Christina Hendricks relies on structured underwear on the Mad Men set

By Andrea Petrou on November 28th, 2011

Mad Men actresses such as Christina Hendricks and Elizabeth Moss rely on structured underwear for their glamorous look.

The stars of the TV drama, set in the 1950s, are admired for their on screen elegance but costume designer Janie Bryant has revealed the secret to looking good lies with their undergarments.

She explained to vogue.co.uk: “It starts with wearing the right foundations that accentuate your curves. In those days, it was all about longline bras, girdles or garter belts, stockings, and slips. For modern women we do not wear the same foundations, but we can find modern shapewear that defines the body in the same way more comfortably.

“I’ve always had a passion for lingerie and shapewear.

“Whether you call it underpinnings, foundations, intimate apparel or lingerie, undergarments influence so much in fashion. They determine how you walk, stand, and the way your clothing looks.”

Jane has recently been appointed wardrobe advisor at shapewear brand Maidenform and says she was inspired to learn more about the company after they featured on Mad Men.

She said: “During the second season of ‘Mad Men’, there was an episode that included a Maidenform advertising campaign. I was inspired to look at some of Maidenform’s iconic ads for my book, ‘The Fashion File’. Upon our initial meeting, we had shared passions in everything intimate apparel and the rest is history.”

ShinyStyle loves: Triumph Vintage Collection lingerie to mark the brands’ 125th anniversary

By Andrea Petrou on November 16th, 2011

It’s been 125 years since Triumph made its mark in the lingerie sector and what a century it’s been.
We’ve seen underwires, corsets, plunge bras and of course little undies come from this brand.

However, for the next few months Triumph is going back to its roots.

To mark its 125 year anniversary it’s launched its vintage collection, which basically does what it says on the tin. In other words it’s a collection of vintage-inspired corsets, bras and knickers that celebrate the nipped-in waists and high-waisted styling of the past.

We heart the bits available and will most definitely be buying some from this limited edition range.

Geri Halliwell wants to design unisex underwear

By Andrea Petrou on October 31st, 2011

Geri Halliwell wanted to create a range of underwear for women that men would also like.

The former Spice Girls singer has designed a range of undergarments with British retail giants Next – following on from her swimwear and evening dress collections – and she admits she wanted to do a different style to what she usually sees.

Geri said: “Basically, my aim was to make boobs look bigger and bums smaller!

“I feel I understand women’s bodies. This was my chance to do the sort of underwear for girls that the boys would like too, if you know what I mean!”

Among the looks are bras and knickers in pinks and florals as well as negligee and nudes.

Geri previously confessed she was delighted with her evening dress collection, which were stylish yet affordable.

She said: “I’ve been sketching everything myself and I’m thrilled with the results. I’ve had the opportunity to make dresses that are not stupidly expensive but still elegant enough to wear to an upmarket event.”

David Beckham is to turn his hand to underwear design

By emilyborrett on September 22nd, 2011

David Beckham is following the footsteps of his wife Victoria, who’s now pretty much a fully-fledged designer in New York, and turning his hand to design himself – but instead of sportswear, which is what we’d expect the guy to be designing, he’s actually designing underwear after appearing in a campaign for Emporio Armani briefs.

And you thought he’d be designing the same kinds of tighty-whities he’s always seen smouldering in on billboards, you’re wrong – he’s actually designing old fashioned long-johns. Apparently David Beckham looooves a pair of old-school grandpa-style long johns! Who the hell knew!

When explaining his unusual choice of design for the new collection, David said: “I sometimes wear them to go to sleep. They’re very cool.” Bless him.

A source close to David spoke out about the footballer’s new underwear plans: “David is 35 and knows he won’t be playing soccer forever. But he’s an icon for men all over the world and he wears pants like no one can – so it makes sense for him to launch his own.”

Well, we’re glad that Victoria is around to help him out with his designs and try to sex up long-johns a little bit. We don’t want all our boyfriends to follow suit and start going to bed looking like our grandpa.

Josephine De La Baume finds Agent Provocateur undies “empowering”

By emilyborrett on August 15th, 2011

Josephine De La Baume has spoken out about her experience fronting an Agent Provocateur campaign – and the French superbeauty loved it.

Josephine, who is an actress/model and also the gorgeous fiancée of Mark Ronson, found that doing the raunchy AP photoshoot made her feel sexy, powered and confident, as she felt that the lingerie that she modelled showed off the best parts of her figure.

She said: “I worked closely with Johan Renck, the director, so it felt like a collaboration. People say these brands objectify women, but I think Agent Provocateur is empowering. The clothes help you to carry your body with pride.”

I’d like to feel empowered with a little help from Agent Provocateur, but I can’t even afford a G-string from there – lucky old Josephine probably got to keep lots of knickers from the shoot. Looks like it’s empowered in Primark for me then..

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley feels more confident when she has a suntan

By Andrea Petrou on July 6th, 2011

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley feels more confident when she has a suntan.

The model-and-actress likes her skin to be sunkissed but isn’t a fan of sunbathing bathing or sunbeds so uses lots of bronzing powder and fake tan as it’s the safest option.

She said: “I love BeneFit’s Hoola bronzing powder. More women have discovered that they look great with a tan and they also look and feel sexier. It’s also much healthier and safer than going in the sun and using sunbeds. Looking after your skin has become more fashionable.

“I love to be tanned before I go to awards ceremonies and parties. Self-tanning is the way forward – especially for me. As a Victoria’s Secret model, I like to be tanned when I shoot lingerie. It gives me a confidence boost, I feel healthy and of course I look great. The tan makes your skin glow on camera.”

As well as being tanned, Rosie always loves wearing her leather trousers.

The ‘Transformers: Dark of the Moon’ star told Britain’s OK! magazine: “I couldn’t live without my Les Chiffoniers leather trousers, I live in them. I wear them for shopping, dinner and nights out.”

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley is obsessed with junk food despite her Victoria Secrets model figure

By Andrea Petrou on June 16th, 2011

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley is obsessed with junk food.

The Victoria’s Secret model – who is famed for her curvaceous figure – is missing British cuisine since relocating to the US and loves eating things which are “really, really bad” for her.

She told Maxim magazine: “I love eating really, really bad things, like roast dinners and chocolate bread and butter pudding.

“It’s my soul, England. I miss the people, the culture, the food.

“I find it strange that people say English food is bad. To me, it’s delicious. I’ve never really considered it but I was thinking the other day that maybe it’s strange to have beans on toast for breakfast.”

Although the stunning 24-year-old beauty has never worried about her weight she has previously revealed she was advised to work out if she wanted to succeed in her chosen career.

She said: “I can’t remember a time where I really battled with my body, but I can remember being asked to lose weight and battling with the advice.

“It hurt me. Especially as my baby fat naturally melted away as I got older.

“When I started out, I was definitely heavier. I was quite voluptuous in fact. I had a real baby face and baby fat.

“But I was a baby! I was told I had to get into better shape, but I’m quite stubborn so I didn’t.”

Gisele Bundchen has launched her own lingerie range

By Andrea Petrou on May 16th, 2011

Gisele Bundchen has launched her own lingerie range with a stunning show in her native Brazil.

The supermodel paraded down the runway in items from the Hope Lingerie Gisele Bundchen Intimates collection – starting with a blush pink satin and lace set, followed by a skimpy black set with sheer panelling and another black sequinned number – and said it was a dream come true to have her own underwear range.

In a statement before the show, Gisele said: “Life is made of dreams and I’m very happy to announce that now you will know the Brazilian intimate. My dream come true is for Hope. With you, Gisele Bundchen Brazilian Intimate. Enjoy the show.”

Earlier this month, Gisele was named the world’s top earning model for the seventh year.

The Brazilian beauty has topped the list, compiled by Forbes.com, since 2004, but this year saw her income increase by a huge $20 million to earn $45million over the past 12 months.

Proof of Gisele’s star status enhancing brands is easy to find, as after becoming the face of hair care brand Pantene in March 2010, the company’s sales went up by 40 per cent in Latin America.

Lara Stone has been named as the new face and body of Calvin Klein Underwear.

By Andrea Petrou on May 12th, 2011

Lara Stone has been named as the new face and body of Calvin Klein Underwear.

The supermodel – who already fronts campaigns for Calvin Klein Jeans, Calvin Klein Collection and ck Calvin Klein – will star in the Naked Glamour advertising campaign later this year.

Helen McCluskey, chief operating officer of The Warnaco Group Inc. which owns the Calvin Klein Underwear and Jeans businesses, described the ad images as “traditional Calvin Klein, black-and-white, with incredible eye contact.it’s about lifestyle, it’s sexy, and images are up close with cleavage”.

CEO Joe Gromek added to WWD: “It’s a very compelling campaign.”

Although actress Zoe Saldana presently appears in the ads for the Envy campaign for Calvin Klein Underwear, a spokesperson for the company insists Lara is not replacing Zoe as the face of the brand.

Lara joins a host of celebrities – including Pixie Geldof, Ruby Aldridge, Sky Ferreira, Abbey Lee Kershaw, Alice Dellal and Fei Fei Sun – who currently feature in a global advertising campaign shot by Steven Meisel for ck one.

The model – whose US size four figure is deemed ‘curvy’ by catwalk standards – has previously said she thinks her womanly figure has helped her become a success.

She said: “I’m different because I am fat. It would be nice if I wasn’t the only person with t*ts and an a**e.

“If I could have the discipline to be super-skinny I would be. I think of dieting, then I eat pizza. I’m a woman, and every woman wants to be thinner – unfortunately.”

Eva Mendes says posing in her underwear gives her the motivation to stay slim

By Andrea Petrou on May 10th, 2011

Eva Mendes says posing in her underwear gives her the motivation to stay slim.

The stunning actress often has to strip off for sexy photo shoots so knows her body must be in tip-top shape, meaning she does her best to stay away from junk food.

She said: “My job requires me to do a lot of underwear and bikini shoots. That’s what encourages me to put the chocolate-chip cookies down.”

Although she is very conscious of eating healthily and doing lots of exercise now, the 37-year-old beauty says it hasn’t always been that way.

She told Britain’s InStyle magazine: “I never cared about exercise or what I was eating until I got into my 20s and then I started to really get into it. I just wasn’t feeling good, so I started eating well, working out and going from drinking no water – ever – to up to three litres a day. All the stuff that I didn’t do as a kid. Ever since, I’ve really believed in the beauty philosophy of starting from within and it kinda changed my life.”

Dita Von Teese to create her underwear range

By Andrea Petrou on April 14th, 2011

Dita Von Teese is set to release her first lingerie range under her own name.

The burlesque star has signed a global licensing agreement with Australia’s Lime Door Brands for a collection of underwear to appear with her name.

As part of the deal, Dita and the branding firm will also become co-owners of other brands, including a line of dresses.

Dita, 38, told WWD: “I’m delighted to be in the process of creating both a line of retro-glamorous clothing and lingerie.”

The brands will first be introduced to Australia later this year, with plans to expand to the UK, then other markets later.

Michele Hamdorf, CEO of Lime Door, said: “Dita Von Teese is world-renowned as a burlesque performer. She is probably best described as an old-school Hollywood siren.

“Her success has been based on her strong head for business and her distinctiveness. As a brand strategist and developer, I am certain that our collaboration will prove similarly successful.”

The star’s raunchy performances often see her in little more than scant underwear, and she has previously spoken about the importance of wearing fancy smalls.

She said: “Indulging in elegant lingerie isn’t about the seduction of another person, it’s about seducing yourself first and embracing womanhood and femininity.”

Dita also has already proved herself in the underwear market, with a successful line for Wonderbra.

She added: “I did a line with Wonderbra, which was only in Europe – it did really well. I’d like to remind women, especially in America, that lingerie can be beautiful and functional. You don’t have to have your work lingerie and your date lingerie; it can be the same thing. I want to do bigger sizes, because I have a lot of female fans that are curvy girls.”

Dita’s collection will include sizes from extra small to plus sizes, as well as bras that are sized up to E cup.

Act glamorous, live amorous: The sexiest way to blow your paycheck

By Andrea Petrou on September 10th, 2010

By Emily Borrett.

If you haven’t managed to quite retain your bikini-body now that the sun’s gone away, and you’re feeling less than a goddess, don’t worry. As the season shifts from summer into the wintery months a new sexiness begins – party dresses, glamour, and yes, sexy undies.

And if you’re like me and feel endlessly perked up by putting on a pair of beautifully made undies (no Primark here, no sir) then you’ll be pleased to know about the launch of the website GlamorousAmorous.com, which kindly put all of your dream lingerie designers together on one big lovely site. GlamorousAmorous features stock from the very best shops available, which include Mimi Holliday, couture lingerie designers Strumpet & Pink, Maxine’s of London and my personal favourite, Lascivious.

Ideas on beauty and femininity have changed over the last season and designers are no longer creating lingerie with Kate Moss in mind. GlamorousAmorous have catered to this by providing tips for fittings, whether you’re a skinny, straight-up-and-down girl or inundated with curves that Mad Men’s Christina Hendricks would kill for. It’s all about accentuating your most feminine features at the moment, be they your breasts, waists, legs or hips. And GA is here to help.

True, some of the pieces on the site don’t come cheap. But really beautiful, well-made underwear never does. So what I say is, start writing your Christmas list now and hand it over to your boyfriend so that he can start saving up. After all, there’s something in it for him too.

Trend Alert: Top five beautiful bras

By Shiny writer on August 3rd, 2010

Let’s face it. A sexy or cute bra, even if you don’t have a date, makes you feel better about yourself and your outfit.

And with so many on the market there’s really no excuse to still be wearing that discoloured and torn one you’ve had for years. Not only will doing this mean you may experience Bridget Jones style moments but it can also make you uncomfortable. According to specialists you should have your bra size checked every 6 months to a year, or if you have lost or put on weight, sooner.

Not wearing the right bra size or wearing a bra that’s falling apart won’t give you the support you need and could also lead to backaches or sore breasts.

And it doesn’t take long or cost to get measured up either with both Marks and Spencer and La Senza offering free measuring services so you have more money to spend on beautiful new bras.

Here’s our best five for the a/w season.
