By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on November 12th, 2008

It’s always tough out there for emerging designers, and the current retail climate just makes it harder. But that doesn’t have CFDA fashion fund finalists Sophie Buhai and Lisa Mayock down. The Vena Cava designers have actually found reassurance in recession shopping patterns.

“The feedback we’re getting from stores is that the novelty items are continuing to sell really well–our custom prints and the pieces with decorative hardware,” Mayock said. “What I take from that is, let’s keep pushing the signature Vena Cava look, because apparently price is less of an issue when there’s an urgency to the clothes, a specialness.”

Update: More details on CFDA finalists

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on July 16th, 2008

Proenza Schouler hat.jpg

The CFDA is quite proud of the variety in its Fashion Fund finalists this year – with good reason. A green designer (John Patrick of Organic, natch), a milliner (Albertus Quartus – whose design for Proenza Schouler Fall 2007 is shown) and a jewelry designer (Irene Neuwirth) are all included on the short list for the prize.

While the CFDA also touts that two of its finalists are non-New Yorkers, we could only find a few designers who were born or started out in California, none who were based there now.
