Some models go further than showcasing the trends of the day within their careers and actively change the fashion landscape with their own unique style. Here we champion three supermodels who have helped to define some of the most exciting eras in fashion history.

Twiggy:

Lesley Hornby, better known as ‘Twiggy’, was named as “the face of 1966” by the Daily Express after a fashion journalist from the paper spotted a photograph of her sporting a new crop in the window of Mayfair hairdresser The House of Leonard.

She was, the newspaper wrote “The Cockney Kid with a face to launch a thousand shapes”, and that she did. By 1967 she had modeled in France, Japan and the US, gracing the covers of Vogue and Tatler, and her arrival at JFK airport the same year warranted nearly 100 pages of coverage in The New Yorker.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s 2009 Catalogue of Style wrote about the model, who took her name from childhood nickname ‘twigs’, referring to her thin legs: “Twiggy’s adolescent physique was the perfect frame for the androgynous styles that began to emerge in the 10960s.

The trend was manifested in a number of templates sweet A-line dresses with collars and neckties and suits and dresses that took their details from military uniform”. Modeling these mini dresses, with exaggerated eye make-up and minimalistic shapes, Twiggy helped to create the ‘Mod’ style still big with fashion fans today.

Jerry Hall:

Originally from Texas, Jerry Hall was spotted by a fashion agent whilst sunbathing on a beach in Saint Tropez. The meeting was to act as the touch-paper to her rapid ascent into the glamorous world of fashion and music. In 1975, Jerry appeared as a mermaid on the cover of Roxy Music’s album Siren, and shortly afterwards became engaged to lead singer Bryan Ferry.

By the time she left Ferry for Mick Jagger in 1977, her celebrity status and larger-than-life beauty had landed her the cover shot on 40 magazines worldwide, as well as contracts with the likes of Revlon and YSL. Jerry’s long blonde hair, sculpted features and curvy, six-foot frame was a perfect fit for the conspicuous glamour championed at trendy New York nightspots Studio 54 and 21 Club.

Indeed, as well as big hair, the model is associated with slinky maxi dresses, jumpsuits, cut-out swimwear, pussy bow details and bling accessories, such as jewels and handbags – all of which are currently enjoying a fashion revival.

Kate Moss:

Discovered in JFK airport at the age of 14 by founder of Storm Model Management Sarah Doukas, Kate Moss shot to fame two years later in 1990 thanks to Corinne Day’s black and white ‘The 3rd Summer of Love’ shoot for The Face magazine.

The waif-like, Croydon model stood out in contrast to the tall and curvaceous supermodels of the time and, suiting the stripped back, grunge clothing style popular in the 1990s, brought about a move towards a more natural-looking, edgy-yet-minimalist beauty. Moss has fronted campaigns for the likes of Calvin Klein, Chanel and Gucci and also continues to influence high street fashion trends, from women’s coats to women’s shoes.

Most recently she has been one of the fashion icons behind the revival of the ‘boho-chic’ look, and can be credited for increasing the popularity of pirate boots, biker jackets, cut-off denim shorts, kaftans and maxi dresses.

Rosie Huntington-Whitely is set to star in the Autumn M&S campaigns

By emilyborrett on August 31st, 2011

Britain’s poutiest supermodel, Rosie Huntington-Whitely, is going to be the new face of Marks & Spencer’s Autumn ad campaigns alongside the Green Lantern star Ryan Reynolds.

The A-list twosome are going to front M&S’s Autograph collection, one of the department store’s many different clothing lines, though Autograph is one of the most fashion-forward ones. Rosie, who’s previously modelled in Burberry campaigns, said: “I feel proud to be associated with a British high street favourite that holds fond memories for so many people.”

The Canadian heart-throb Ryan also has a fond connection with the store and thinks of M&S with “nostalgia”. He said: “Going into an M&S store with my family or friends always gives me a beautiful pang of nostalgia. The Autograph collection is a modern take on the classic style I love and feel most comfortable wearing. The pieces in this collection are lasting staples that’ll never go out of style.”

The executive director of the store, Steve Sharp, was absolutely ecstatic to get the Hollywood pair to front the brand – we have to say that a Victoria’s Secret model and a Hollywood blockbuster hero is a bit of a step up from Myleene Klass and Danni Minogue dancing around in their pyjamas. He told MailOnline: “Rosie and Ryan are the perfect fit for Autograph – beautiful, exclusive and absolutely contemporary. On set, they worked together to deliver a mesmerising performance which allowed us to capture shots that literally sizzle with excitement and an air of mystery.”

Keep an eye out for these two on the telly – Marks & Spencer just got sexy.

First looks: Dannii Minogue in Marks and Spencer TV ad campaign

By Andrea Petrou on March 25th, 2010

Earlier this week we bought you the first few pictures of Dannii Minogue’s campaign for Marks and Spencer.

And last night we got all excited when we saw the yummy mummy to-be staring alongside the likes of Twiggy, VV Brown and Lisa Snowden in the TV ad.

However whilst we couldn’t keep our eyes off the floral and nautical themed outfits our other halves were watching intently for other reasons. We didn’t want you (or your man) to miss out so we had a little gander and found a video for you to watch. Take a look below for all the fashion fun. We’re sure you’ll agree it’s a must-have watch.

First looks: Dannii Minogue for Marks and Spencer

By Andrea Petrou on March 23rd, 2010

Dannii M&S1.jpg

A few months ago we got ourselves into a little bit of a tizzy after hearing the news that Dannii Minogue was going to pose alongside the famous faces of Marks and Spencer in its summer campaign.

So you can imagine how excited we were today, when we spotted the few first shots of the singer and X-Factor judge in her full M&S glory.

Joining iconic model Twiggy, Mylene Klass and Lisa Snowden, Dannii looks every inch a Mark’s girl posing in Jackie O sunglasses and shift dress as well as cute floral frocks. However there’s no sign of Dannii’s baby bump in any of these shots

We can’t wait till the range hits the shops in a few weeks.

Dannii Minogue confirmed as the new face of Marks and Spencer

By Andrea Petrou on February 9th, 2010

Dannii.jpg

Last month we reported on rumours that Dannii Minogue was going to be the new face of Marks and Spencer and guess what? She is.

The pregnant X Factor judge and singer will be appearing in the new spring campaign alongside current Marks and Spencer models Mylene Klass and Twiggy. She will also be joined by VV Brown, Brazilian supermodel Ana Beatriz Barros, and Lisa Snowdon.

However, it seems Dannii will not be following in Mylene’s footsteps and showing off her baby bump during the campaign, as the ads are being shot right now and are due to be revealed next month. We can’t wait.

Tyra Banks blames poor economy on firing Paulina Porizkova from ‘America’s Next Top Model’

By Kimberley Foster on May 20th, 2009

tyrabanks_paulinaporizkova_fired.jpgHas Paulina Porizkova become just another victim of the global economic crisis? That is what Tyra Banks is citing after the Czech model was fired as judge on America’s Next Top Model. The only problem is that Paulina doesn’t quite see it that way.

She revealed on the Late Late Show that she was fired because it was suggested that she had a big ego. She then insinuated on Access Hollywood that behind-the-scenes Tyra is a diva, who was consistently late to set and only spoke to her in front of the cameras. Now, Tyra has responded to the claims by releasing the following statement:

“The current state of the economy has forced shows to make major budget cuts industry wide. America’s Next Top Model is not immune to these financially challenging times. We’ve had to make significant cuts in every area of the production and, unfortunately, Paulina was a casualty of these cuts.”

America’s Next Top Model recap

By Andrea Thatcher on February 27th, 2008

Paulina.jpg

The decibal level of America’s Next Top Model is enough to make me want to turn off the television the first time anything that could be remotely construed as exciting happens, because all the girls start screaming their heads off.

The girls’ new loft wasn’t as exciting as that reveal usually is in reality shows. I’m wondering if the price of real estate in New York was prohibitive for the show, or if they really wanted to give the girls the feel of a model apartment. How about a bunch of girls having to sleep in the same bed? Is this the ANTM equivelant of the ubiquitous Real World hot tub?

America’s Next Top Model recap

By Andrea Thatcher on February 20th, 2008

Top%20Model.jpg

The first episode of Tyra Banks’ America’s Next Top Model is typically the hardest for me to watch – it’s maximum hype and minimal fashion, you haven’t identified with any of the girls yet, and there’s a lot of crazy antics. Oh, and someone always tries to rap.

Despite the edgy black and white dominatrix-themed advertising for the 10th cycle, this episode started out with a peppy preppy school-girl motif with the girls attending “Top Model Prep” and a faux pep rally with past favorite contestants cheerleading.

The school-girl idea certainly isn’t new, but since they’re on the same network it really smacks of trying to cash in on Gossip Girl’s popularity with the fash pack. But these uniforms were cheap looking, not posh. Instead of stimulating creativity amongst the hopefuls to try and stand out, it just drowned them in sameness.

ANTM: Shanghai Go See

By Andrea Thatcher on November 29th, 2007

antm_dragonshoot.jpg
Wow, I am truly shocked! I really thought the judges were going to vote Jenah off, not Heather. They kept talking about her personality and how she might offend designers and photographers. But it all came down to the fact that Heather couldn’t get the job done. It’s a shame, I’m not sure if her not being able to find the designers’ places was due to her Asperger’s or not, but she does need to be able to do more than take a good picture to be America’s Next Top Model. But hopefully this experience will help build her confidence and I think in time she’ll be a good model. Go to the jump for more on this week’s ANTM.

America’s Next Top Model: model makeover!

By Andrea Thatcher on October 11th, 2007

ANTM_3.JPGSorry this is so late, everyone! But this was a great episode! The girls all received major makeovers–they even shaved all of Bianca’s hair off! Ms. J originally wanted to dye her hair blonde, but Bianca’s hair was too damaged, it would’ve all just fallen off anyway. So they shaved her head, while tears streamed down her face, and then gave her a blonde wig. Tyra and the judges all thought Bianca looked much better without her hair, and I have to agree–she looks so much more elegant and beautiful now. The aspiring models then had a photo shoot where they posed as types of flowers and plants with their new looks. A lot of the girls had trouble with this shoot, especially poor Chantal who was posing as baby’s breath, which should have been easy. But Jay Manuel and the photographer kept saying completely different things as to how they wanted her to pose, and she got so frustrated that she couldn’t produce a good shoot.
