Take part in our one minute silence for Alexander McQueen who’s funeral is being held today.

By Andrea Petrou on February 25th, 2010

Thumbnail image for Alex.jpg

Although a few weeks have passed we’re still very much saddened by Alexander McQueen’s death, and we know we’re not alone, with a huge majority of the fashion world still in mourning.

According to WWD, the funeral service for the designer will be taking place today. However it’s “for family only”.

And although a spokesperson said a memorial service for friends and fans will take place later this year, no details have been confirmed.

“We are focusing right now on the Paris show, which takes place on March 9th,” she said.

Until then, we want to make a small tribute to the great designer here at ShinyStyle, so we ask all our readers to join us in a minutes silence at 3pm today.

And of course, our thoughts will be with Mr McQueen’s family.

Is Madonna creating a clothing range for Macy’s?

By Andrea Petrou on February 16th, 2010

madonna.jpg

Hardly a day goes by when we don’t hear about a celebrity and designer collaboration, but this one has really got us interested.

According to WWD Madonna is in talks with a group of licensees, to launch a women’s collection that would be sold exclusively at Macy’s. It is said to include clothing, lingerie, footwear and accessories.

Although names for the range have not yet been finalised, it is rumoured that some considerations flying around include Material Girl for the clothing and Truth or Dare, which was the title of a 1991 film which followed Madonna’s Blonde Ambition world tour, for the lingerie and underwear.

However, we’re not going to begin planning on how to wear those corsets, skirts and rosary necklaces, which we’re sure Madonna will include in her range, as at present no-one on the Madge camp is confirming anything.

We’ll bring you an update when we know a little bit more so watch this space.

New York Fashion Week: Victoria Beckham Fall / Winter 2009

By Kimberley Foster on February 16th, 2009

Last season, Victoria Beckham was suspected of allowing Roland Mouret to lend more than just a helping hand in her collection. But after presenting her fall/winter 2009-10 on Sunday, those suspicions appear to have been erased. Twenty-three dresses were showcased, each offering structure and tailoring but with a little bit more adventure this time. For example, cape-style coats, zipped sleeves, and fish-tail floor-length gowns. There were, of course, short hems in timeless designs, that she says can be worn for more than one season, a nod to the recession no doubt.

“I see these are investment buys. They’re designed to be worn from year to year, not season to season,” she said.

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on April 10th, 2008

Whitney Port eve & A.jpg

Whitney Port is the most fashionable star of “The Hills” in our opinion, even if she did mispronounce Givenchy. Now she’s set to launch her own contemporary clothing line called Eve & A this fall.

What should Jenna Bush wear down the aisle? Designers weigh in

By Andrea Thatcher on January 30th, 2008

Jenna%20Bush.jpg

While twin sister Barbara is considered the more fashionable Presidential daughter, all eyes will be on Jenna Bush when she weds Henry Hager this spring. We’re still hoping for a white house wedding, but since that seems unlikely we’ll settle for a chic designer gown.

Barbara has connections to Proenza Schouler and Lela Rose, while First Lady Laura Bush can call in heavy hitters like Oscar de la Renta and Carolina Herrera.

What do the experts suggest for Jenna? “I would want Jenna to make the statement, and not just be about the gown itself,” Lela Rose told WWD. Rose suggested strapless sheath with a little volume on the bottom.

Arnold Scaasi thought what would best complement Jenna would be a simple and classic silk satin organza dress. If she plans to wear a train, he told WWD it should be a detachable one that “could be taken off after the ceremony and she could dance the night away. They’re young and peppy. Why shouldn’t they be able to dance around?”

Designer Pick of the Week: Lorick

By Andrea Thatcher on December 4th, 2007

Lorick%20dress.jpg

Today WWD highlighted a few emerging designers and included Abigail Lorick in their list, so we thought it would be a perfect time to showcase the former T.S. Dixon designer’s first collection. We first wrote about Lorick in October when her fashions were used on Gossip Girl during a fashion-centric episode. We loved the ladylike dresses Blair wore for her mother’s ad campaign and had to share this fun designer with you. You can expect to see many of those designs and the ones on the Lorick Web site this spring at Steven Alan, Caravan and Darling in New York, at Eskell in Chicago and online at Activeendeavors.com, Gargyle.com and revolveclothing.com.

Soho store is just the beginning for Topshop in the US

By Andrea Thatcher on November 28th, 2007

It looks like the rest of the U.S. won’t have to wait too long for Topshop to expand once the planned Soho store is up and running! While two more Manhattan stores will probably be the first to roll out, there are also plans for a West Coast flagship as well as stores in cities like Las Vegas, Miami and Boston – and sooner rather than later according to Topshop owner Sir Philip Green. Green also told WWD that he’s looking for young U.S. design talent to add to their design pool which most famously includes Kate Moss, left.

David Beckham to be new face of Emporio Armani underwear

By Andrea Thatcher on November 12th, 2007

d%20beckham.jpg
David Beckham’s incredibly hot with his clothes on or off, (Ok, maybe a little hotter without!) so I can’t wait to see pictures posted everywhere of him in his underwear! The world’s hottest soccer player is giving his fashionista wife a run for her money–he’s now signed with Armani to be the new global face of Emporio Armani underwear. And we’ll actually be seeing the ads in person, as the line will finally be launching in the U.S. in February, exclusively at Bloomingdale’s and Macy’s department stores. Beckham began shooting the ad campaign last week in Los Angeles, which will premiere in fashion magazines around the world in January.

WWD luxury report – bag popularity contest offers some surprises

By Andrea Thatcher on November 8th, 2007

luxury%20list%20bags.jpg

The annual ranking of handbag brands has been released by WWD today with some surprises. First off, Coach nabs the top spot as the brand luxury consumers are most familiar with, above Louis Vuitton by no small margin. 76% of consumers recognize a Coach bag as compared to 63% who recognize the venerable LV. But just as surprising are the vast differences among the “it” bags which are driving other competitors in the sector. Gucci came in number three and credits the Indy Bag, left, for sales growth. This bag is very traditional and less high-fashion with its logo print, despite a high price tag of $2,350. On the other hand, eighth-ranked Fendi is relying on its rather out-there To You bag, $1,300, which is very interesting but may not appeal to mass consumers.

Tommy loves Macys (so do we)

By Andrea Thatcher on October 26th, 2007

Tommy%20macys.jpg

Of course you can already find styles like this “Tommy Hilfiger tartan empire waist dress, $159, at Macy’s stores. But soon your selection of Tommy sportswear will increase when you walk into a Macy’s and decrease everywhere else as the two firms have inked an exclusive deal. WWD calls this a “bold move” on the part of Hilfiger and are hopeful that this will mean Americans see more of the upscale products that have fueled the brand’s European popularity. We also hope it will help Macy’s tepid sales, as we’re big fans of the department store. But don’t worry, Tommy will still operate their own stand-alone stores and sell on their Web site.

Fashion blogging gets a dose of high art, and vice versa, with The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute

By Andrea Thatcher on September 26th, 2007

costume%20institute%20collage.jpg

Apparently The Metroplitan Museum of Art has caught on to the fact that we all love to blog about it’s Costume Institute and decided to get in on the action. With “blog.mode: addressing fashion”, WWD reports, the museum hopes to create an instant discourse about the clothes, with computer terminals at a “blog bar” right there in the musuem. About 40 costumes will be on display from the museum’s permanent collection, some of which have never been on show.

Marc Jacobs considers leaving New York Fashion Week

By Andrea Thatcher on September 13th, 2007

76670537_edited.jpg
According to WWD Marc Jacobs is pretty perturbed about the rumors going around about him having drinks at the Mercer hotel Monday night while everyone was waiting for two hours for his show to start. “Marc and I were up from Friday until Monday,” said Robert Duffy, Marc Jacobs’ business partner. “Marc wasn’t drinking, he wasn’t doing drugs, he wasn’t at the Mercer Hotel having a cocktail while everybody was at the show waiting. He was with me backstage.” After all the upset, Jacobs is seriously considering taking his show to London or Paris, instead. “I don’t really feel a part of the American fashion community,” he said. “I really feel like an outsider, I think we all do, and we feel unloved here, so we want to go somewhere else.” All I have to say is: please don’t leave us, Marc–we love you!

Get ready for a revamped Lord & Taylor

By Andrea Thatcher on July 23rd, 2007

Lord%20and%20Taylor%20ad.jpg

If you’re anything like me, you mostly venture into Lord & Taylor for a bonus gift event at your favorite makeup counter, an end-of-season sale on Ralph Lauren sweaters or a Christmas gift for your grandmother. But the mid-range retailer is looking to get you in stores and on their Web site more often with a $10 million image campaign. The overhaul is more about branding the store as a more modern destination for classic fashions than getting you to buy one specific item, according to WWD, and they swear they’re not trying to go too young and hip.
