery there comes a designer price, with some of their tights costing up to a cool £75. If you don’t feel like investing that much in something that could potentially ladder, there are good versions on the high street – personal favourites are the gold embellished ones from Zohara and the super-sexy mock suspender fishnet stocking tights from Topshop, which will have the boys howling and drooling at your feet. Get the look: Pixie Lott’s ballerina style shoes

By Andrea Petrou on March 25th, 2010

Pixie 1.jpg

We love Pixie Lott’s sassy and kooky fashion sense, which unlike Lady Gaga’s style can be worn almost everyday.

One example of this are these gorgeous Aruna Seth black flats the singer was spotted wearing to the Ivy this week.

We heart the peep toe style, which givse a summer twist to traditional ballet pumps, and the crystal butterfly.

Copy Pixie’s style and team up with shorts, tights and a blazer. Or wear with jeans for a spring daytime look.

However, a word of warning: Star style doesn’t come cheap as these shoes cost £365.

We think it may be time we sent our bank manager and credit card company some flowers….

Top ten alternatives to Henry Holland tights

By Andrea Petrou on August 18th, 2009

Now I know I should stay away from tights and brightly coloured ones at that, after my past fashion faux pas, which I admitted to you last week.

However, this week, we couldn’t resist telling you about Pixie Geldof’s new fashion look, bought on by flamboyan designer Henry Holland.

The up and coming fashion fellow has designed a collection of hosiery for Pretty Polly, which launched this week at Selfridges. And celebs, including Pixi Geldof and Agyness deyn are already covering their pins in his designs made from sheer and opaque fabrics.

These include his trademark purple, with a cream rhinestone-encrusted band around the thigh and mid calf, and a style he’s christened the “moc stock” which looks like a pair of stockings but is in fact a far more practical pair of tights.

The tights are a leg hugging £10 per pair. They are available from Selfridges now and nationwide from September.

However, for those that can’t get to the store or can’t wait that long we’ve put together a range of other alternatives, after all we can’t deny any longer that the tights season will be soon upon us, and dusting out last season’s ones might bring a few shocks.

Yay or Nay Wednesday: tights over tights

By Andrea Thatcher on December 10th, 2008

Yay or Nay Wednesday tights.jpg

In the winter, it becomes a little scarier to wear your open-weave or fishnet-type tights with the wind whipping your stems. So, the thing has become to wear these lower-coverage tights over a pair of opaques.

I was grappling with this question myself today (grey open-weave tights over black?) and was told that tights over tights screams “I think I’m sooo hip.” (I decided on maroon opaques, by themselves.)

So what do you think? Have you sported tights over tights to stay fashionable and toasty?

We love our tights, and they’re not going away anytime soon

By Andrea Thatcher on November 14th, 2007

Nanette%20tights.jpg

While traditional, waist-high tights have gone down in popularity, teens who grew up without having to wear pantyhose are now excited about patterned tights and the layering options hosiery provides, and are driving the market. It’s interesting how that now that the “bare legs at all costs” maxim has extended beyond Hollywood and New York, women, not just girls, really are excited about tights and they’ve become a much more prominent aspect of designer collections. And they’re not going away. President and CEO of The Hosiery Association Sally F. Kay, says ’70s and ’80s retro styles will be hot for spring. Color will still be popular but instead of obvious shine we’ll be seeing more subdued, burnished effects like openwork lace, crochet, and basketweave. Nanette Lepore’s plum-colored tights, left, are an example of the dress and tights look that will remain popular in 2008.
