Ahh, the cover-up. A far less exciting term when it’s applied to clothes than to TV murder cases, cover ups are the maiden aunt of summer fashion – cumbersome and not much fun, but if you don’t invite them to the party you know it’ll end in the cold shoulder.
When the vast majority of all spring/summer frocks are frustratingly sans sleeve, the cover-up suddenly becomes your goosepimpled arms’ only refuge post-6pm. Or, let’s face it, anytime after the flush of your morning dash-about has cooled and you’ve remembered it’s only actually hot enough for bare arms in the UK about 3.5 days a year, half of which you’ll spend leaning over a freezer cabinet in Londis trying to extract the last un-melted Twister.
And so on you plod through the endless parade of cardigans and blazers and denim jackets, feeling dowdier and a bit more like Lorraine Kelly with every one, until autumn arrives and you can put a proper coat on again. Unless, that is, UNLESS, you find something dazzlingly awesome and build your outfit around it instead – less cover-up, more ‘I guess convention dictates I wear something under this, but gee, do I have to?’
Enter the kimono. Voluminous, fringed and tie-dye, this Topshop number is both a scene-stealer and a multitasker supreme. Belt it over a black jersey maxi, throw it on with rolled-up jeans, make like the model on the website and wear it over a bikini or just swap it for your dressing gown and lie around on a chaise lounge all day smoking cigarillos and talking to everybody in a Marlene Dietrech voice.
The tie-dye print even makes it look a bit like a thundery British sky, which is fitting. Last year’s bobbly cardigans will tremble in its wake. Cover-up: covered.

Still waiting for your prints charming? From tribal to tropical and even a touch of tie-dye, we’ve rounded up the loudest, proudest patterns around
Long gone are the days when ‘print’ meant a polite little floral or a prim polka dot. This summer we’re pretty much being commanded to bedeck ourselves out like our Nan’s conservatory sofa, so it would be rude not to go prints all the way (before they become ‘the art formerly known as prints’ and we have to cover ourselves in symbolic squiggles instead).
As a rule of thumb, if it would look good on a plastic cafe tablecloth then it’ll look GREAT on you this season. ‘Aztec’ and ‘tribal’ are still hanging about like an enthusiastic gap year student at a house party, but there are also ‘tropical’ (think Carmen Miranda), tie-dye (if you’re lucky you’ll still have the stuff you made at Brownie camp) neon paisley (think PG Wodehouse at a rave) and photo prints, which are like wearing an entire landmark destination on your arse. Not that your arse isn’t already a landmark destination, of course.
So here are our pick of the loud, the proud and the really rather busy. Extra marks for clashing them. Points deducted if you apologise for being “a bit bright”.

I’m currently suffering from something I like to term ‘Fash bag fatigue’.
Barely a day goes buy where I don’t open a magazine or click through a style site to be told, in no uncertain terms, that unless I’m saving up my council tax and muesli money for a tote I can carry a baby around in, I am missing a crucial fashion gene. It’s not that I can’t appreciate the quilty aesthetics of a Chanel 2.55, or a Mulberry tote, or even those satchels off the Google advert, but I’ve never managed to grasp the dreamy possibility behind the massive great throbbing price tag. Some see design and timeless craftsmanship – I just see a holiday or a Ford Focus swinging from the arms of the elite.
The Sunday supplements, bless their affluent hearts, have made it as far as realising that bags upward of a grand probably aren’t at the top of many women’s shopping lists, so they’ve started giving us bags for £500 instead. Which is marvellous if you’re one of those terrifying 23 year old hedge fund managers you occasionally read about in Vogue, or if your landlord has lapsed into a coma conveniently excusing you from paying any rent, but for the rest of us who don’t have a spare monkey in the bank yet still have to carry our stuff around, it’s not especially helpful.
So here, to prove they do still exist, are some seriously nice bags for under £100. Most are under £50. Some are under £30. Which, unless you plan to take inspiration from the late, great Nora Ephron, who announced that her perfect bag was a bright yellow and blue plastic MetroCard shopper from the Transit Museum in New York’s Grand Central Station (I Feel Bad About My Neck – And Other Thoughts About Being A Woman, 2007 – read it, it’s wonderful), is probably about the best we’re going to be able to do. But at least we can still afford muesli.
Note: I have included nothing from Urban Outfitters, because every bag I or my friends have ever bought from Urban Outfitters has always broken dramatically within three months. If you’ve got an UO bag that you’ve been lugging around unscathed for over a year, please do let me know.
Hardback doctor bag, £26.99 A-Shu.co.uk
Doctors can’t claim many professional style victories (word on the wards is they’re still wearing Crocs) but they do have some pretty tasty bag heritage. This cheap and cheerful take on the classic Gladstone from A-Shu.co.uk comes in a range of tasteful colours and will ensure that should you ever go to Gloucester in a shower of rain, you’ll be able to cart your brolly around in something stylish. NB: does not guarantee medical knowledge.

Topshop and PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) have joined forces draw attention to the treatment of exotic animals killed for their skins. The high street store has created a display at its flagship Oxford Street store in London.
The display, which can be seen in the shop’s main window today until Monday, 18 March, features a wardrobe with exotic animals spilling out and the caption “Keep Wildlife Out of Your Wardrobe”. It goes on to urge shoppers to visit PETA UK’s website to sign a pledge never to wear exotic skins.
“Topshop knows that the only place for exotic skins is on their original owners”, says PETA Senior Programme Manager Yvonne Taylor. “Through the years, Topshop has set the industry standard for promoting animal welfare, and its latest high-profile display at the heart of London’s busiest shopping street will help save many snakes, alligators and other animal victims of the fashion industry from an excruciatingly painful death.”
As shown in PETA US’ exposé of the exotic-skins trade – narrated by acclaimed actor Joaquin Phoenix – snakes, alligators and other exotic animals who are killed for their skins are commonly nailed to trees, bludgeoned with hammers and skinned alive. It often takes hours for the animals to die, usually from shock or dehydration. Nice.
PETA and Topshop have collaborated on several previous occasions to make it clear that they oppose the cruel fur and exotic-skins trades. Topshop was recently presented with a PETA-Approved Vegan Fashion Award in the category of Most Stylish Women’s Knitwear for the company’s trendy cream-and-lime jumper.

Most stylish handbag: Vivienne Westwood Derby bag (£500)
Consumers are becoming more aware and concerned about the origins of the products in their wardrobe, and fake fur, cruelty-free fabrics and pleather are fast becoming the go-to materials for those wanting to enjoy the latest fashion with a clean conscience. And everyone from high-street retailers such as Topshop and French Connection to high end designers like Vivienne Westwood and Stella McCartney are meeting consumer demand for animal-free fashion.
Animal welfare organisation PETA is recognising the best cruelty-free contributions to the fashion world with a new awards – the first ever PETA-approved Vegan Fashion Awards. The 2013 winners, which include French Connection (gadget accessory) and New Look (women’s outerwear) as well as Frost French (best purse) can be found above. Up-and-coming designer Bo Carter took home the accolade for Most Talented New Designer. As PETA notes: “Bo is part of a bright new wave of fashion talent who are shunning animal skins in their work. Bo always puts her principles first, so instead of bowing to industry pressure to use leather and fur, she expresses herself by creatively exploring the qualities of synthetic fabrics. The results are simply stunning: beautiful, original (and completely vegan) clothes.”
The awards mark the launch of PETA’s new logo, which designers and retailers can use to identify vegan clothes and accessories that they sell online or in stores.

I’m beyond excitement to be heading to this year’s Bestival with a good friend this coming weekend. This year things will get wild on the Isle of Wight as revellers descend in their wildlife outfits for a weekend of fancy dress and music, featuring acts like Florence + The Machine, The XX, Stevie Wonder, Sigur Ros, Emeli Sande and many more.
As expected, we started thinking about the theme a bit too late. And having spent last Sunday afternoon in Camden’s Escapades looking at butterfly, bees and sexy fairy costumes, we decided that full-on fancy dress was not for us.
Instead we’ve decided to inject some wildlife to our festival outfits by wearing these utterly fantastic SpiritHoods - from £102.

If you, like us want to take part in the dressing up without opting for the onesie tiger suit, here are four more animal motif pieces to inspire your Bestival fashion.

Leopard print caped playsuit / Topshop – £46.

A Wear Panda jumper / ASOS – £25.

Zebra bodycon dress / Forever 21 – £18.75

Ethically produced limited edition Bestival #Wildlife t-shirt / Rapanui – £20
Check out the lineup for Bestival 2012 here.

The highstreet is already stocking its rails in anticipation for the A/W season, and for once we’re praying for cold weather so we can start showing off the latest trends.
One look that’s set to be huge this season is fur. However, unlike previous seasons when thick faux fur coats made up the trend, this year is all about subtlety.
Hints of fur on tees as well as on hats, were key looks on the winter catwalks of Matthew Williamson, Chanel and Mulberry, while Topshop Unique incorporated the look into cute military style dresses.
The key to this season’s look? Less is more.
See the gallery below for the catwalk looks.

With autumn/winter 2012 styles hitting highstreet rails, now is the perfect time to grab yourself a summer bargain.
And if you look hard enough there’s some great classic items that can not only be worn through to the winter season but also next year too.
Topshop has some great bargains at the moment ranging from a pair of Baxter Jeans, which have been slashed from £40 to £20, while its sequined shift dress, which has been knocked down to £30 from the original £70 price tag, is a perfect keeper for that Christmas party season.

Despite mud and rain currently making the festival scene a mud bath, a gal still has to look her best at any event.
That’s why we heart Topshop’s range of festival wear, which will ensure you stay looking glam underneath that mud.
Our fave highstreet store has come up trumps thanks to its range of must-have festival denim shorts and sequined tops, which give a smart/cas look to any event. For those a little bit more practical there’s a huge range of waterproof coats and macs to choose from, while wellies, shoulder bags and backpacks complete the range.
We want…..

Topshop has launched its high summer 2012 collection, and as usual we heart every single piece in the range.
This season the highstreet store has gone right back to the 80s and early 90s offering us faded denim jeans, mini patterned ra-ra skirts and oversized tees.
There’s also printed leggings, faded denim waistcoats and dip dyed jeans to whet your fashion appetite.
If you’re a bit of a girls girl then there’s also a cute collection of little floral and vintage numbers all given an 80s twist thanks to the colour palate and structured bralets.

Yes, we know, we haven’t even got past Halloween yet, but when we spot a Christmas collection we can’t but help get excited.
And today it’s Topshop that’s got us all giddy with a whole range dedicated to the Christmas Party season. We heart the sequined dresses and tops as well as the Luxe jumpers and intricate beading.
And for those who want to go all vintage there’s also a few feathered pieces to choose from too. Roll on December.

Christian Louboutin’s career is to be the focus of new retrospective in London.
The French shoe designer – renowned for his use of a bright red under-sole on all of his footwear – will have much of his work on display at the British capital’s Design Museum from March 28 to July 1 2012.
In addition to documenting his life’s work, the retrospective will also offer viewers and insight into how he creates shoes, as well as his influences and original designs.
It will also contain images from the 2007 movie ‘Fetish’, made in collaboration between Christian and director David Lynch.
Last month Christian revealed he would be creating a book documenting his most iconic styles during his 20 year career.
The tome – which has yet to be named – will be divided into six chapters, including a personal biography and his collaborative work with the likes of Chanel and Yves Saint Laurent.
Some of Louboutin’s most treasured friends and models, including the likes of Dita Von Teese, Mika and Kristen Scott Thomas have also contributed to the tome.

The circus performers modelled high-street fashions for the launch of High Street Fashion Week

Today's prize up for grabs in assocation with High Street Fashion Week is this chic chakra bracelet worth £86. Read more below
High Street Fashion Week has gone off with a big, sparkly, ticker-tape rainbow bang as the beginning of the week’s celebration of fashion’s best high street stores was ushered in with circus performers and models scaling the sides of buildings in the latest fashions. We’d never thought that abseiling and stilettos would ever go hand-in-hand but hey, we love to be surprised.
High Street Fashion Week, which honours our much-beloved British high street in a week-long slew of fashion parties, meet and greets and sales, takes place in the shopping mecca which is Oxford Circus and will continue until Friday.
Today kicks off with an absolute monster sale in the Debenhams department store with 25% off in ALL THE DEPARTMENTS. AND IT’LL LAST ALL WEEK. There’s also a 10% discount at the Oxford Circus Benetton store when you spend £50 – it’s time to max out your store card, girls. Meanwhile, fashion sightseers should head on over to the John Lewis where they’re housing Osman Yousefzada’s latest collection.
One of the other good things about the High Street Fashion Week is their sensational giveaway prizes and competitions, which will be going on all week. If you want to channel your inner world traveller, enter the competition to get your mitts on this elegant gold chakra bracelet (pictured above left), which as well as being boho-chic is supposed to make the wearer “articulate, resonant of voice, a good listener and thrive on creativity”. That’s a good enough reason for us! Enter the competition on the website here.
