SS2010 trends: Summer Sunglasses

Comments (0)

The sun's been shining all week, and after the dismal few months many of us are embracing it by dusting out those spring tops, and re-stocking our wardrobes with the latest spring trends (sorry credit card).

One essential item for this season is of course sunglasses. And although we know many of you are thinking it's a tad early, we've seen a good few ladies already sporting these to shield their eyes from the rays.

This season's sunnies are all about aviator styles, pinks and of course florals. Go with one of these styles to fit in with the trends, or opt for a classic designer pair, think Chanel, Vivienne Westwood or Madonna's latest range for D&G, that will keep you going throughout the next few years.

We've put together a gallery of sunnies to help you out, but remember, it's not cool to wear these when you're on the tube, in a club or anywhere else there's no sun. Unless of course you're a hip-hop star or rapper in training.

Gallery: Retro summer dresses

Hurrah, the snow has melted and the sun is shining, meaning that we're finally at the beginning of spring. It may still be slightly too cold to think about bearing your legs, and arms at that, but we have a feeling the summer is going to be a hot one.

We've therefore decided to celebrate by putting together a gallery of retro summer dresses, for when that temperature hits the late double figures.

Retro prints are going to be huge this year, and were displayed by a number of designers at their SS2010 catwalk shows back in September.

They've also made a huge comeback in the past few years thanks to vintage styles and thrift shopping becoming a popular past time for fashionistas. So if you don't see anything you like in our gallery (of course we're sure you will) then head to your nearest charity shop or vintage store for the real retro thing.

Spring Trend: Beautiful bags

Comments (0)

Just when we thought the expensive "IT" bag had taken the hint and disappeared (well for a good few years anyway) it's decided to return once again to the shelves.

According to Selfridges its sales of designer bags have increased by a massive 60% over the past year with many handbags queens making a beeline for the Mulberry Alexa Chung inspired satchel bag. There's also been a huge increase in the much coveted Marc by Marc Jacobs 'Hillier' bag in bright purple and red City bag by Balenciaga.

However, we know, like us, many of you may not be able to fork out those thousands, or at least high hundreds you need to buy one of these bags so we've decided to have a little rebellion against the IT bag, giving you alternative spring 2010 trends instead with a much fairer price tag.

Spring trend: Fantastic florals

Comments (0)

The days are getting longer and brighter with many of us seeing a few days of sunshine. And of course, that can only mean one thing. Spring is on it's way.

We can't wait for the warmer days and brighter nights but most importantly the opportunity to wear the latest spring trends.

One trend that's going to be huge this season is florals, which were shown off by designers such as Christian Dior and Chanel at their SS2010 catwalk shows way back in September last year.

These prints have also been spotted on the likes of boho babe Sienna Miller as well as Chanel fanatic Alexa Chung and Sarah Jessica Parker.

So how do you wear, what could be busy, items of clothing? Well the trick here is not too go too overboard. Unlike the double denim trend that's hitting our wardrobes at the moment, florals should be teamed up with something plain. If you decide on a flowery top, then opt for jeans or a pastel skirt underneath.

And if you go for a skirt or on-trend culottes then pick a plain white or pastel coloured tee.

View our gallery below for our favourite floral picks.

Lauren Bravo writes: Spring is here! For once in our worryingly incongruous meteorological climate, the weather has got it right. March started and BAM, the sun is out, chill has gone and we can all venture out in our second-warmest jackets with all-over thermal insulation, just as fashion intended.

But despite all the gaiety and the promise of daffodils, baby chicks, crème-egg-and-hot-cross-bun sandwiches etc, there's also that nagging feeling at the back of my mind. Because spring means, inevitably, summer. And summer means, inevitably, shoe dilemmas. Or sweaty tube rides, blisters, and shoe dilemmas.

As a lifelong adversary of the flipflop, warm weather footwear has always caused me issues. Instead of the beautiful colours and pleasing, clunky form of proper shoes, in summer we're suddenly expected to do little more than strap a sole to our feet with a bit of flimsy metallic lacing and try to keep them on as we negotiate miniature golf courses. Summer footwear doesn't contribute to an outfit; it is demanding, with its rubbing and its chafing and its necessitating a pedicure. Gone is the powerful stomp of the Alpha female, and in comes the pathetic flap-flap of the summer trudger.

Thankfully, this time round it looks like we'll have other opinions. Spring/summer 2010 is presenting us with two intriguing shoe options: the Midi Heel Mum Shoe and the Clog. Both offer more substance and coverage than the average summer shoe trend, thus should be greeted with happy gratitude by shopper bored with sloppy Havaianas, and, even better, we don't have to wait till the temperature hikes to start wearing them. But which will you be sporting?

First up is the midi heel, which one suspects will be the more enduring trend, a) because they are less ridiculous and b) because you can wear them, and, like, still walk and everything. They are a gift to women with feet everywhere. After years of heels growing more and more vertiginous, until our current point where shops seem to have lost sight of what shoes were originally intended for and lapsed into some form of masochistic battle weaponry, fashion folk are finally lowering the stakes again.

I have had a midi heel fixation for a little while now, hunting out those elusive 2-3 inch styles in a sea of six inch beasts. Midi heels confirm the theory that women really can have it all - we can have feeling in our toes AND a sexy clip-clop when we walk, AND look presentable all at the same time. Life really is better in the middle, it's just like that Clover ad says.

As a wider trend, midi heels will be around for a good few seasons, but this summer they'll be used more specifically as support for the 1970s-style Mum shoe; a beachy, sturdy, hippieish affair normally spotted on middle-aged eco campaigners and librarians. With espadrille soles, ankle ties, low wedges and wide, comfortable straps all key features, it's a daunting trend for those of us who've spent winter glued into our biker boots. But you can always toughen up the look with a leather jacket and a slash of vibrant lipstick. Hemp kaftan optional.

Then there's the other contender, a far less user-friendly prospect. As far as street-worthy trends go it's in its infancy, but best make your peace with them now because it won't be long before they're 'it shoe' du jour. So far, this is what we know about clogs: Dutch people are supposed to wear them; Dutch people don't really wear them, but they do sell them in souvenir shops; Alexa Chung wore them on the cover of March Vogue; actually, Alexa Chung's been wearing them everywhere; Alexa Chung looks good in them; we may, or may not, also look good in them (sources are yet to confirm whether this is in direct proportion to one's resemblance to Alexa Chung).

But before we dismiss them as crazy shoes for crazy women, we should consider the advantages of clogs. They are chunky, thus far easier to wear than spring's other heel trend, 'the spindle'. They are wooden, thus far less likely to come apart in the middle of Oxford Street and require you to hop home. They are actually pretty flattering, if worn with a teeny skirt and black opaques or, when it gets warmer, bare legs with some sort of sundress and denim jacket. They are a subtle nod to the prairie trend that's set to hit, far preferable to a broderie anglaise smock and a stetson. And if anyone mocks you, you can kick them where it hurts and do some serious damage.

So there we have it, forget the summer trudgers and embrace the new spring stompers. And by the time you've mastered your clog dance, it'll be winter again without anybody noticing.

Return of the mac: The best macs for spring 2010

Comments (0)

Spring is only a month away and SS2010 trends have already been hitting highstreet and online shelves with a vengence.

There's a few essentials you'll be needing this season to update your wardrobe, but one must have is a mac.

The mac is perfect for those inbetween Winter-Summer days, where rain will be at a premium but the warmer weather means we need something a little bit lighter. These macs were also a big hit on SS2010 catwalks last year.

They've also made an appearance in a range of brand's SS2010 campaigns, including Burberry (who can forget that gorgeous mac Emma Watson modelled for the brand).

We've therefore put together a gallery of the hottest macs this spring to ensure you brave the wet spring in style.

Grammy Awards trend: Nude dresses

Comments (0)

Nude shades are going to be a big hit next season and it seems celebrities have already started wearing this trend.

Model and yummy mummy Heidi Klum showed off her pins in a nude short tunic style frock at this years Grammys.

Katy Perry also went for the same shade, but unlike Heidi opted for a long backless floor-length frock by Zac Posen.

And it was a nude mermaid look for Keri Hilson who arrived at the event in a stunning Dolce and Gabanna frock.

Who do you think wore this trend best? Let us know by leaving your comments below.

Grammy Awards trend: Gold

Comments (0)

There was a colourful array of frocks at this year's Grammy Awards but one shade that made a huge appearance was gold.

Colbie Caillat donned a dark shade of this colour appearing in a long beaded and organza gown complete with a Jennifer Aniston style split, for her red carpet look, while Kathy Griffin sported a not so different style in a lighter shade.

However others, including Keri Hilson took the trend to a completely different level opting for metallic hues over the traditional red carpet sparkles. This was the same in Country Collaboration With Vocals winner Carrie Underwood's case, who showed off her award wearing a dark gold metallic frock.

Irish rocker Imelda May also showed she'd been struck by the midas touch opting for a gold mid length frock for her performance at the event as did R&B singer Ke$ha.
Although we're sure you'll agree some pulled off this look far better than others.

Awards evenings always bring out trends we hadn't really thought about, and this year's Grammys have been no exception.

Although feathers have been lingering in the style aisle for a while, we haven't seen many hit the catwalk or highstreet (unless of course you count the few which made an appearance over the Strictly Come Dancing phase.)

However, we have a feeling there will be a few more feathery styles lingering around following Rihanna's decision to wear these at the Grammys, where she pulled off a white high-collared (and almost bridal) Elie Saab A/W 2009 dress, with a feathered neckline, perfectly.

And feathers were also the style order of the day for Lea Michele. The American actress and singer went for a short one shouldered navy cocktail dress, with a skirt covered in feathers, by Romona Keveza.

The two starlets may have picked completely opposite styles but we think the feather trend they both chose works really well.

Trend alert: The Trench Coat

Comments (0)

Trench C.jpgEmma Watson's modelled it and now Victoria Beckham has shown how we should be wearing Burberry's SS2010 trench coat.

The ex Spice Girl, turned designer was spotted wearing the classic beige coat on two separate occasions over the weekend.

Once whilst shopping with her gorgeous other half and secondly as she was leaving the D&G headquarters.

We think a trench coat is perfect for those transitional spring evenings, providing a fashionable warmth without being too bulky, and it was one of the key items on the runways at last year's fashion week.

However, we think sticking to leggings and boots may be more of an option than Victoria's bare legs and skyscraper heels.

With the news that 2010 will see a smaller handbag trend, we've emptied our huge bags of all the old clothes, perfumes and note books and begun looking for smaller pastures new.

There is a huge range of smaller bags on the market today and if you can't quite get over having to carry around the bare minimum you will still be able to get away with a medium sized tote.

We've put together a range of smaller daytime bags to help you get this season's style with ease.

Ladies who got that extra large tote bag they'd been banging on about this Christmas, may want to look away now because this year it's all about the smaller the better.

According to the Daily Mail, we women have woken up to the fact that carrying around a big bag complete with perfume, a change of shoes and clothes (or is that just us?), is not doing our backs or postures any good at all. It claims that our handbags are now 57% lighter than last year meaning we don't need that huge bag anymore.

And it's not just the paper that's pushing to banish the trend. Celebrities have also been spotted downsizing their bags. One example is big bag offender Katie Holmes who was spotted this month with a much smaller satchel alternative to her previous red Birkin Hermes suitcase oversized bag.

Kelly B.jpg

Kelly Brook shows us how to stay warm in style during this snowy weather.

The presenter and actress was seen leaving the theatre, where she is currently starring in Calender Girl's, in a knee length black woven coat, Ugg style wedge ankle boots with cute pom poms and of course her Chanel bag.

She also showed Winter hair doesn't have to be drab with a cute blue headpiece, which we think is a perfect way to keep your hair in place throughout the windy days.

Gossip Girl star Taylor Momsen is known for her trendy punky style, so it hardly came as a surprise when she was spotted wearing a range of statement tights.

The actress was snapped shooting scenes for the popular drama in a grey coat, thigh-high frock and navy ankle boots complete with a pair of patterned fishnets. She's also been spotted out and about wearing, what we think is clearly her trademark tights trend.

We know many of you will be thinking about warmth rather than fashion on days like today, but we've put together a gallery of similar statement tights for those of you feeling a little bit braver. Double up the look with a pair of plain coloured tights underneath for a quirkier warmer look.

It seems school uniform styles are making a come back.

The trend was sported by Alexa Chung as she entered the MTV studios this week, who teamed up slouchy socks with ballet flats, a checked dress, navy blazer and retro satchel.

But keep those old school uniforms locked away as this years trend is more about girly than the full on Britney Spears style.

To help you get the look just right we've put together a gallery of hot school uniform styles.
