Claws at the ready: A meeting with Taylor Momsen leaves Tim Gunn less than impressed

By Andrea Petrou on September 15th, 2010

By Emily Borrett.

What is it with Taylor Momsen at the moment? If she’s not having a go at fellow singers or stomping around miserably in her stripper heels and leather jacket, she’s trying the patience of her fellow celebrities. The latest disgruntled celebrity is the kind, twinkly-eyed gay uncle of fashion Tim Gunn, who was appalled by her sulky behaviour when he appeared in a cameo role on the set of Gossip Girl.

Anyone who watches Project Runway as much as I do that Tim Gunn is not an easy man to anger. In fact I don’t think I’ve ever seen him lose his rag at a designer, ever – the closest he gets to ticking anyone off is peering over his glasses like Anne Robinson and uttering to a hopelessly disorganised designer his favourite catchphrase: “Make it work.” And even then it’s not remotely threatening.

So Momsen must have been really bad for Gunn to label the actress as “pathetic” and “a diva”. The television stylist let off steam afterwards to E! Online, saying, “She was pathetic, she couldn’t remember her lines, and she didn’t even have that many. I thought to myself, ‘Why are we all being held hostage by this brat?’”

When asked what he’d like to say to the stroppy starlet he replied, “I’d say, ‘You know, young lady, there are hundreds of thousands of girls who are just as attractive and even smarter than you. Why are you acting like this show is a huge burden on you?’” Well, you know when Tim Gunn uses the term “young lady”, that you’re in serious trouble. He should send Taylor to her room ’til she’s ready to say sorry.

Project Runway to go more mass market for Lifetime?

By Andrea Thatcher on July 30th, 2008

Project Runway copy.jpg

As word trickles in that Nina Garcia is starting to settle in to her new post as fashion director at Marie Claire, the rumor that the magazine will replace Elle as partner for Project Runway is gaining momentum.

Sources have said that Garcia’s requests for high-fashion items for Marie Claire fashion spreads are increasingly at odds with the magazine’s more mass-market sensibility. This would also seem true of the partnership with Project Runway.

Between the move to L.A., the switch to Lifetime, and the addition of Marie Claire, will Project Runway continue be the fashion juggernaut we’ve all come to love? At least all the stars – Garcia, Michael Kors, Tim Gunn and Heidi Klum - have signed on to jump networks with the program.

Are you ready for season five of Project Runway tonight?

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on July 16th, 2008

Project Runway season 5.jpg

If you’re saying “what? Project Runway starts tonight?” that’s probably because Bravo has conspicuously foregone it’s traditional media blitz and non-stop marathons used to promote new seasons.

Could it be because of the ongoing legal issues surrounding the show’s move to Lifetime for season 6? Probably.

But there is news to be had – for goss on possible guest judges and challenges, keep reading.

Project Runway finale party

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on March 6th, 2008

Project Runway party.jpg

The final three: Jillian Lewis, Rami Kashou and Christian Siriano got pretty silly for the photographers at the TRESemme Project Runway Finale Party held inside the Tribeca Grand Hotel on yesterday in New York City.

I guess they worked really hard and now it’s time to party hard, even the staid Tim Gunn got into the wacky spirit of the evening, as you can see in photos after the jump. You can also read what Tim thought of the outcome in his blog.

Project Runway – the final three!

By Andrea Thatcher on February 27th, 2008

Rami.jpg

It’s always very interesting, and sometimes very telling, to see Tim Gunn visit the designers at their homes during their final design phase on Project Runway.

Christian’s apartment/studio is ridiculously small, and would so fit into the mythology of the young struggling designer who makes big. His designers were very big, very dramatic, very what you would expect. I don’t know about those feather pants. That’s no typo: feather, not leather.

Project Runway avant garde challenge

By Andrea Thatcher on January 16th, 2008

Winners.jpg

This was a really interesting challenge because we rarely get to see the designers on Project Runway create something that doesn’t really have to be wearable, that is supposed to be avant garde. So many designers on this show act like that’s what they really want to do – couture! high fashion! avant garde! – and yet when they get the chance they often freak out or fall flat.

And then, as if that wasn’t enough, they have to create a ready-to-wear look as well! Christian looked like he might stab Tim Gunn with his scissors. We empathize with his sentiment “I wanted to throw up, omigod I was so pissed.” We understood the point, what Tim Gunn said about this being what real designers have to do – create high art as well as something commercially viable.

Keep reading to see how it went and – SPOILER ALERT – the winner and loser.

futurefashion%20book.jpg

The fashion industry is abuzz about the new book FutureFashion White Pages and with contributors like Diane von Furstenberg, Barneys New York’s Julie Gilhart, Steven Kolb of the Council of Fashion Designers of America, Tim Gunn and models Shalom Harlow and Elettra Wiedemann fashion fans are sure to follow. The book is published by Earth Pledge and its goal is to promote renewable, reusable and nonpolluting methods of design. They also hope to encourage retailers to carry more earth-friendly products when they realize that consumers really are demanding them.

Runway Recap: Project Runway gets underway – spoilers ahead!

By Andrea Thatcher on November 15th, 2007

PR%20image.jpg

Project Runway is auf and running, and some stereotypical personalities have already been defined – not to mention frontrunners for the prize. This year? To have your collection sold on Bluefly.com (shoppers win either way!), a feature in Elle magazine (Judge Nina Garcia’s home tome), $100,000 to start their own line and a car (in New York? Why?). Guest judge Monique Lhuillier added her expertise to the panel this week, so we’re excited to see who else they get. We’ll be revealing some spoilers each week in the column so if you’ve haven’t watched the night before’s episode, it’s best to keep scrolling. If you saw the show and are eager to discuss, or just don’t mind being spoiled – keep reading for more photos and our recap.

By Andrea Thatcher on November 12th, 2007

season%204.jpg

Season 4 of Project Runway premieres on Wednesday, have you checked out the new designers yet? There’s Chris, who seems like a combination of Jay and Austin. There are a few Parsons graduates: Jillian, Marion, and Simone. Maybe they’ll go up against FIT kids Kit and Kevin. There are definitely more smirky smiles than genuine grins with this group, so watch out! Be sure to check back after every episode for our recap of the design and drama! The judges say we’ll be surprised with some of their choices this season.

Guiding subjects into style with Tim Gunn

By Andrea Thatcher on September 14th, 2007

tim_veronica.jpg
Quite possibly my new favorite show on TV. Tim Gunn’s Guide to Style is on Bravo at 10 p.m. ET/PT every Thursday night. This isn’t a show that barges in, remakes you and leaves you in so-so fashions good for one season only. Fashionister Tim Gunn and sidekick former model Veronica Webb enter in ‘verbal agreements’ with his subjects to help them find what is a great style for them, because, as Tim says, style comes from within. The clients use clothes that are theirs, with a few alterations, and they do get a few new amazing clothes selected for the body shape and size. I love that Tim uses a computer to input the sizes of the subjects, then ‘dresses’ them in the clothes they had to keep, thus showing why a particular article of clothing is better (or worse!) than another style.
