Top five red lipstick shades as seen on the SS 2012 catwalks

By Andrea Petrou on January 4th, 2012

It’s time to sort out that make-up bag and make way for the next must-have makeup trends.  With SS 2012 nearly upon us those winter beauty hues are being placed in the bargain bins to make room for the latest colours.
One trend that made a huge impact on the catwalks for the next season was red lips. Vixen reds, dark berries and orange tints are pushing out those gothic red lips of AW 2011 with Anna Sui, YSL and Erdem all leading the way.

Go for the classic Hollywood red lips as seen at Jason WU or go for a dark shade as shown off at Donna Karan. Pale skinned beauties will look great wearing a red lippy with an orange tint, while the matt look shown off at Erdem is great for darker skin types.

See the gallery below for all the designer hues hot next season.

Trend Alert: Tartan

Black Check Tweed Mini Circle Skirt

It’s time to get on board with one of this season’s snuggliest and most wearable trends: tartan. No, you don’t have to start dressing like Princess Anne, don’t worry..

Tartan and check fabrics were all over the catwalks for the Autumn/Winter shows, from tough and masculine grey check twin-sets at Yves Saint Laurent to sixties-style checked military coats at Burberry Prorsum and blanket skirts at Rag & Bone.

We’re desperately keeping our eye out for a plaid maxi-skirt that we can wear with tough boots and a simple white T-shirt for for a laid-back 90s grunge look, but no joy yet. However, the high street is already working with this trend well. We love Topshop’s leather and check bomber jacket, which would look so so good with a pair of cigarette pants. Meanwhile at Asos they’re already selling bold tartan capes in eye-catching colours – the chicest way to wrap up warm this winter.

The best variety of tartan fashion, however, is at River Island. Their high-waisted 1940s style trousers worn with a silk blouse would be European perfection. Our top buy though is the checked pair of navy blue lace-up shoes with bow detailing – just put those bad boys on with a tea dress and you’re good to go with a quirky, British look.

Check out the gallery above for our favourite tartan pieces on the high street.

Paris Fashion Week: Yves Saint Laurent

Yves Saint Laurent A/W 2011

It’s been a flurry of big names scheduled to show their collections over the past few days, and as Paris Fashion Week nonchalantly draws to a close we have to say that Yves Saint Laurent have been one of our favourites. With a front row collection of stars such as Ronnie Wood, Jane Birkin and Lou Doillon, the atmosphere was already so cool that it didn’t matter if the clothes were any good or not – but any road, they were better than good. They were brilliant.

Much like Galliano’s show earlier this week, Miss Marple-esque tweed skirt suits and fur muffs were present again in the YSL show, nipping in waists and demurely falling above the knee for an outcome that managed to be both vampish and demure. If you’re looking for a good indication of what sort of outerwear to be looking out for once summer has been and gone, look no further than this collection for a strokeable assortment of sharp double-breasted paddington-style coats, which, if you can afford it, will look incredible dressed down with skinny jeans come winter.

Though on first appearances the whole collection may have seemed rather prim, take a second look and check out the PVC and studded detailing around coat collars and necklines, and gold chains used as adornments for dresses and shoes. We absolutely fell in love with the fashion house’s sharp, boxy PVC sleeveless jacket, which managed to give a nod to both the golden age of punk and the possible future of fashion. We love.

Check out the gallery above to see the rest of the photos from the YSL show.

YSL follows Prada’s lead and opts for a model rather than celeb to front its 2010 campaign

By Andrea Petrou on November 24th, 2009

natalia_vodianova.jpgYesterday we told you about Prada’s way of standing out from the designer crowd by using a model instead of a celebrity and it seems other fashion houses have the same idea.

Paris designer YSL has today officially announced that Russian model Natalia Vodianova will be replacing (older) supermodel Christy Turlinton for its 2010 Spring range.

And that’s not all. It seems Natalie is also destined to deal with Stella McCartney and could front the stylish British brand after she made her only catwalk appearance in September for the label.

With so many high profile jobs under her tiny belt this is one model to keep an eye on.

YSL launches a perfume claimed to have an edgier, younger scent than the brand’s iconic Paris fragrance.

By Andrea Petrou on October 6th, 2009

ysl-parisienne-1254770971.jpgIf you like to smell like a designer dolly then you’ll be thrilled to hear Yves Saint Laurent Beauté has launched a new feminine fragrance.

Parisienne has been inspired by the glamour and seductive allure of a Parisian woman and is described as an edgier, younger scent than the brand’s iconic Paris fragrance.

The floral woody scent opens with a vinyl accord, said to add a modern twist to the fragrance and evokes the gloss, varnish (we really hope it doesn’t smell like this) or metal of a spike heel.

It is balanced with cranberry and blackberry. There is also hints of damask rose, violet and peony, while patchouli, musk, sandalwood, which the company claims adds “depth at the base”.

We haven’t yet smelt the fragrance, which is also available in a body lotion, deodorant and shower gel but if supermodel Kate Moss is the face of the fragrance, we’re sure it won’t be too bad.

By Andrea Thatcher on June 2nd, 2008

Paris Fashion Week: Yves Saint Laurent

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on February 29th, 2008

ysl08-1.jpg

More play with silhouette and proportion in Paris.

Catwalk Queen reviewier Pui-Tien Man says there’s a reason for Yves Saint Laurent’s reputation as one of the most prestigious and luxurious fashion houses: producing one of the sharpest collections to hit the Paris runway, YSL mixed constrasting luxe fabrics with strong angular lines to present an engaging show.

The futuristic met age-old tradition in a YSL-induced collision. Models in identical black bowl-cuts and gothic dark lips set the tone for a modernist look. Accessories were kept to an absolute minimum to allow the cuts to take centre-stage…

Lucy Liu keeps busy in Paris

By Andrea Thatcher on February 26th, 2008

Lucy%20Liu.jpg

Lucy Liu arrives at the Christian Dior show in Paris today, where she sat front row with Monica.

She also attended the new YSL store opening.

Unfortunately, one reason Liu may have all the time for the Parisian hobnobbing is because her new show, Cashmere Mafia“, has already been cancelled.

It’s a shame because we liked “Mafia” better than the other “Sex and the City“-for-network-TV project, “Lipstick Jungle.” We also found the clothes more interesting.

Who knew stars like Michelle Trachtenberg, Demi Moore and Rumer Willis, Kate Beckinsale and Kate Hudson were so into Dominos?

By Andrea Thatcher on February 22nd, 2008

Dominos.jpgClick image to enlarge.

To be fair, they’re probably more into charity than they are Dominos, and that’s probably why they flocked to De Grisogono’s Hollywood Dominos tournament benefiting The Art Of Elysium. And we’re really, really hoping this red carpet serves as some sort of glamour barometer for the Oscars on Sunday as almost everyone looked stunning. YSL introduce the Belle du Jour wristlet

By Andrea Thatcher on January 15th, 2008

YSLwristclutch.jpg
As many begin to herald the end of the overpriced it-bag, YSL are jumping ahead of the game by downsizing their bags and starting a new trend all together. On the Chanel catwalk Lagerfeld presented ankle purses which so far have failed to catch on. YSL have jumped ahead of the game by creating this bag that would literally only hold the essentials. The Belle du Jour wristlet is $355.00 from YSL online. Hurry up, Lindsay Lohan already has hers
